Cute place, poverty is ever present but really not dangerous. I.suggest you walk up to the cross (the Tercer millennia ) on your own or with friends through that rough looking neighbourhood. It is really friendly, people greet you all the time. The staircases are supercool... all of them worth a visit.
Really nice place to have an icecream and a conversation.
