Great place, please make sure to get inside one of historical windmill (the Kat for example).
Also great cheese tasting experience. Perfect 5/5. Beautiful countryside, somewhat unfortunately surrounded by industrial zones.

Very nice place to visit during your trip to Amsterdam, don’t pay for the full entrance ticket it’s not worth it, we walked around for free and had some delicious waffles in one of the cafes. Don’t miss the souvenir shops
Beautiful little town. But can’t visit when weather is windy or rainy. Nice to see the windmills. Crowded during season time. Nice clog shops and gift shops!
In the year of 2017, I wandered through the verdant meadows of Zaanse Schans, where Houtzaagmolen de Gekroonde Poelenburg stands as a silent guardian of yesteryears. As I beheld the windmill, its sails cutting through the air like the swift pen of destiny, I found myself transported to an era where the harmony between man and nature was scribed in the very landscape. The scenic views, with the windmill perched like a proud monarch of the land, spoke in hushed tones of a peace that dwells deep within the soul. Each turn of its blades was a verse in the poem of the Dutch countryside, a whisper of the enduring dance between the wind and the will.Amidst this pastoral idyll, the local Edam cheese, with its rich, creamy essence, was like a melody from the past, each bite a note that resonated with the simplicity and purity of the land. It was as if the cheese itself was imbued with the spirit of Zaanse Schans, a tangible relic of the artisan's craft and the pastoral muse that inspired it.To have stood in the shadow of Houtzaagmolen de Gekroonde Poelenburg, to have tasted the fruit of the land, was to have conversed with history. The experience was a serene communion with the past, a moment of beauty captured in the eternal flow of time. In that year of 2017, I walked through a landscape where every leaf and stone whispered the secrets of peace and craftsmanship, a testament to the enduring beauty that thrives in the gentle embrace of Zaanse Schans.
This place was definitely all geared up for tourists and wasn't quite what we were expecting.

There were Literally thousands of people everywhere (ok our fault we went on Easter Sunday) but it was hard to take in the beauty of the area.

We felt like sheep just been moved from one spot to the next on an invisible conveyer belt.

I'd love to visit on a less lively day. It was a little 'too touristy' and contrived.
Quiet and pretty place with a lot of old and beautiful houses. Also has very delicious crafted local cacao drinks and chocolates.
Questo piccolo mulino si trova al centro di Zaanse Shans. Molto carino e preso d'assalto dai turisti.
A beautiful little town.
It is worth the visit.
About 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam Central Station.
It is super well maintained, full of beautiful houses and mills.
There are cheese shops, several cafes, shops full of clogs... a beautiful place.
Lovely place to visit easy to get to via public busses or trains from Amsterdam centeral. Can walk around and go in the little shops and cheese shop which has the history before you enter. One of the saw windmills was open on Jan 1st which was lovely to go inside. Highly recommend.

De Kat was originally an oil mill but was rebuilt after a fire and is since a chalk mill. The chalk is combined with pigments to make paints. We had the I Amsterdam Card so we could go in for free, otherwise I think it's 2 or 3 euros to enter, but it's really worth it. You can climb up the steep stairs to go into the room with gears, and from there out onto the deck. From there you can see the blades (sails) upclose and also take a nice panoramic photo of other nearby mills. Definitely don't miss.
esperienza stupenda!

Very cool exhibit of what it looks like inside a windmill. You also learn about how it operates with education video. Definitely go outside on the deck and feel the power of the wind!!
A Dutch Delight: Zaanse Windmills Exceed Expectations!

it was an absolute delight! The picturesque landscape, dotted with charming windmills, took my breath away from the moment I arrived.

The guided tour provided fascinating insights into the history and mechanics of these iconic structures. Learning about their role in Dutch culture and industry was truly enlightening. The guides were knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about preserving this rich heritage.
If you're wanting to experience a true rendition of how industry used to work in the Netherlands and how windmills revolutionized it and the place of the country in the world, this is the place to visit. The mills are super interesting, with the sawmill actively sawing wood and another grinding limestone, with other options to see like chocolate making and cheese. They don't shy away from explaining the hard conditions and exploitation of serfs and the like to enable the growth of industry, which is thoughtful of them. Also, the whole air smells of chocolate. It's really cool to see such a well cared for and preserved historical site
This is not a place to skip when visiting Netherlands! Wonderful holland experience.

My husband and I took the train from Sciphol Airport to Zaanse Schans Station and rented a bicycle at euro10/hour each to explore the area. But do visit this place early to beat the crowd.

There’s a bicycle shop right at the exit of the train station as you walking towards the location. Never happier with the decision made. You can explore the area on feet and easily park the bike anywhere as it comes with build in lock. Just remember where you parked it 😉

There’s so much to see and explore. From mills to clogs museum, Cheese Tasting and Chocomel. Definitely a day trip worth exploring. Loving the scenery and nature, a great place to reconnect to nature and unload your busy mind.

Don’t forget to get some clogs and grab some instagramable pics with them too 🙂
Beautiful amd breath taking. Did a 3 hour tour from Amsterdam. Made our weekend extra special. Felt so peaceful and calm with breath taking views.
Outstanding experience. Learning how the Dutch make the clogs and cheese was a fantastic opportunity to understand their culture. We more in love with Holland. Breath taking views. Love feeling the calm and peace.

The most interesting windmill in Zaanse Schans, definitely worth the visit.
Seems to be the most popular though, the place was too crowded on a Sunday afternoon. They should regulate the number of visitors coming in.

Beware staircases inside are steep and I saw many elderly people struggling with it.
If you are coming with kids, keep on eye on them.

Also on windy days be careful not to get too close to the windmill sails on the observation deck because they are turning very quickly 😅
A must go when visiting Amesterdam

Recommended to visit early before the crowds

You can enjoy watching the Windmills and enter some of them.
There are Cafe, Cheese factory, souvenirs shops and 2 small museums.

Awesome place to enter during your visit to Zanse Schans. You can see how the windmill produces paint powder with its gears system. It’s also possible to climb to the top and enjoy the amazing views. The tickets cost 5,50 per adult and 3,50 kids. There’s also a small shop for souvenirs inside.

Very interesting and highly entertaining working windmill. The wooden machineries inside are an attraction in itself especially when working - definetely worth the 5.5 eur entrance fee.
Get on the top floor outside, see the panorama and maybe you'll be lucky to actually see how the windmill is rotated into the wind
Very crowded in the afternoon - so if you get there when is crowded, just pass on the the last mills - There are almost no turists visiting those.
Wunderschön
One of the best tourist attractions in Holland. My family and I enjoyed a lot and wish to visit again.

This windmill allows you to go upstairs to oversee the village, the entry costs 5.5 euros. I think it was a special experience, though the tour was rather short.

A must-do experience if you visit the Netherlands, go inside a windmill! We got there early, just before the tour buses. This particular windmill did not get too busy. You can go inside and climb right out on the deck when the windmill is doing its thing. Very cool on a beautiful day. Plus, it's amazing to see and hear the inside...
It's beautiful to go out and see the windmills. The museum looks cool, but it is closed on Mondays. Also, we went early, to beat the crowds but a few tour buses still arrived shortly after us. For only, 1.50€, you can take a ferry into town and walk the old town, it's pretty cool as well.
It’s a very nice place to visit with friends and family and also it’s a major tourist attraction while visiting Amsterdam. It gives you a bit of village fill and the understanding of the Dutch engineering history and how is they do many heavy work using wind mills. There are even farms and beautiful landscape which tourists love, generally it’s very crowded during weekends. Most of things you can enjoy without ticket but in windmill you have to pay for the visit and tour. Also don’t forget to visit the Dutch wooden clogs making machine there it’s free and they show the making of the wooden clog live and there is no ticket required

The windmills are so beautiful, so interesting, and they still work! It’s such a nice village to see, you get to see how they make their wooden shoes, how they made colors back then, how they used - and still do - cut woods. It’s beautiful! There are chocolate stores, coffee places, nice souvenirs, I mean, it’s so cool there. You should definitely see it!
