Gate at end of the Devotional Portico that leads up to San Luca Basilica.
Beautiful historical site! Start your climb to S Luca from here and stop for some ice cream underneath the loggiato!

Imposing architecture, surrounded by green space - but noisy and polluting traffic all around it

Palazzo Re Enzo is located in the historic center of Bologna. The palace was named after the son of Frederick II. He was a prisoner here from 1249 until his death in 1272. The palace is currently used for cultural events.

Great!?

Pretty arch, it is the start of 3,5 km portico that leads to Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca.
Porta Saragozza is a historic gate in Bologna, Italy. It was built in the 14th century and is the most important gate of the city. The gate is located at the end of a long porticoed road, which is a very popular tourist destination. Visitors can take a relaxing walk along the porticoed road and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Porta Saragozza is a true masterpiece of medieval architecture that combines elegance, strength and simplicity. It is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in history and culture. Surrounding the gate, visitors can find various restaurants, bars and shops which provide a great opportunity to taste some of the local food and drinks.

"Porta Saragozza is a magnificent medieval gate that is the perfect place to soak up Bologna's history and culture. The long porticoed road is a great place to take a relaxing stroll and the surrounding area offers plenty of dining and shopping options." 🫶🏻😍

Italy is known for having amazing churches every where. These is one of them. Worth visiting

I was living here for a week whilst at school here.
Nice area of Bologna, glad I found out about it. From here, via San Stefano takes you all the way to the center. My favourite bar is here! Will be back!

Porta Maggiore stands at the eastern end of the historic center, along the Via Emilia in the direction of San Lazzaro , at the point where it changes its name from Strada Maggiore to Via Mazzini, at the intersection with the current viali di Circonvallazione . Built for the first time in the second half of the 13th century , made of brick , for centuries it was the main gate of Bologna.
Amazing old palace.

Bologna has a welcome card which costs €25. This cards provides you with access to museums, palaces etc as part of the price. The card gives you access to the palace. The palace is only open certain times of the year. You need to book a time slot to visit. It is opened from 10:00-17:50pm. The palace is not big.

Two adjoining squares in the heart of the city, water splashing in the magnificent Neptune Fountain, which gives Piazza del Nettuno its name. Piazza Maggiore is located right in the centre of the city and serves as an important historical place.Fantastic vibe and atmosphere

Bellissima architettura.
Molto bello e imponente andate a visitarlo

Looks too modern for my taste
In the beautiful Piazza del Nettuno there is an interesting and beautiful palace, Palazzo Re Enzo. It takes its name from Enzo of Sardinia, Frederick II's son, who was prisoner here, from 1249 until his death in 1272. The palace was built between 1244-1246. as an extension of the nearby Palazzo del Podestà, which had proven insufficient for the exigencies of the Commune of Bologna. It was therefore initially known as the Palatium Novum ("New Palace"). The historical story is extremely interesting but at the same time very sad. Enzo was an illegitimate son of the Hohenstaufen emperor Frederick II, who appointed him 'King of Sardinia' in 1238. He played a major role in the wars between Guelphs and Ghibellines in the creation of Imperial kingdoms of Italy. Enzo was captured 1249 by the Guelphs at the Battle of Fossalta, and after a short stay in Anzola he was moved here, where he remained until his death. Enzo was allegedly left free within the palace by day, but by night he was kept into a cage hanging from the ceiling. He was also allowed to meet women, it is mentioned that he had three daughters, but a legend talks about a fourth son he had with a peasant woman, Lucia di Viadagola. Subsequent history is extremely important and interesting. The son was called Bentivoglio, from the words "Amore mio, ben ti voglio" that he said to his beloved (meaning "My love, I'm fond of you"), and he would be the ancestor of the Bentivoglio family, later rulers of Bologna. The interior of the Palace is beautiful. At the centre of the colonnaded courtyard, there is an ancient sandstone well, while on the right-hand side you will find the ancient Chapel of St. Mary of Prisoners, which was recently restored and decorated by British artist David Tremlett. On the first floor from the loggia, the Salone del Podestà is accessed through a covered passageway and a majestic solid wood door. The spacious Salone del Podestà, which was once a courtroom, was used as a Public Theatre between 1581 and 1767 (the second version of the Euridice was performed here in 1616) and later became a court for ball games. Beautiful Sala re Enzo is located on the second floor of the building and covers around 400 sqm.

Great little museum in this place with a fully comprehensive overview of the history of the porticoes and the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca. Best English translations of any museum I saw in Bologna. Free, friendly, and some nice views from the roof too!

Great view for only 5€!
Dominiert von edlen Palazzi aus dem 13. bis 16. Jahrhundert.

The tower is at a bigger angle than Pisa, but it is far less glamorous. Still a worthwhile visit if in bologna
Nothing really important to see, we arrived there by error looking for Piazza Santo Stefano, different places!!! Little far away from the historical center, for visiting it
Worth a visit
