As we walked through the ruins of the Citadel, we discovered a massive palace complex that had a beautiful dome and massive doors! The doors were so heavy that we could only open them together. We reached the reception hall of the Umayyad Palace. It was built in 720 AD, but did not last long. It was destroyed by an earthquake 30 years later, and just a year later, the Umayyad dynasty was destroyed.

The Umayyad dynasty ruled a great Arab empire in the 8th century. This palace was one of the centers of their reign.
Byzantine, Roman, and Arabic styles are combined in the architectural features of the palace, reflecting a mix of cultures and influences from that era.

Dana Reserve provides a habitat for many important organisms, including endemic trees and diverse desert flora. The reserve is also an important passage for migratory birds during the spring and autumn, as it receives waterfowl and migratory birds along the eastern African route.

Dana Reserve offers wonderful opportunities for visitors to enjoy nature and watch wildlife. Visitors can take scenic walks and explore oases and mountainous areas. Mountain trekking, camel riding and camping trips can also be practiced

The Umayyad Palace is a fascinating site to explore, boasting a rich history and intriguing architecture. We found it convenient to use Uber to reach the palace, and then enjoy a leisurely walk down to the Old Town. This allowed us to take in the local sights and sounds while moving from the palace to the bustling heart of the city. Overall, a visit to the Umayyad Palace offers an insightful glimpse into the past and makes for an enjoyable start to exploring the Old Town area.

Included in the Jordan Pass - also part of the citadel enclosure.

I loved this palace. It has a real sense of history about it and is in incredibly good condition.
