A quiet place in the centre of Manchester, less than 5 minutes walk along the road from the Art Gallery. The door is at the side of the building (next to a restaurant) and admission is via an intercom and up a flight of stairs.

The volunteers at the desk are welcoming and accommodating, and will give a short introduction to the Library if it's your first time.

I came to see an exhibition, and was surprised by the small space: the library is one room lined with shelves of books (and various small displays), with an open sitting area in the middle.

I would recommend dropping in if you have up to an hour free, to wander amongst books and enjoy the peace.

Great hidden gem in central Manchester - enjoy a coffee or lunch in inspiring surroundings with an interesting history exhibition too. Although the library's books are for members only to handle there is a small selection of related reproduction hardbacks (e.g. Folio series versions of Thackeray) you can read in a comfy chair while imagining you are there at its height of influence. And all this is free (but donations appreciated). Recommended as a must see for any bibliophile - just ring the buzzer and ascend the stairs...

A bit of a hidden gem here - a large, single room library dating from the late 1800s. Friendly and welcoming staff greet you as you walk in to a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by wonderful books. You have to ring the door bell to gain access, and the library itself is at the top of a few flights of stairs.

Delightfully, quaint, old school library bang in the centre of Manchester city. Hidden behind an intercom door and up a spiral staircase into a glorious room filled floor to ceiling with books!

Beautiful building, tucked away, and a real tranquil haven. I loved the highlighted displays of books in the collection. Poor Shirley, in such a state of disrepair, but it's wonderful that the library are raising funds for a full restoration. The little shop area, with prints, postcards and books was too tempting. I loved my visit.

Wow, this is such a hidden gem in the city. I was waiting for the bus across the street and found the little door. After a few rounds of stairs, behind a door there is an amazing historic library. The front desk is super friendly and informative. High recommend you stop by.

A hidden gem in the centre of Manchester. A beautiful listed building accessed by stairs. Wow factor on entering. Warm, friendly, informative greeting. so beautiful inside! Historic books, exhibitions, so interesting. Amazing glass ceiling and dark wood interior. Children welcome. Lovely menu and food and drink available actually in the Library. We had brunch and it was perfect, good prices and served with a smile. Gift shop too. We'll worth a visit folks and as it's a charity, worth supporting. ❤️
