Have passed by this museum many times but didn’t know it is so amazing and spacious!! The design of this museum and the items shown are fascinating. We felt like sailing on the ocean. What a pity that the ship bridge simulator was out of service that day. Will definitely come back for it!
Once upon a time this museum was located at Stanley but nowadays it has moved to the piers in Central. The museum makes the most of the new space that it has. The many galleries in the museum are either chronological or thematic. Walking down from reception takes you into the early maritime history of China and there are some nice early ceramic models of boats and reconstructions of early types of Chinese ships. There is also a very nice display on early trade routes. As you move through the gallery you enter the section on trade with the West. There are some lovely canton wares on display. There is also a canon from the opium war once displayed outside the tower of London. As you move through the gallery and go upstairs the focus is more on WW2, trade and trading. There are models and paintings of Georgian and Victorian trade ships and a gallery of modern model ships. Also as you go up the stairs you see modern ship equipment and learn about modern trade in the city as well as the infilling of the harbour. The highlight probably is a simulator of a ship deck you can use with an appointment.
Spent the 2.5 hours in this beautiful museum. Situated right by the waterfront between Star Ferry and Public Piers. Collections of nautical artifacts, paintings, porcelains, models, and instruments are vast and reflecting the importance of Hong Kong being a world trade harbour. Stayed longer as they offered guided tour when I was about to leave and turned out it was the best guided tour with information otherwise I would miss.

Located at ferry harbour, it feel so maritime and near ocean. You can see hong kong maritime history here and ship miniature. The building is modern with air conditioning, perfect place for rest from hot weather
Lovely setting with diligently arranged presentation . I have learnt many historical facts about the modern China. Well worth a visit.
If you want to know more about HK maritime history, this place is better than a library complete with visual and information from the old days to the latest.
Nicely done. Good overview of history, not too much not too little. And contemporary information on ships, technology and the port. Worth a visit, just next to the star ferry pier.
