KRRT is a popular trail that is often busy. The paved trail is great for all activities from walking to riding.
Please only ride this trail on gravel or mountain bikes. We came from an hour away expecting a paved trail and were sorely disappointed. The pictures on trail sites were of the very short paved sections. We rode the whole trail out and back and logged 19.2 miles. Definitely some sketchy folks out on the trail smoking weed and others hanging out. Some homeless along the trail as it goes past the medical center.
Beautiful trail, but there was a very rude guy on a bicycle who was yelled and cussed at my and my dog. So will not be going there again
I love this trail for running, walking, just getting outside in general. Plenty of space for people who understand it’s a shared space. I go in from the Sav Rapids bc I am more afraid of the bridge on the other side. Plenty of bike riders and place to rent bikes. I saw a little snake one day. Yikes lol. It’s hikers out there. I love to look at the plants and flowers as well. I have only went 4 miles into the trail. I hate that some people leave bags of poop on the trail but it’s the people not the trail. It smells a little rank of dog pee at the entrance sometimes too BUT again it’s not bad and it’s people and dogs Not the trail. It’s a 22 min drive from me but so worth it. Great for sunny days when I want to workout outside and have some shade. I see kayakers on the water and it’s a place to rent kayaks. It’s just a great spot for outdoor activity. It’s a playground out there at the rapids too. The path is mainly dirt with a few asphalt areas from the previous structures and structures to create the space. Animals MUST be leashed. Consideration of others is expected in this public space. Plenty of parking. Bridge is wide enough for a wheelchair just don’t remember if the little lip on it is smooth or raised. I recommend it any time of day it’s open and go with friends for an even better experience. Access to fishing, bathrooms and other things you might need before entering the trail. Plenty of parking. Take the kids to burn energy and enjoy nature.

Lovely!!! Visited 7/8/24 for an evening walk. Beautiful area and an asset for the city of Augusta. Ties into the canal walking path and head gates of the canal. Great place to walk, run, and explore. Highly recommend.
A paved trail that extends about 7.5 miles all the way south to downtown Gardiner. It's paved the whole way, though it sometimes disappears for a bit and forces you out onto the street. It's mostly pretty flat and only has a few mild hills while it passes through the forests along the bank of the Kennebec. Lots of small streams, overlooks, benches, and wetlands along the whole trail. There are plenty of entrances and exits as it passes through the various cities as well. It's always well trafficked with people, bikes, and dogs, though it's not plowed during the winter
A fun place to take a short walk in town in Augusta. The trails are very well maintained and take you through diverse ecosystems like prairies, wetlands, natural forests, and orchards. Most trails are pretty flat too, and they are all well marked, so you're never far from a sign showing you what trail you're on. The trails are well used by the community throughout the year, but I never had any trouble finding a spot in the parking lot. There's also a gift shop with bathrooms and some local nature merchandise at the front too.

Really easy and beautiful place to walk and have lunch. Nice clean gazebos.
What a beautiful walk and very well maintained path!
Nice trail for a bicycle ride or walking. Biked this 12-miler for the first time; spanning several towns from Augusta to Hallowell, Farmingdale, and ending at the Hannaford parking lot in Gardiner. Most of this Rail Trail is paved or gravel. Several spots along this trail sustained significant damage from severe windstorms this past winter. Nice views of the Kennebec River. CAUTION: this trail crosses very busy street traffic in Hallowell; several times I attempted to walk my bike across this street using the designated crosswalk and numerous drivers completely disregard yielding the crosswalk or their faces are buried in their cellphones while driving.

Nice paved trail. The views are blocked now to the river due to the trees and leaves. We went about 2 miles starting from the Augusta side. We went around 10am and it was not overly sunny. Will be back for more walks here.

Lots of ease of access for wheelchair users. Id recommend starting at the lake and working your way down. Some of the trail is unpaved, so ensure your chair can go off road.

The trails are mixed use for EBikes, Paddle bikes, and walker/ runners.

Id recommend making your way to the clearing, it has restrooms, a place to lay a blanket , and a great view! The path was washed out to this area on my visit bur was still negotiable.

Been going here a lot lately and they've been doing alot of clearing and cleaning up. This is by far the most peaceful and beautiful places to visit in Augusta. Just keep walking past the Water Works building to see for yourself.
You can enter Eisenhower park and walk down toward the train tracks if you don't want to walk far. It takes you toward the Water Works building.
Great place to walk and exercise! Right on the Kennebec River from Augusta, through Hallowell, to Gardiner. 7 miles total. Beautiful scenery, friendly hellos and a lot of cute babies and dogs! It doesn't feel like exercise at all!
Bond Brook was overflowing, winds howling, pouring rain but had a great walk.

It was my first visit at Viles Alboretum.
I visited on Saturday, December 16 2023.
I arrived at about 12:30, it was about 38 to 40 degrees f
The trails were a bit slippery and muddy along the way.
We just had 8" of snow fall on us a week before, and then the outside temperature would rise during the daytime and freeze during the evenings.
It was 40*f on Satuday, and the sun was shining as you will witness in the photos that I have provided of the property.

There are 3 trails that you can hike at Viles Alboretum,
The longest being 1.25 miles and 2 others that are approximately
.5 miles in length.
They are all relatively easy to stroll along and are pet friendly as long as you keep your pet on a leash and dispose your dogs waste products in the proper dispensaries.
There are also some common sense rules in place not to disturb the wildlife or forage on the many acres of property.
Please don't litter.

The staff that I met along one of the trails was very friendly as well as informative.
The scenery and wildlife at this Sanctuary are beautiful!

The conversations that I had with others on he Crossroads and trails at Viles Alboretum were priceless!
I will be sure to visit again!
Donation boxes are present for those who would like to donate to the cause.

Beautiful walking trail along the river.
My pet April and I have been to the beautiful River front Walk several times. We have parked free at both ends and found hallowell might have a few more spaces.

I took my first walk here last weekend. There was litter kicking about the trails, sadly. The landscaping was nice, and the trails were well marked, though. I'd travel up there for a walk again.
I'm unsure where to put this, but I did the 10-mile loop a couple of weeks ago, which was beautiful. Started at 7ish and it was great! I saw a lot of people getting after it! Walkers, hikers, runners with their dogs, even a high school cross country team (I think) was out there and they were flying. It’s also a generally flat course, just watch out for the occasional pot hole.

I've gotta say, while the prime time to come see the Vile A would be in the summer, the trails are still very pretty to walk in the fall. And who doesn't want to see the nut tree? Or the bunch of dogs who come with their humans?
Absolutely gorgeous walkway, and in the summer it's fully green, and a good walk. You get to see the river, puppies on their walks. Great date idea too.

Nice 7 or 8 mile rail trail. I always start at the 5 mile marker and go towards Augusta. It's paved and there are Portapotties. The only down side is the trail goes through Hallowell and, unless I've been missing something, you have to go right down Water St.

Great trail system, well maintained. Can easily add on additional steps if desired. There are some benches on a few of the trails and many of the trees in the main area have signs describing them. Plenty of parking, but it does get busy so I could see the lot filling up on gorgeous days.
The mountain bike trails here are great. The road access up allows you to ride several down hills by either parking at the bottom or the top completing a circuit. A mix of trails.

In need of an escape from the day-to-day? Viles Arboretum is a quiet, calming respite from reality! Whether you’re focused on nature, hiking, art, or solitude, each can be readily accessed by a walk into these welcoming wild fields. Beautiful, vibrant, and wonderful, this FREE attraction is a gift to everyone in Maine!
Such a beautiful, easy trail is a wonderful place to see the sturgeon jumping. A small slice of nature is right downtown.
Good dog walking spot kinda muddy

Nice water fall. While this isn’t a trail head or a trail there are trails here that are great for walking, running and biking.

Great family hiking & biking trail! Dog friendly! Wide/double-track, paved & hard-packed trail, approximately 8 miles one-way from Savannah Rapids to downtown Augusta. Scenic, flat and easy ride to just get out, relax, walk or pedal and take in the scenery and fresh air. With historic sites along the way, a lush canopy overhead and the Savannah River and Augusta Canal flanking you on either side, a leisurely walk or ride makes for a perfect day! We parked at Savannah rapids, pedaled to Augusta and back for a wonderful day outdoors.

Scenic behind and in front of the building. Always clean. Bathroom breaks inside the building.
A very nice riverside trail that runs from Augusta to Gardiner along an old rail line, I have no complaints, a pretty standard riverwalk rail trail all around

We just moved in the area and are looking for new trails to take the doggo for a run. Found this one on google maps, tried to go here last week but couldn’t figure out where to actually park and get there.😂 Was looking at the trail map online and found out we had to go first to Eisenhower park then walk like 5mins to the trail (follow the train tracks towards the steel bridge and cross the small bridge on the left). The start of the trail is to the left of the Augusta water works building. It’s a beautiful trail with lots of shade. 13 mins from the entrance of the trail is a clearing where you can just sit in front of the river and enjoy nature. 🥰
P.s. check your dog for fleas after walking the trail!
This is a beautiful walkway. We parked very close to the bridge and walked about 2 miles south to Hallowell and had lunch near the Granite City Park. It’s a paved trail and easy to walk or ride bikes on. The area we walked was well maintained and there were lots of people using the trail. We easily walked from the river trail to the Capitol Park as well. If you have the opportunity, you should walk or ride this lovely trail.

Scenic and vast trail system, surprisingly right in the heart of Augusta. There's a parking lot with ample spots to which in Summer, during vacation season, it was nice to be able to drive straight into the Arboretum and not have to search for parking.
Leading up to the forested trails were interesting stone sculptures, which is a nice touch, and there was even a cute little bee farm!
The only major criticism I would have is that the trails aren't as well managed, not completely neglected, but there were points along the paths where me and my husband had to trudge through fallen tree needles and small twigs which made it a chore to walk. All in all, it's a good way to get out and explore nature without having to drive out of the way and with a walk which isn't rigorous. We will be going again sometime in the fall as I expect the trees and crops will be pretty.

2022-07: This area is absolutely beautiful. It can be busy with people coming and going around the area during the day, but everyone is just out enjoying nature, doing their thing. Just upsetream is a world of it's own with the wildlife and the small fish. And snakes. Just down from the falls, turtles, fish, river rats, and more are abundant. The Reed Creek Falls have changed a bit recently but still offer a serene setting or an adventurous time if you really look around diligently enough. (My current Google photo was taken here a couple of years ago.) It's a completely different world at night, too... 🧐 🫣🫣 🤔 😃
This place is a nice place to escape in the middle of town. The walking trails are pretty well kept. The bike trails have some iffy spots. A nice spot for a picnic.
This is an amazing and exciting place to walk and enjoy nature. There are several trails to take depending on how much walking you would like to do. If you enjoy birding... this is a one place you have to go. It is a hot spot for birders. Check out the visitor and gift shop area. They have many programs for all ages.
Great outdoors hiking area. Parts of trail next to brook.
This is a beautiful multiuse trail in the heart of augusta. This is a moderately challenging uphill climb that can be hiked or accessed by car on paved trail roads. In winter trails are groomed for skiing or snowshoes. No toilets but plenty of free parking and great scenery. Trails go on and on so multiple visits are encouraged.

It's a neat historical site. I wish I had a fishing pole.
What a great day to spend here. The sun popped out and I got some nice pictures, it wasn't crowded, and some folks were fishing and boating too. Nice peaceful walk....

A neat pump house used to regulate water between the canal and river. There's also a decent place to put in a canoe.
Went hiking here a few weeks ago and will DEFINITELY be back to shred the trails on my mountain bike. They have an abundance of trails and they were all well maintained.
I absolutely love these trails. It's very peaceful, beautiful with well marked trails. The cold water brook is refreshing to play in after a hot summer walk

Short trail, easy access.
Mountain biking in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter. The organizers of this area have done a terrific job of creating and maintaining a system of trails right in the middle of Augusta. The skiing is a lot more advanced than the gentle slopes of Viles Arboretum across town. Summer or winter it's a lovely country walk in the middle of Augusta.
