Best bookshop in Paris if you're looking for specific book in paperback format or for worldwide authors literature in French language. The philosophy and history section is astonishing and also other subjects are plenty of updated books and monography.

Gorgeous bookshop. HOWEVER....couple of years ago i was job searching and decided to leave a printed copy of my cv to this bookshop. Note I was a regular customer. When I asked if I could drop my cv the person at the till refused and said they werent looking for anyone. I asked if I could leave a copy in case they have a future vacancy. He insisted no and treated me disrespectfully and a oh-so-upper-class arrogance. The ethics of a bookshop is a big factor for me and treating arrogantly, poor students down and out in Paris is a big no no in my book. Lovely to look at. There are more ethical bookshops to shop from though.

Around the Sorbonne and the Odeon, Paris has the highest density of bookstores in the world. And they are all different. Unlike bookstores in the major chains, each of these Paris bookstores has its own personality. And Compagnie is my preferred one. I always visit it when I come to Paris! They have a very eclectic selection of (French and translated) novels, and political, and history books. The books are well displayed. The only problem is that it is hard to resist and buy a lot more than what you are looking for. If you want to buy books in French, Compagnie is the bookstore to go.
