Nestled within a quiet neighbourhood in Halasuru is the ancient temple of Sri Someshwara. It's a 5-mins walk from the Halasuru metro station. Even though I visited on a Saturday around 9 AM, there was hardly any crowd.
Currently there seems to be some restoration work going on at the temple entrance, but the scaffolding won't stop you from seeing the actual carvings from the Chola period from up close. Inside the complex, apart from the main temple you'll find shrines dedicated to Ganesha, Subramaniyan, Shiva, Anjaneya, Naga Devata, and my favourite the Kamakshi Amma temple adjoining the Shiva temple.
Photography is prohibited only inside the main chamber where devotees stand in line. You are permitted to take pictures of the architectural wonders outside the main chamber (pillars and wall carvings). I would recommend spending some time to observe the intricate wall carvings all over the temple, that have stood the test of time and have been so well preserved by the management. They depict fascinating scenes from Hindu mythology and represent an architectural style that is no longer seen in modern temples.

A beautiful temple in the middle of the city. Very calm in the morning. There is no much crowd in the morning and it's so divine feeling one gets here.

A Spiritual Oasis in the Heart of Bangalore
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Sri Someshwara Swami Temple in Halasuru, Bangalore, and it was truly a divine experience. This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Someshwara, is a hidden gem that beautifully blends tradition and spirituality right in the heart of the bustling city of Bangalore.
It's hardly 5-7mins walk from the Halasuru metro station. Gopuram works are going on. There are lots of murthis (idols) inside the temple. Shiva linga, Ganesha, Anjaneya, etc. I haven't seen till now that huge NavaGrahalu, there is a separate space for it. Chanting of "Om Namah Shivaya" and pleasant environment made me to stay for more time.
The architecture of the Sri Someshwara Swami Temple is awe-inspiring. The intricate carvings, majestic towers, and the overall design transport you to a different era. It's a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Karnataka. The serene atmosphere within the temple premises provides a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The temple is well-maintained, and the surroundings are peaceful, creating an ideal environment for prayer and meditation. The priests are knowledgeable and approachable, offering insights into the history and significance of the temple. Their devotion and commitment add to the spiritual ambiance, making the visit a truly enriching experience.
Whether you are a devout worshiper or someone seeking a moment of tranquility, this temple has something to offer for everyone. The well-maintained premises, friendly staff, and the spiritual energy make it a must-visit destination in Bangalore.
I'm blessed and happy to see that kind of temple.
I highly recommend a visit to the Sri Someshwara Swami Temple to anyone looking for a spiritual retreat within the city. It's not just a place of worship; it's a cultural and historical marvel that leaves a lasting impression on all who have the privilege of visiting.

A very beautiful ancient Shiva temple dated back to 10th century. The temple ambience instantly made me very calm and I felt very strong vibes of devotion . The main lord Shiva idol is in the inner sanctum and one can then walk around the corridor built surrounding the inner sanctum. The temple has a large area surrounding to sit down and meditate or just listen to the hymns . There’s not enough parking near the temple so please be prepared to park at a distance and walk into the temple

Good temple situated near Halsuru Metro Station. Must visit. However, often devotees of the temple are disturbed because of loudspeaker prayers of other religious place nearby.

Sri Someswara Swamy Temple is one of the old temples located in Bangalore. Lord Shiva lingam mandiram. The Temple is moderately large and peaceful with a lot of sub temples. Various murthy's of ganesh are present here. The chola kings have built this temple and we should take care of this.

The Someshwara Swamy Temple in Halasuru stands as a remarkable testament to the rich heritage of South Indian architecture and religious history. This sacred site is believed to have been initially built by the Hoysalas or Cholas, showcasing the intricacies of Dravidian architecture. However, in 1570 AD, it underwent a significant renovation under the patronage of Kempe Gowda, the founder of modern Bangalore. The temple's uniqueness is immediately evident in its sculptural marvel, with each pillar and wall adorned with distinct reliefs and intricate carvings. What sets it apart is the diversity of its pillars – no two are alike, some even feature high-reliefs resembling free-standing sculptures. The walls narrate stories through a series of reliefs, scene by scene, which is a rare and captivating feature. The legend associated with this temple claims that Kempe Gowda was inspired to build it when Lord Shiva, in the form of Someshwara, appeared to him in a dream after a hunting expedition. While this temple dates back to the 16th century, it may not be considered very old in a country like India with ancient treasures like the Ajanta Caves dating from the 2nd century BC.
