What a beautiful hike! We took the trail to the Sam Knob Summit, which was rated more difficult than the Sam Knob trail and I didn't think it was hard in any way. Yes there is some steps here and there but nothing too strenuous! You'll definitely need bug spray for this hike as you will be in the weeds lol. Also, wear good hiking!

This is one of my favorite waterfalls to take friends and family to visit from out of town. It's a short hike, lots of opportunities for photos, and it's beautiful!
While it's a short hike, the trip back up to the parking lot will make an inactive person lose their breath a bit.

The bear signs had me ready to sit in the car... I sharpened a 14-inch stick, and I felt safe. Plus, you see other people on the trail, which made me more comfortable. We hiked 9.4 miles in a loop. Beautiful sites, didn't see any bears. 👍🏾
If I did see one, It wouldn't have seen me 🏃🏾‍♀️‍➡️
My knees hurt, and my feet were soaked because it rained most of the time. But I felt like I was in man vs. Wild with the brush and mountainous terrain. The sharpened stick I grew attached to was named Wilson. He served me well. I only got scared that we were lost about 6 times. Luckily, we had our tour guide, Sam Sulek, to get us back on the right path. Over all 10/10 experience.

.....Also, use the bathroom before you get there. I can't describe the smell of the bathroom there.. I don't want to talk about it.. #traumatizing 🤢😷😭

Easy trail up to sam knob, it has a really nice view of the hills and is not hard to get to. Trail is pretty well maintained . This would be a good fall hike
You have to come check out these trails and falls! The trail was an easy hike and not long, although closer to the end keep an eye out for broken planks on the bridges (my leg fell through one and got a huge bruise lol). It was beautiful, there are plenty of parking spaces and a bathroom and is child and dog friendly.

Nice walk.
We were there end of March and there was ice on the trail and also at the falls in the morning. Most of it melted away when we were walking back to the parking. Parts of trail was muddy but not too bad. Pay attention to the trail markings else you will end up going in different direction. Hike is not hard. There are tree roots all over the trail so be careful stepping between roots. We were the only ones at the fall in the morning.

A dangerous amount of exposed metal all along the trail, continue up to the parkway for some much better hikes

This is the trailhead for Wash Hollow Falls and Lower Sam Branch Falls. Easy hike that requires creek crossings. Watch out for the rusted old logging cables!!!
Good
Really enjoyable trail. Has great views especially at the end, but a nice path through a field and woods first too. We liked the variety. Moderate to easy hike. There are some elevation climb sections and stairs, but nothing too crazy. Our dog loved this trail and covered it easily too (Boxer).
Awesome hike that takes you through varying ecosystems. The incline can be challenging if you’re not accustomed to them.

The summit itself has enough room to enjoy the view even if there are fellow hikers atop. The hike back down is gorgeous, as you walk through fields that lead you to think you’re no longer in NC anymore.

We did a loop with the belief that there was a swimming hole nearby. If you fall victim to this belief, like we did, there is no swimming hole. There are a few creeks in which you can wade in the water but no huge swimming hole.
Great hike. We went all the way to the top of the upper falls and it was definitely steep at the end. Like hands and feet kind of climbing. You can get to the bottom of the upper falls without climbing though. The first part of the loop was fairly flat and easy but lots of rocks and roots to navigate. A few manmade bridges and planks. There were also a couple of creeks to cross on the way to the upper falls. I’m short (5’0) and had to jump pretty hard to get across. There were people with kids and infants but my 5 and 2 year old wouldn’t have made it without a lot of carrying/help. There were lots of dogs. There were 3 restrooms with pit toilets. They were fairly clean and well stocked.
Great short hike to stunning views. Parking can be a but of a challenge on weekends and peak leaf watcher times but I've been here on weekdays with no issues. Great place to watch a sunset as long as you have a good light for the hike back down after dark.
We only got to the lower falls, just about 20 min to get there. I would qualify as moderate because it has a lot of stairs and roots on the ground to watch for. 1/3 rd is paved. The waterfalls/slide is very nice. Not the best for photography but very pleasant.
Easy short hike to this waterfall.
Great spot to catch early Fall color. Super busy so go early on a weekday. Easy paved trail to the first spot. Wood planks on the trail down to the base of the falls have seen better days and there are some large holes to pass over.
Didn’t get any mountain views today, but the forests were already beginning to get lush and green. A few creek crossings and numerous camp spots along the trail. Parking fills quick, and bathrooms at trailhead. Lovely trail!
The meadow was such a sweet surprise. We were not expecting the wildflowers! The views were spectacular, and we didn't see crowds of folks, which we enjoy. The climb is not bad, smooth inclines/switchbacks. Worth it!

Super busy area. We decided to take a quick picture from the road and keep going because of the congestion.
Very nice well maintained trail to take you to the upper falls or lower falls. There are rocks and roots to watch out for but the waterfall at the end is well worth the hike
A wonderful mid October hike. We got up here at 8:20 AM and parking was plentiful, approximately half the lot was full. The weather was very chilly approximate 42° and very windy, 20 to 30 mile an hour winds.

The trail itself is incredibly well-maintained, and down to the lower Falls. It is paved and even has a boardwalk. Very very easy to descend to the first falls. We took the longer hike to the upper Falls and there is only one section that has a decent hike upwards proximately 250 feet elevation gain. Not a bad hike. Easy to moderate difficulty. He will need hiking shoes due to lots of rocks and roots everywhere. Moderate amount of mud.
Beautiful trail to see the leaves changing along the blue ridge parkway. You come across creek crossings, wildflowers, rock stair cases and boardwalks. 3 miles total. Dog friendly if on leashes.
The trail is very well maintained to the tower. The views from the tower are very impressive and breathtaking. Recommended for all ages. The parking area is just off the Blue Ridge Parkway and can be very crowded on busy weekends.
Beautiful spot to catch a sunset!

Hike is up a paved road that is less than a mile long.

Be prepared, it can get very windy and cool up there.
I would get here early as the parking lot always seems full, but definitely worth the stop! Restrooms and some nice signage at the trailhead, and then a short walk down some steps and a path to the bridge that crosses the falls. There wasn't a bunch of water running through this time of year, but it made it extra easy to step off the bridge and onto the colorful rock in the middle of the falls. My dog and I enjoyed the quick stop!
The falls are great and views are breathtaking. But trails need to marked clearly. I got lost and spent maybe more than 30 minutes trying to figure out my way back to the trail ( I can't thank enough the person who put those pink ribbons on trees that led me back to the trail. Or I'd be spending the night in woods)
9/13/23 Warning... Bears! Three people told me there weren't bears here, so i let my dogs off leash. 5-10 minutes in, we heard rustling, and my dog takes off after it. I look up, and there's a bear climbing a tree 50 feet in front of me. We got out of there fast. It was pretty scary.
Beautiful place and the rocks look like they are covered in glitter because of all the mica
A short hike and a gentle elevation gain. The gravel road has tons of wild flowers, making for a nice hike. The tower is worth the climb, if you are brave enough. Parking is minimal, but assuming it isn't packed you should be ok. Not much room on the stairs, so if there are several groups you are gonna likely want to wait at the bottom. Beautiful view from the top.
It was actually an easy hike. All gravel and just a small incline
I brought my 3 yr old and she had fun
An easy trail through the beautiful valley of graveyard fields. Paved down the hill to the stairs and bridge to help you cross the river. The loop trail is great for those not wishing to gain too much elevation on your hike.

Easy access for my motorcoach bus and plenty of parking. Close to shopping.
As of writing this - July 29th, 2023 - there is in fact a big, potentially unpassable washout. There is a sign at the trailhead providing warning, and the washout itself is a little over a mile in. You could take Old Butt Knob Trail to the Shining Rock area, OR.... If you're stubborn and careful enough, you can try to pass the washout. :) My husband and I were able to pass with our two dogs. I would definitely consider it sketchy, though, and I wouldn't recommend it unless you're very sure footed and have experience on these trails. I also wouldn't recommend doing it in really wet conditions. It was already slippery and unstable enough without an added layer of water! But, that being said, the first mile of the trail is real moderate and gorgeous along the creek, so you might as well at least walk to the washout and then decide. Or, again, you can take Old Butt Knob Trail instead. Definitely a beautiful area! Overall, this trail is not for beginners. Slippery, some mud, very thin and eroding trails, lots of roots and rocks. Pretty decent elevation, too, once you hit the second mile. As an experienced hiker, I quite enjoyed it! But be aware it's not going to be a fast or easy hike. Well worth the amazing and near constant view of the creek.
It is a trek through a winding trail, up, down and around until you get to a spectacular falls and pool area. The hike itself is worth the effort because of the beauty. Parts of it are like walking through a mangrove tunnel of trees. You'll see a few streams along the way too. The swim area is a clean, clear, rocky area. You can sit on rocks if you want to just enjoy without getting wet.
Great little trail for beginners like us. Little over a mile up and back. Has some good viewing at the top. If you can walk the stairs and not be afraid of heights, the firetower has amazing views.

The Downside is the cell tower and national weather service equipment that is stationed there as well
Great trail right off the parkway with good parking, though it was pretty busy the day I went. We started by the restrooms at the North end of the parking lot, taking the stairs down to Second Falls and then taking the loop from there up to the Upper Falls and then back to the parking lot. The trail did get a little confusing in the muddy section towards the Upper Falls, but nothing leads you too far off track. Nice falls and a nice trail minus the muddy sections.

Great short hike. It’s an in and back Trail 1.5 miles in total. The 0.75 miles to the tower is a steady incline the entire way. It has a wide gravel path. Well worth the effort 👍🏻👍🏻

Lovely spot with great trails. Trails are not well marked and it is easy to take a wrong turn.
Great hiking. The water was low but fishing was great, catching was a little slow.
It doesn't take long to do the circuit. There are two separate loops and an offshoot that continues south toward the Rouge and one that'll head west toward Griffin Park.
We didn't hike the whole trail. We just went in a short ways and found steps that took us to the river bank and we enjoyed that area.
Moderate to hard hike, in my opinion. 2.6 miles to the upper falls.
Easy on the front half, a little more difficult on the back half. Not a full cascading water fall. But finding a waterfall is always worth the challenge of getting there 🤣
Fairly small parking area. The wide gravel trail to the top is well kept, but the climb is unrelenting. If you don't hike often, you will be out of breath at the top.

Absolutely fabulous views in every direction from the tower stairs, which are freely accessible and appear to be in pretty good condition. The high railings and fairly generously sized landings are reassuring, especially as the tower sways during high winds.

The top deck containing the lookout's cabin appears to be locked up tight. There is a small opening at the top of the stairs where someone has bent back the grate, but I decided not to crawl through there today. Maybe next time.

This not "Upper Sunburst" Falls - this isn't even the same creek that Sunburst is on. This is Lower Sam Branch Falls and Wash Hollow Falls.
The trails are very difficult in places, which I love because it’s a good challenge. The hills aren’t too bad, but the trails are less than 1 foot wide in some places with a 6-10 foot drop into the river. It’s awesome. Totally worth it, and it’s one of my favorite spots in the world. If you go, just be careful.
Absolutely loved this waterfall the only downside is there were lots of people on the trails. This is in my opinion the easiest hike off the BRP. Both upper and lower falls are easily accessible from the parking lot on a mostly flat trail except for the stairs at the beginning and going to the lower falls.

Beautiful place!!
Well kept trail that has packed gravel up to the fire tower which unfortunately the top of the tower was locked but you can still climb it
Nice Trustees property with lots to offer in all seasons. Lots of blooming items in the spring and summer. Fantastic winter lights show. Short hikes around the property.
A stiff hike. Beautiful in fall with the changing foliage. Steams with gorgeous woods all around.

Be prepared to go up and down some serious hills.
Easy trail to a playful, spectacular waterfall. The trail gets a bit muddy over a few hundred yards and social trails that were once created to avoid the mud are now confusing. Best download a map onto your phone for added confidence. Some blazing/ blocking, or a board walk would make it a more enjoyable walk.
At the falls don't miss the opportunity to take a scramble trail up to the top (on the right site of the falls) for gorgeous views. The scramble is difficult and being on top of a waterfall is very dangerous, so please make good decisions.
The trail is washed out just short of two miles up, however, there are a few trails leading to some very nice spots along the creek.

Once of my favorite places in the world

Beautiful hike along the river and lots of places to get down to the river.

We come spend a day here every summer with the kids and bring swimsuits and a picnic lunch. Spots to just walk in the shallows or swim in deeper pools.

Good camping along the river too but bring bear canisters (required beyond recommended)

While the trail isn’t well marked just stick to the river

One of my favorite trails has a new look since the flood, but don't think for a second that this isn't still one of the most beautiful trails in WNC. There may be new things to look out for and a slightly different view in places but this trail is definitely worth a visit. You can go for miles so be prepared and aware.
Hike up the trail and back in the woods there will be some beautiful waterfalls.
Nice large gravel access at the Shining Creek Trail access area. There is plenty of room for several cars with a little bit of overflow parking in a space across the street.

Lovely trails around the estate. Lots of beautiful flowers, still more to come bloom later in the year. Interesting information from a gentleman who lives across the street walking the trails for 52 years, who used to take care of the lady who lived here.
Great views of Yellowstone Prong River. Scenic Trail all the way to Greasy Knob Trail.

Easy and exciting hike. After the first big wooden walking bridge take the path to the Lower Falls. From there it's around 5 minutes and a couple of stairs to a wooden platform that gives you the following stunning view.
Trails are obvious, even the side trails and one offs with no markings. Plenty of cut offs to the river, we wound just meandering and enjoying ourselves. I'll probably make the 90 minute journey at least one more time during my stay. Fantastic trail series.
Loved this moderate hike, plenty of camping alcoves, nearly all of the hike is along a beautiful river with some swimming and fishing holes, not well marked but fairly easy to be close to trail.
If you enjoy trails along Rivers, and are not a novice hiker, I recommend this trail.

Beautiful waterfall and pool. The trail was nice with lots of shade. Our kids (4 yr and 10 yr) had no problem hiking down to the fall and back. I enjoyed a dip, but my kinds felt the water was too cold. Grandma (an a grandma from another family) had a hard time climbing back up. I would give 5 stars but the restrooms were dirty (dirty toilet paper on the floor and looked like they had not been cleaned for a week).

Excellent stop along the parkway! Lots of hiking trails, easy difficulty. Calm wading pools. Beautiful falls for photos. Lots of parking and there are restrooms available.
Had a strenuous but fun hike up Old Butt Knob and back along the Shining Creek trail. It was breezy and a little too cold for my liking. Hope to visit again when it's warmer! (Lost the trail a little ways into Shining Creek - hiked straight down and found the trail again after ten minutes or so)
