The boat ride system is well established. It may look bit chaotic but it's a good transport medium for Elephanta. Continuous boats move to-n-fro from Gateway of India to Elephanta.

Absolute chaos. They ask you to show your ticket for the return journey. They don't count or collect it, so its not for keeping track of how many people are still on the island. I would assume most people would want to return to the mainland. Another money grab scheme for people who lose their tickets.

The ride operators stuff as many people onto the ferries as possible and take them back in no particular order. We were the first or our group to board but saw two other ferries leave before us.

They also charge rs10 to go to the upper deck and don't give you a receipt for it.

You can see the mangrove forests near the island from here which is cool.

A ten km ferry ride from the Gateway of India gate will end at the Elephanta ferry station. Elephanta Hill is very nice to see from here. There are arrangements to get off the ferry and take the troy train to the foothills of Elephanta Hill.

Elephanta caves are well maintained historical place of Mumbai, 3 - 4 hours required to visit it fully, nice place for photo lovers, beware of monkeys over there, lots of restaurants are available in the island, the best thing of the place is ferry to the caves from gate way of india, it took approximately I hour to reach there and that's the best experience of ferry, choose the ferry which had top seats for passengers, there were a toy train too in the island. Overall 1 day picnic if you have one day to spend in mumbai...
