Had dinner at Aksorn in Bangkok, and it's safe to say it lives up to its Michelin star. The place runs on a fixed menu for about $150, which might sound steep, but it's worth every penny. What's really interesting is the Australian chef behind the traditional Thai menu, bringing a fresh take on classics. From starters right through to desserts, everything was spot on. The highlight for me was the steamed rice in the main course – the aroma alone was enough to make me overindulge. Ended up with a bit of a food coma and needed a coffee break to recover!
The curry deserves a mention too; it was fantastic without being too spicy. They tailor the spiciness to each diner, so you get to enjoy the flavors and a slight kick. I'm already planning to come back here whenever I want to introduce friends to authentic Thai cuisine.
As for the atmosphere, it's exactly what you'd expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant – impeccable service. Opting for the terrace seating was a great choice, with the cooler evening air and a bit of a breeze making for a perfect setting. Overall, it's a solid 5-star experience.

I loved this restaurant. I could leave it at that but I won’t. Let me explain.
I have eaten in 3 Michelin Starred Thai restaurants in Bangkok now. First one was a 1-Star in January 2023 and it was genuinely delicious and amazing and left me with great memories.
I then ate at a 2-Star Michelin restaurant in Bangkok in December 2023. Aksorn served better food than that restaurant at much cheaper price. Sure, the 2-star deployed lots of theatre (making the Tom Yum soup at the table for example, was still Tom Yum) whereas Aksorn has none of that. In fact, neither did the restaurant in January 2023.
It’s a nice restaurant. Sitting on the terrace was really nice and pleasant and quiet. All the staff are super nice and friendly and just make the evening so relaxed.
But the food is the star. I have added my own photos (mainly to authenticate I did visit) and they replicate other posts. But I will say best dish for me was the green chicken curry, 2nd was the mussel salad and 3rd place goes to the deep-fried pork and betel leaves. But honestly, everything was amazing.
I love the way they keep it traditional, no theatre.Just excellent food which is placed in the centre of the table to share. Such an Asian way to serve food and I absolutely love that. Western people (farangs) should take heed.
I have seen reviews saying this is messy and not what you expect in a 1-star Michelin restaurant. Well, this is traditional and that is what this restaurant experience is about - old fashioned traditions. Love it. Also, I read one saying the portions weren’t big enough. I ate TEN dishes from appetisers to mains to desserts, mains accompanied by steamed rice (my favourite). I have a big appetite and I practically rolled out the place. There is plenty of food served.
I also noted someone said too salty. I am salt intolerant (I genuinely get sick from too much salt) and this food was seasoned to perfection. Every dish, not one was too salty. So I disagree with any review that says too informal, too salty, insufficient helpings etc. That was not my experience.
I am fortunate and have eaten at several Michelin starred restaurants in multiple countries. Aksorn has smoothly moved into 2nd place on my all time list, beaten only by an amazing 2-Star 15-course tasting extravaganza in Berlin in 2018 that still gives me goosebumps when I think about it. But that was a different experience to Aksorn.
So, my conclusion. This restaurant has been my best Michelin Starred meal in Bangkok, followed very closely by the other 1-Star from January 2023. 3rd place goes to a 2-Star that spent far too much energy on theatrics to the detriment of the food. And cost me nearly double the price. You are there to eat the food, not watch a show. Just my humble opinion.
Before I forget, cocktails are also really good, and strong so watch you don’t become Mao Maak.
At 5,000THB for a person (£112 or US$142 for that standard of food, 2 cocktails and a couple of bottles of sparkling water, that’s a bargain to me.

It wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be.
The food were locally sourced but the dining experience was too casual in a way that there was no more space to eat and the dishes were prepared like I could just buy them off the street and everything was just dumped into the table altogether.
For a table for 4, I could not really fully say that the serving size was substantial, though the flavours were nourishing, they were just not gourmet material. There was no attention to detail. The cutlery were just haphazardly chosen. The ceramics did not even deliver poise. The atmosphere wasnt relaxing and the restaurant was just quite small and cramped. I couldn't even find any charm or at least soul in their terrace dining space. I thought maybe I would be wowed by some breath-taking view.
They have an open kitchen which obviously boasts transparency of their skill in cooking and gives us a sense of security with the food that we eat and how they are handled. But the restaurant lacks finesse. Perhaps, yes, they have mentioned it's "just like having a casual family dinner" but I was expecting some Michelin-quality element which earned them a recognition.

Aksorn is a beautiful restaurant with great atmosphere. I would definitely recommend booking the outside terrace for some lovely views. The food was sensational. Beautifully presented and each of the 13 dishes brought something different. Everything we tasted was delicious. Don't miss out on the cocktails, they were also a huge highlight. Some reviews said the portions were too small and they left hungry but we were so full and barely managed to finish the mountain of food. Perhaps previous feedback was taken onboard. Fantastic service as well!

Think you know Thai cuisine? Think again - chef will take you on a culinary journey, going through classic Thai cook books going back up to 100 years ago, bring back flavours that have almost been lost. It’s a great journey indeed, and an experience that any lover of Thai flavours would enjoy. Couldn’t fault any of the dishes, and serving sizes are substantial for a fine dining tasting menu. Definitely worth the money!

Our dinner gathering with friends at this charming restaurant was a mix of unexpected surprises and delightful moments. While our reservation for a group of 6 initially encountered a hiccup as our reserved seats were taken, the restaurant's quick response in accommodating us on the patio turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The patio, in my opinion, offered a more pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, allowing us to enjoy the evening even more.

However, the one downside was quite significant: the excessive saltiness of the dishes. My least favorite dish was the deep-fried fish, pretty sure the overly salty fried skin made some irreversible damage to my taste buds. Additionally, the absence of a substantial main meat component in the main dishes left the overall dining experience somewhat unsatisfying, especially when considering the relatively ordinary and affordable nature of the ingredients.
