I used Thunder Swamp Trail off of Snow Hill Road, which is the “main trail.” The forest in this part isn’t too impressive, the trail isn’t well taken care of (had to turn around before Bushkill Creek because it was washed out), and because of the plants taking over the trail, the ticks are horrible here.

I camped out at site O-23 "Bushkill" in the Owego camping area of the forest. It was really peaceful and pleasant! And free! Making reservations and getting a permit was simple. Highly recommend if you want to get away and don't require running water or a toilet.

We stayed in a group site on snowhill. It was well taken care of, and far from other sites. It was super quiet and some interesting trails around to hike. No cell reception, truely off the grid which is super nice when looking for some peace and quiet. My husband came across a black bear who seemed pretty uninterested and ran off thank goodness. We enjoyed visiting the Garlic Festival at Shawnee Ski Mountain and exploring the very large forest area. Ran into the ranger when taking our picture at the sign, but other than that didn't see anyone else. A few cars pass once in a blue moon. We were impressed by how well the sites and the park down the road were all kept up and clean.

Prepare yourself for "amazing". If you are looking for an all day adventure, you've found it. Some of the most beautiful nature you will ever immerse yourself into. Grab your hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and pack some snacks, because this is an adventure you won't soon forget. Absolutely breathtaking views that will leave you wondering why you haven't been here before.
