This city gate is an amazing medieval structure. Even with trolly cars, automobiles, and ebikes whizzing past it and through it, it is still easy to imagine the gate doing its job of protecting a city.

A historical city gate which was constructed in 1356. Behind the gate there are old and beautiful houses 👍

The Spalentor (Gate of Spalen, formerly Gate of Saint Paul) is a former city gate of the city of Basel. It is one of the three city gates that still exist today and is under monument protection. The Spalentor was the most elaborate city gate of Basel and is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Switzerland. 🇨🇭✨

When you pass through this door, which you see when walking between normal buildings, the dates and appearance of the houses change as if you are traveling in time.

The Spalentor (Gate of Spalen) is the most magnificent and impressive of the three city gates still remaining from the city fortifications dating from 1400.
In times gone by, many important supplies and provisions entered the city through this gate having arrived from Alsace. Its square main tower, flanked on each side by two round towers, would have been seen long before arriving at the gates of the city. The façade facing away from the city is also decorated with three figures dating back to the 15th century - the Madonna and two prophets.

A beautiful ancient door of the Town, built in the 15th century . The latest renovation was in 2014. You can see the antik door of wood. The roof is also wonderful, even under a grey sky.
Go straight and you'll join the center of Basel.
It's only a "passage" and not a museum.
