A beautiful space to pay homage to the gods. The craftsmanship that created the temple is a lost art. Shoes are left outside the temple and feet washed before you enter. No entrance fee is charged. It’s dark and cool inside with no photography allowed. Your eye quickly adjust to the dark interior. We spent around 20 minutes wondering round. Outside is a magnificent Bodhi tree that is worth a look.
Would recommend a visit.
Visited right on time for the mangaLarathi, just before closing. Had a wonderful darshan and I spontaneously shed tears of joy! Felt His grace and presence there.

For architecture enthusiasts, the temple is really old with fine granite structure and intricate carvings. Overall, a blessed experience.

30.5 to 36.5 km area along the Galle Road, 4.5 km to the land side and 1 km to the seaside. It is also famous for its rich cultivation of coconut palms and as a major producer of toddy and vinegar. There are few historical places in the area such as ancient Catholic church and Dhaaldawatta Purana Maha Viharaya. Wadduwa is popular for the products made from coconut fibre such as brooms, carpets etc.

It's a good destination to take your bike there and cycle back to Colombo.
9:40 train out of Colombo
12:30 another train back to Colombo
Kalutara Bodhiya stands as a remarkable religious destination deserving of your visit. Situated along the Colombo-Galle road, this Buddhist temple is impeccably maintained and offers a serene peaceful environment, ideal for deep reflection and spiritual introspection. I wholeheartedly suggest exploring this site if you wish to delve into Sri Lankan culture and history or simply seek a tranquil and meditative experience.

Important place for the person who likes to discover historical facts of Sri Lanka.
The castle is a huge one and those days ,the owner used imported quality materials to build it and decorate it.
But no renovations have been done recently and it is going to be damaged.
Staff is available for describing the history of the castle. Actually they did an excellent job.
Here a few pictures were taken with the approval of the guiding lady regarding inner wall design and the owner of the castle who donated an ambulance to the UK in history.
Currently they maintain a children's home for little boys as per the wish of the owner of the castle.
The garden is comparatively maintained nicely and you can take pictures.
It is prohibited to take pictures inside without an approval.
A small car park is available and limited vehicles can be parked. I think ground clearance low vehicles (like aqua) are attentive while entering the park.
The road is narrow close to the castle car park and be careful while giving space for the opposite direction vehicle.
You can take tickets while you enter the location at the main gate.( not expensive)
Famous religious place
Kindly remind to wear suitable clothes
You can arrange "Bodhipuja" here
Do not put garbage everywhere.
I had a wonderful experience visiting the Buddhist temple in Kaluthara. The separate car park made it convenient to access, and even though there was ongoing maintenance on the chaithya, it didn’t hinder the peaceful atmosphere for pilgrims like me. The availability of flowers and other items from roadside shops added to the experience, and I found it to be a truly calm and serene place.
A buddhist temple located in Kaluthara. There is a separate car park. There is a ongoing maintenance on chaithya, but that is not a problem for pilgrims. You can buy flowers and other things from roadside shops. A calm and peaceful place.

A very nice church to visit. The gentleman was kind enough to explain the value of the church and how old it is. The Queen visited it twice.

We signed in the guest book, which is preserved.

Superior place to visit
I wanted to write an article about this Pipe Organ as this is the Asia's oldest pipe organ and it is still working properly. We had this journey in 2013 and got to know many details from the parish.

Kalutara Beach is simply enchanting, especially during sunset.

The sky comes alive with a breathtaking display of colors as the sun dips below the horizon. The vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple create a captivating scene that leaves you in awe.

Don't miss the chance to witness these mesmerizing sunsets at Kalutara Beach. They are truly unforgettable.

A beautiful British church built in the colonial era still standing in its original glory. All the antiques are preserved and is still in the colonial state. Only a small walk from the Victoria Garden and thus it's recommended to visit the place when nearby. Make sure to visit in the evening as the attendant is available at that time who will explain the history of the place and its significance. Take time to walk around the cemetery and to embrace the calm and quiet environment of the church.
Felt blessed to be here !!

There are rumours spreading around the town that bungalow is haunted in nighttime. Avoid visiting late night 👻

The entire building is characterised by intricate carvings. A dancing hall with a stage is another of its features. The architecture shows greater similarity to an English mansion than to an ancient walauwwa.

Richmond Castle is a two-storeyed building with 99 doors and 34 windows. The whole mansion needs to be renovated. Many rooms and walls are broken or damaged.

You need to buy a ticket at the entrance which is 100rs person. There will be guides inside to let you know the history. It is okay to visit if you are passing by kalutara.

This Castle has an incredible story to it and one can hear the story in its entirety from the official guide.

Entry to the Castle is Free of Charge, there is a small fee for vehicle parking.

I would have awarded this 5 🌟 if the castle was better maintained.
Rude impolite security insisted that we remove our footwear and walk on the heated cement brick at 4pm . Even when explaining to him that the group had old ladies with sensitive feet he refused to change his primitive thinking. Worce was his comment to visit another temple if we did not agree with his rules.

Kalutara Bodhiya is an excellent religious site that is well worth a visit. Its immaculate condition and peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect place for reflection and spiritual contemplation. I highly recommend this destination to anyone seeking a glimpse into Sri Lankan culture and history, as well as those looking for a serene and contemplative experience.
This is a very famous temple in Colombo . It is a Shivan kovil . It is built by a wealthy ponnmpalam and his sons . This temple made by the grande . Temple is very strong and beautiful . There is a wedding hall also there . Temple festival days and other festival days special worship there. Most of the Colombo Hindu people and other religious people also go there.
Looking forward to visit soon. Our last visit was not during public viewing times i.e. after 3pm.
A peaceful and well-maintained Buddhist temple located in Kalutara near the Colombo-Galle road. Beautiful environment with a view of the Kalu River and sea. Washrooms were in good condition and this place usually busy in the mornings. but a great place to relax and experience Buddhist culture. A must-visit place.

Last visit Jan 2023. It's about 1hr from Colombo. Much cleaner beach compared to Panadura beach. Lease crowded and good for a family with kids , but not recommend to have a swim since the sea is rough at times. Entrance is from two by roads from the Galle road and need to cross the train tracks to enter the beach. Parking is limited.

Great beach. It is very clean but very dangerous to swim in it.
Its over 170 year old church build by England architecture, most of the structure in this church made by wood even the flooring, and only the pipe Organ still uses in sri lanka known to my knowledge. Wonderful church to visit but not much information giving out about this church.
Best peaceful beach to visit in Kalutara district. Very unpopular with crowds but have the most beautiful beach for miles and not many around to disturb you is a big plus. Doesn't have many shops and vendors around here but have many big hotels facing it. Best place to experience a peace and quiet sunset.

Kalutara Bodhiya Review:

Visiting Kalutara Bodhiya was a serene and spiritually enriching experience. This sacred site, located in the coastal town of Kalutara in Sri Lanka, holds deep cultural and religious significance. Here are some highlights of my visit:

1. **Historical Significance**: Kalutara Bodhiya is believed to have been planted in 1042 AD by King Vijayabahu I. Its historical importance adds a layer of reverence to the site.

2. **Scenic Location**: The Bodhiya is situated in a picturesque setting, surrounded by lush greenery and offering breathtaking views of the Kalu Ganga (Black River). It's a tranquil oasis in the midst of a bustling town.

3. **Sacred Bodhi Tree**: The heart of Kalutara Bodhiya is undoubtedly the sacred Bo tree (Ficus religiosa), under which Lord Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment. The tree's sprawling branches and vibrant leaves create a soothing atmosphere, perfect for meditation and reflection.

4. **Religious Devotion**: The site is a hub of religious activity, with devotees frequently visiting to make offerings, light oil lamps, and offer prayers. The atmosphere is filled with the scent of incense and the sound of chants, making it a spiritual haven.

5. **Architecture and Statues**: The temple complex surrounding the Bodhi tree boasts impressive architecture and numerous Buddha statues. The intricate details and serene expressions of these statues are a testament to the craftsmanship and dedication of the people who built them.

6. **Peaceful Atmosphere**: Kalutara Bodhiya offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It's a place where you can sit in quiet contemplation, recharge your spiritual energy, and find inner peace.

7. **Cultural Insight**: Visiting this sacred site provides a valuable insight into Sri Lanka's rich Buddhist heritage and the role Buddhism plays in the lives of its people.

Overall, Kalutara Bodhiya is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a blend of spirituality, history, and natural beauty. Whether you're a devout Buddhist or simply someone looking for a peaceful and culturally enriching experience, this sacred site in Kalutara will leave a lasting impression.

This is one of the most beautiful & peaceful place in Nuwara Eliya. You'll bever regret spending time here especially in the evening (after 4pm). The atmosphere is something cannot be described in words. Go inside & inquire about the pipe organ out there, you'll get amazed for sure!

PS: Photography is prohibited & taken with permission.
The church of the Holy Trinity was thus built in 1845 atop a hillock a little away from the flurry of Nuwara Eliya town. The oldest pipe organ of Asia available in here. They are playing it every Sunday for the church mass I'm not uploading the photos of inside church bcz u must go there and see

❤️❤️❤️
We have seen people who worship from car itself while passing the kovil. Most of them do it because of a car parking problem. This is one of the kovil which has a massive car park
