The hours posted on the sign indicated it should have been open, but after a long walk to get there, we were disappointed with a closed sign.

To think that Captain Absalom Boston prepared the New Guinea African Meeting House on Nantucket Island historically that would be the place where Frederick Douglass a newly freed slave, living in New New Bedford MA would begin his stellar and international career as a public speaker is testimony to this sacred and all-purpose church, school, and what I call #American Democracys Meeting House.

Their website says that they are open for tours with reservations and they had a page to reserve one, so we did so one day before. I am now holding the email confirmation in my hand in front of the museum that’s completely empty and their phone number doesn’t go through. We planned our day around this. Don’t waste your time!

The African Meetinghouse on Nantucket, is a sacred space. As a Congregational Minister with a home on Nantucket, I have been privileged to be given permission to have weddings, Christmas Eve services, and baptisms at the Meetinghouse. I always mention to groups some of the important history of the African American community which used the Meetinghouse for lectures on its history, education, worship, meetings, and concerts. It is a very special place!

Excellent historical source of African-American folk who did monetarily well and contributed to the wealth of Nantucket.
