Wonderful to explore the ruins and gardens. I then went into the house and enjoyed seeing the recreated rooms. There was lots to do and a lovely cafe in the barn.
I'm really impressed with this English Heritage location, and I'm annoyed with myself for not allocating more time in my day to my visit. As a member I'm not entirely sure whether each site is good value for money, but compared to some other locations it's a steal. The history here is so rich, and there is a small museum/information centre to brush up on your knowledge in the stables (where the cafe and bookshop are located). The Elizabethan gardens are stunning and the ruins are quite extensive. The staff were lovely and I ended up needing another hour or so to get through everything. The gatehouse closes at 4 so I wasn't able to see the inside, but it looked fantastic. If you're a fan of the Elizabethans, give yourself enough time for a tour, tea/picnic and good look around because this is a pretty important piece of history.
This was an amazing day. From parking to departing this castle is very large and very ornate. The history focuses heavily on the buildings addition for the Queen back 500 years ago. I don’t recall seeing anything about its military use or history from the 12th century onwards. Still impressive how much of its partial ruins you are able to roam freely around in. Spectacular views and an impressive garden and aviary as well. Tours and a tea room and visitors shops are on premise.
Great day out for all the family! Visited for the day for the medieval festival and wasn't disappointed. It was pretty busy but that didn't take away from the brilliant show or awesome atmosphere.
Great restaurant, the ruins are spectacular and there were plenty of facilities available ie baby change.
Parking isn't excellent but there is a carpark across the road near the pub which is also lovely!

Great half day out. Exploring the ruins was interesting and fun. There are opportunities for walks and lots of space if you have younger children. Dogs were also welcome as well.
Fab English Heritage property. We got to the car park at 10:20 and the main car park was already full so we parked on the Euro Car Park and walked back round.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and keen to get us to buy membership!

Excellent visit.. Very interesting with quite a lot to see. We spent at least 3 hours here! You can freely climb the walls and explore the ruins via the well laid out footpaths. We visited during half term and there were actors demonstrating medieval skills and guided tours!
Really cool place, recommend a visit! Good local pubs within walking distance from the castle for an after visit meal/rest.

Really great day out visiting somewhere new. Lots of history and displays explaining what happened. The gardens are lovely and it's great you can still go up the castle ruins and imagine what it was like. The staff made it though, they were so friendly and knowledgeable!!
