Red Lobster Restaurant

Nice change to nearby big hotel, not as reasonably priced as other restaurants in the nearest town Benthotha (try seashell restaurant in Benthotha, about £5 there & back in tuk tuk). I wanted to try the giant shrimp which I'd seen on reviews, so ordered garlic prawns, but I got king prawns as large ones were apparantly out of season. They were as you'd expect garlic king prawns to be, have to say not entirely convinced they were fresh but it was quiet monsoon season & we were the only people in there the whole evening, so so I'd understand if they weren't. Came with a lovely fresh salad of not too sweet fruit like papaya etc that complimented the fish perfectly, along with a giant bowl of veggie rice which was cooked beautifully, certainly no chance of leaving hungry! Other people had the whole grilled fish which they said was very good.
It's a family run casual restaurant, mum who cooked & son who served were a great team & very attentive. Be aware 10% service charge is added automatically, which seems to be common practise, I think there may be a government tax added too - I didn't see a bill but it was about 25% more than I expected it to be, just over 7000 (about £20) for the prawns & a lion beer. The loos are pretty grim, so go before you go, lol.

Amazing evening with friends in one of the best family owned seafood spots in town! We managed to make a reservation and order our dishes evening before therefore the owners bought everything fresh this morning in local fish market especially for us! Be sure to order garlic or chilli prawns as they’re kings of the house and lobster is also to die for ;) A must see for everyone in Kalutara!

What a really lovely experience! Restaurant is a few doors away from the gates of the Anantara resort. There's not a huge amount of tables so my husband went to have a look during the afternoon and get a menu. He ended up chatting to the owner and having a beer! I recommend booking with them and if you're after seafood then try to let them know what you want so they can arrange everything fresh that day. We had garlic butter prawns (requested with just the tails for ease) and they were amazing! This came with rice, salad and daal. The restaurant is attached to the front of their house and the whole family get involved with serving. If you want a truly authentic Sri Lanka family meal, this is the place. Wonderful food served with love.

The sea food soup was perfect, cuttlefish fish and shrimp was cooked perfectly and was a good starter. Sea food rice was very good was already half full with the sup but finished the rice too. prizes was good with the current situation in Sri Lanka. location was good too enjoyed the restaurant a lot. Pleasant surprise was that it was home cooking done by the owner's mom.

This restaurant is a local gem. We were staying at Anantara and we thought to try it given the reviews are good. The restaurant is basically the front yard of a house so it is basic but this is exactly why you go there. Food is excellent and the owner is very welcoming. Prawns and Lobster are better than the 5 star hotels nearby at 1/5th of the price. Try the Red Lobster it you are around and support the local owner.

If you are a fan of sea food free of MSG, this is the best place to be with your family. Very friendly owner. Clean and small place. It will take some time to prepare your order as they dont have any precooked item to serve you. Everything you order will be freshly cooked that time and served. They only accept cash.
