The most incredible space, the central yard with the white floor is so beautiful. The students and faithful, men and women, were either studying or peacefuĺly resting in the shade. A truly magical cultural and religious experience.

Al-Azhar is the most important mosque in Egypt at all, and one of the historical strongholds for spreading and teaching Islam as well. It is also one of the most famous ancient mosques in Egypt and the Islamic world, and part of the Al-Azhar Al-Sharif Foundation. Its construction dates back to the beginning of the Fatimid state in Egypt, after Jawhar al-Siqali completed the conquest of Egypt in the year 969 AD. And he proceeded to found Cairo. He established the Grand Palace ...

Such a spiritual place that gives you goosebumps. As soon enter the Mosque from the southern gate, the old majestic high walls great you with the memories of thousands of Islamic Scholars and Sheikhs who passed these exact paths and learned in these spaces all over around you now.
The whole experience was wonderful.

Al Azhar Mosque very old mosque dated more than 1000 years old. Still in very pristine condition. There are Islamic lessons taken after every prayer for the common people to attend. Feeling inner calmness when entering this premises

The Al-Azhar Mosque, built between 359 and 361 AH (970 and 972 CE), is Egypt's most important and well-known mosque. For over a thousand years, it has served as both a mosque and a university. When Egypt was taken by Jawhar A-iqilli, the army chief of Al-Muizzulidn Allah, the first Fatimid Caliph in Egypt, it was founded with the goal of promoting the Shiite Doctrine. Al-Azhar currently teaches Islam according to Sunni doctrine. After the city of Cairo was founded, A-iqilli began construction on the Al-Azhar Mosque, which he finished. On the 7th Ramadan 361 AH /972 CE, it hosted the first Friday Prayer. As a result, it is the earliest mosque built in Cairo and the oldest Fatimid monument still standing.

Very beautiful mosque, with stunning architecture. Definitely worth visiting if you are already in Islamic Cairo.

Our brief visit coincided with prayer time, so we didn't have to pay an entrance fee.

Absolutely stunning old architecture... I saw it only on the outside on a stroll in Khan Al Khalili and it is very well lit externally and looks majestic. It will warrant a special visit during the day some other time.
