Delicious food on Sundays

Great host, beautiful facilities. Very family oriented

Wonderful music, dynamic preaching, excellent staff, many opportunities to get involved in serving the Lord in a Christ-centered church!

This church gives people freedom to explore their spiritual lives by offering a wide range of connections and ministry opportunities.
At first I was intimidated by the size of the church, but as soon as I arrived, people welcomed me and helped me get connected with others. There are great men's programs, which offer an array of ways to fellowship and grow in the Lord.
And if people want to just sit in the pews and hear the sermon, they are free to do that too!

I was looking for a new church, but I was determined that I was NOT going to go to Lake Avenue Church. But my husband really wanted to try it, so I gave in. I am so glad I did! The moment I stepped on the campus I knew that this was a place where God comes first. Four years later, I have never regretted that decision. This church has been here for me throughout good times and bad, pandemic and health. It offers ministry opportunities in so many aspects of life for all ages.
What an amazing place!

In the early 90's a Dr. Clifford Penner came via a recommendation from Lake Avenue Congregational Church (Pasadena). This 'Doctor' & horrible recommendation ruined my marriage! - My wife & I were in the Bereans Sunday school group of Lake Avenue Church.
Many Phycologist's including Dr. Laura Schlessinger, have claimed these type of therapist's are in fact "implanting memories" & causing false memories in vulnerable patients by suggesting that they are victims of abuse when NO abuse actually occurred. These therapists have persuaded patients that their problematic mental symptoms were due to abuse when they did not know this to be true.
IMHO Penner's non-Biblical guidance created a foothold for satan (I will never Uppercase the devil). This is EXACTLY what I experienced with my dear wife (Now believed to have been going through Postpartum depression exacerbated by youth & the busy lifestyle of a young married).
Well, this began a horrific chain of events which scarred my three beautiful children for life ! - I have NO DOUBT that Clifford Penner broke-up my little Christian family. If one looks up the Bible's mention of "Why do the wicked prosper?" (Jeremiah 12:1), a picture of Dr. Clifford Penner should be referenced as the example of one of these individuals.
Now, after all these years, I do pray that he has REPENTED of his destructive ways and departed from this horrible practice/teaching. With the Lord's help, I trust I'll eventually find a way to forgive the Bereans brethren (they all turned their backs on me) & Dr. Penner for what they put all of us through. Amen & Amen...

We were invited to their Annual Christmas Concert by a member that's on the choir, and it was beautiful! The choir and orchestra were amazing! This was the first time we visited.

Incredible Christmas Eve sing a long. Excellent orchestra, choir, and the pipe organ was so powerful. I loved the Christmas sermon from the lead pastor. His preaching was relevant, thought provoking, and honest.

Amazing people run this church. Nice church and great atmosphere.

The nun and monks are very kindly. I recommend to go there.

Very friendly atmosphere. Have been looking for a church with something different than what I have experienced for over 70 years.
Minister has great presentation and ability to keep your attention.

My now wife and I had our wedding their last year and while the sanctuary is beautiful the people running it need to do better. Between locking our guest out, chaining the front door, having no security, an unprofessional sound technician and an unfinished interior it was not worth the money we paid. Underground railroad there might be nice, but I would not recommend this place for a wedding.

We have been here multiple times for LCA events. It's a lovely building and the people are all friendly.

Loved the energy the congregation has. 1st time here. You felt the joy and unity with everyone.

Take the living history Underground Railroad tour!!! Cannot recommend this highly enough. I called to reserve a tour and spoke to Janet. She was so nice and even let the tour happen even though we didn't have the full 10 participants needed. The actors are all volunteers and they do an amazing job. You become a slave and its completely set up with scenery and houses that are your "stops" along your journey to freedom. You have a guide that stays in character to take you to each stop and teaches you about what really happened while on the journey. Seriously, this is absolutely worth the ticket!! It takes about 45 minutes from the beginning to end. You'll show up 30 minutes before to handle paying for it, etc. Great place to take kids as well!

Went to an AA convention there and the ladies that cooked our meal were really nice and just a joy to be around makes me want to go to church

An outstanding church with a warm and friendly congregation. The pastor and staff truly care about the community. If you're in Southern Ocean County, even for just a weekend, you won't find a better place to worship.

Michelle falina was my wedding planner and all my goodness she is amazing definitely go with her she became a great friend of mine. This church is absolutely breathtaking I will never forget it. Even though that marriage ended in divorce lol

Anyone can come and worship here....And they do not care if you eat something like a cookie sitting down 😁 or tell you keep their Church clean by not spilling anything. Really a relaxed place where whosoever will may come to worship as seen through the years. They serve the community around them as well. Always a place for great worship and plus among ALL the many churches visited or been to, I can truly say, "The Lord is in this Place!" May His Spirit have His way here even more in these challenging Times!
Also, you must be proactive to connect with others but really not any different from smaller churches too if you are not proactive. Sadly many have cliques small or large a church may be, but then we go for the Lord and just honor Him. He knows all things!
Need preach Gospel very, very, clearly. Jesus saves us from sins by the Blood He shed & His finished work at the cross 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙌🙏🏻🙏🏻💕🎉🥳!
Many servants here and they send forth missionaries around the world! That says a lot too of them. God bless and bless Lake Avenue Church!

Great place

I picked up scrap metal from parking lot, They did some remodeling and they always call me for construction clean up. I will have more pics of the beautiful Congregation Church very soon. thank you.

We visited back in 2008 and found it to be a wonderful congregation!

If you can handle judgmental faces if you have the glare you’ll fit right in

I love the building I was one of the Architects but the congregation in the community are great

My favorite

Great Community oriented nondenominational church

Welcoming congregation. Egalitarian.

We visited this beautiful, historic church in Detroit for the Underground Railroad tour that they give. They do a great job
of presenting this part of our American history in a way that leaves a lasting impression. I recommend this tour for everyone.

The people at this church are among the most welcoming I've ever met!

Amazing community! We love it here.

Awsome

Glorious. A beautiful and historic church in Midtown Detroit. It's historic for its age, over 120 years old, and for its role in the Underground Railroad. In fact there they host the Underground Railroad Living Museum. I was there during the annual Noel Night listening to a concert of madrigal singers perform.

I loved this church. So comfy and personable. I will go here again.

Wonderful pastor, loving church family, truly a heart warming place to worship!!

This nondenominational Church is absolutely wonderful. We have been going here for about 6 months now (started around April 18’). The congregation welcomed us, as most churches do, but also gave us room to breath and test the waters for ourselves. After a few visits we decided that this is the place we want to be and quickly we became involved in the church family. It has been so easy to make new friends and enjoy praising Jesus Christ with everyone.
In addition to the great services and congregation, our children have absolutely been enjoying the children’s church. They have so much to offer for every age of childhood while still ensuring each child is thoughtfully taught according to their learning needs. This part of the church has been such a blessing that we personally have been volunteers for these programs...
Regardless of who you are, what your background is, and whatever stage of life you are in, this country church has something to offer while always putting God first!

The First Congregational Church sanctuary is one of the most beautiful spaces in Detroit. I held my wedding ceremony here on April, 14th and I couldn’t have chosen a better place, space or team! The events coordinator, Chelsee and her crew, ensured my special day ran smoothly from start to finish. Chelsee was very understanding, patient and sensitive to all of my wedding needs. The venue offers packages to fit most budgets and they rarely said “no” to any of my add-on requests. My guests were stunned by how beautiful and elegant the venue was. In short, this church surpassed all of my expectations.

Special place

Its an amazing church, i recommend you come here if you wanna feel like your in a family and if you wanna grow in your faith. Great people here.

Incredible service to the community. So kind and

Mark 6:3 Then they scoffed, "He's just a carpenter.....and they took offense." John 14:12 (Jesus said)" Believeth on me, the works that I do you shall do also; and greater" This gives me courage and strength that the Holy Spirit lives in true Christ followers. I am grateful for MBC, the church that loves God and people. In Gods economy less is more. You don't have to be perfect to be loved and used by our Heavenly Father, you just have to believe in Christ.

I think the relationship you have with God is reflected in people's day to day attitude. I have learned from the Pastor that your relationship is between you and God. Jesus loves me and together we must "wash each others feet".
The MBC family welcomed me with open arms the first time I attended. There warm and non judgemental attitude was truly reflective of their faith.
Their children's ministry and youth group was also something that impressed me years ago when I first started to attend. The kids are excited to be involved. The teens were obviously involved as they welcomed me.
I have since been involved in their many bible studies, Men's group and social events.
The church was able to allow me to get married and utilize there 120 person capacity Fellowship Hall for my reception.
I can't say enough nice things about MBC.
The Pastor, the previous Pastor, the Elders, Deacons are all so involved that you're sure to be satisfied with the availability of teachers.

We had our wedding at First Congregational Church of Detroit in July 2016. Mainly we worked with Pastor Cindy and two staff members to plan the wedding and the weeks and months before it happened.
Bottom line, we recommend against First Congregational Church of Detroit as a wedding venue.
Please note: this is NOT a review of the church itself. The Underground Railroad Tour is awesome! And the church community was always welcoming and kind to us. This is just a review of the church as a venue/caterer for weddings.
Pros: The building is beautiful, both the sanctuary itself as well as the rooms used for the bridal party and reception. The dining area looked great with napkins decorated in our wedding colors. And, for what the church promises, it’s a good bargain in terms of price.
Unfortunately, the church did not deliver on their promises.
1. We had the misfortune of having our wedding on one of the hottest days of the year. The reception hall itself has air conditioning units, and the church staff assured us that our reception would be safe from the heat. Not so. We had an afternoon reception, and it was a sweltering 85 to 90 degrees. The air conditioning was on, but it was apparently not at all up to the task of cooling a room with 140 people. Our guests were quite uncomfortable with the heat.
2. This created a significant problem when the church caterer did not have any water available for guests at the start of our reception. Our guests graciously listened to our speeches, and even dry toasts by our parents, without any water or wine on our tables. Members of our bridal party specifically asked that pitchers of water be brought out for our guests as the reception got started around 1pm. But the church was slow to address this issue, and it was over an hour into the reception before all our sweltering guests had water to drink at their tables. This happened despite the fact that we discussed ahead of time with the church that drinks be at the tables when our guests arrived in the reception hall. Many of our guests left earlier than they would have due to the heat and lack of water.
3. We paid for appetizers as part of the church catering. We discussed ahead of time with our church contacts that the appetizers be available at noon (around when the ceremony ended). At the end of the ceremony (~noon), we told our guests they could file into the reception hall for some snacks, but there were none when they arrived, creating some confusion. The catering staff put out the appetizers around 12:45pm, only a few minutes before we asked everyone to take their seats to start the reception. The church catering staff even covered up the appetizers with plastic wrap and took it out of the reception early, with most of it left uneaten.
These were our biggest concerns, but there were quite of few other problems.
Throughout the wedding planning process, Pastor Cindy and the staff all assured us that they have extensive experience with weddings, and that they were prepared to pull it off.
We want to emphasize that the community at First Congregational Church of Detroit was kind and welcoming to us, but we are not able to recommend them for weddings.

Great place to take the kids, i was inspired to bring my own 4 children after going myself on a field trip via Blackwell elementary school (my youngest daugther's school 5). This is a Live simulation of slavery and its escape- just a good experience overall, U Should definitely Visit.
