Velankanni Beach

It was a great weekend with quality time.
We went as a family and had fried fish near the beach shore which was really good than i expected apart from that few chaat items were also available, few small games was also available.

Last time the beach was not visible because of the sea coming in but this time we were able to enjoy the beach. So plan your visit accordingly if you like to have a good beach experience.

A very popular beach. All the incoming waves were beautiful and sunrice view is amazing to see in the morning and it is a must visit place. Alcohol drinkers should avoid throwing alcohol bottles on the beach.

Velankanni Beach, one of the prominent attractions of the region, is located in the Nagapattinam District and it lies on the coastline of the Bay of Bengal. Velankanni village is located towards the south of this beach and was believed to be the port for trading with various western countries such as Rome and Greece.

The holy Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health is located near the beach and attracts a significant number of devotees every year.

A pathway from the church entrance leads to the beach and there are a lot of small shops on either side of this pathway. I was appalled by the state of this beach. You will see a lot of rubbish strewn all over the beach. I cannot imagine how people get into the water, the garbage strewn all around would surely make it into the water when the tide rises. The beach is very poorly maintained and there are no lifeguards in sight.

If you want to sample the food you see on the little carts and shacks on the beach, I suggest you take utmost care. There are food joints with variety of fish, squid,crab etc. But the made is quite local. Everyone may wont like it.

Velankanni church is an old and popular church. It has a very traditional value. It has an exceptionally beautiful view.There is so much to walk and see there. The worst thing in velankanni church is it is not at all clean. There is sand inside the church. It should be properly maintained and cleaned by the authorities because it is a highly devotional place. 🙏

The beach is visited by many tourists and locals who see the church. On the weekends it is obviously very crowded, but toward the end of the beach it’s a bit quieter there. We sat on the chairs at the stall, ordered some juice and water while our friends played in the beach. It’s extremely hot and there isn’t any shady area or umbrellas for hire, but it’s ok for a quick visit. On the way to the beach you can buy ice Gola which is very tasty and thirst quenching.
