A really good museum to visit but needs at least 4 hours to a full day to really see most of it. Lots of interesting artifacts and exhibits that help visitors understand the history of the country. There are also very-welcome spots to sit and rest your legs!

We added this to our trip at the last minute and we were so glad we did! It's a beautiful museum and all three generations enjoyed it. We went in July and it was a respite from the heat, but we learned about Japanese history and different Buddhist sects. Beautiful kimonos, screens, samurai armor and weapons. There is also a "hands on" section and we made our own postcards! I cannot recommend this enough. Take a few hours, it's worth it!

The Tokyo National Museum provides an abundance of work illustrating Japan's rich cultural heritage, offering an interesting journey through its extensive collection of art and artifacts. The comprehensive displays are accompanied by informative descriptions in English and Japanese.
The Tokyo National Museum is not merely a collection of objects but a gateway to understanding Japan's soul. It's a must-visit for anyone intrigued by Japanese culture, art enthusiasts seeking inspiration, or travelers keen on exploring Japan’s unique past. Highly recommended!

You can easily spend multiple hours in each building of the Tokyo National Museum. I could be wrong, but I feel like the main focus is on art and antiquities, while I was hoping to get some more knowledge about the history of Japan as well (ancient Japan and the different periods, how people lived back then, wars and conflicts etc.). Nevertheless, it's still totally worth it, especially on a rainy day.

This place is huge! I only had time to go through the Japanese Gallery but spent over 1.5hrs in this building alone. I liked the interactive displays that allowed you to do your own iterative block printing artwork on a postcard. The tea garden is also beautiful. You could spend a whole day doing just the Tokyo National Museum. Ueno Park is a huge complex which is easy to underestimate the size and scale of. If you are interested in Japanese and Asian cultural arts, make sure you budget time for this museum in its entirety.

Very interesting exhibits, you can easily spend over an hour in each building.
Don't need to wait, just get a ticket at the booth. It's free if you're over 70, just show a passport/ID
What they don't tell you is that most of the Asia culture artifacts were stolen from WWII and in fact, not donated. There is also oddly a real Egyptian mummy that they have open on display. Very creepy, a corpse on view for children and the like.
