This statue stands in tribute to William Henry Playfair, a 19th century Scottish architects, who designed the eastern part of the New Town and many of Edinburgh's neoclassical landmarks such as City Observatory on Calton Hill, the Royal Scottish Academy Building and the National Monument etc.
The statue depicts William Henry Playfair dressed as a gentleman of the 19th century. The statue has William Henry Playfair standing in portrait pose, his left hand resting on a table and in his right, he holds a stack of papers, perhaps his next architectural masterplan.
