A Peaceful Getaway; Home Away from Home
We are the very first guests of the new owners Frederic and Fiona! The four of us (myself, hubby and a couple friends) stayed for three nights at the gites. Hubby and I had the Wine Store and it was perfect! It was more beautiful in real life than in the pictures online. Modern on-suite toilet for the bedroom, comfortable bedding, charming exposed roof structures on the upper level. Everything was clean, well-maintained and in great condition, always a pleasure to see.
We were pleasantly surprised to find the kitchen very well-equipped, so much so that we could whipped up two delicious dinners of French roasted chicken and rabbit in red wine stew for the four of us. The farmers market in Saumur was just a 20min drive away and it supplied all that we needed for our feasts. Hubby and I celebrated our 5th year wedding anniversary on the third night here and we appreciated the warm hospitality of the owners for allowing us to use the big dining room in their main house for it.
Although it was a short three days, we managed to do quite a bit of sight-seeing. Visited the famous Chateau de Chambord, Chateau de Villandry and Chateau de Chenonceau, and a less famous one Chateau de Breze near Saumur, which was unique as it had a large underground castle portion where the people lived and worked in. You could spend hours exploring the space underground. It was not as crowded as its famous counterparts, which I found pleasant. We also visited the mushroom growers and a wine-maker in the cliffs off Saumur.
Autumn had arrived and the leaves on the exterior walls of the Wine Store were turning a lovely orange-red colour, a treat for us from tropical Singapore where everything is green all year round. We regretted that we didn't have more time to go on little hikes around the gites. Even on our morning walks, we were greeted by friendly neighbours who tried to make conversation with us, but was a pity that we couldn't understand the language well enough to converse back.
La Coyere Gites is definitely one of the best accommodations we had on all our France trips. We will be back!
