This kind of hidden museum tells the early story of Stockholm, and you can se the remains of the first city wall, which was actually not discovered until the end of the 20th century.

In the museum, you can see a lot of exciting displays, and there are things for kids as well.

Best of all, the museum is free, and you can store your luggage for free as well.

In order to find the entrance, you actually have to walk around the Parliament and then enter from the basement.

Visited with my brother and my teenage daughter. They too found it interesting.
I was there couple of years ago, as I can see now it is temporarily closed. Wondering if it means renovation and improvements - would be excited to see more. We had an amazing visit already back then. Free entry, great expositions, miniatures and information presented in an interesting way. Great location, right in the centre of Stockholm. Will be keeping an eye on the opening dates. Would love to come back.

Excellent place. Very adapted for english speakers with translated documents available for the exhibits. Very friendly and helpful staff! They even charged my phone for me behind the counter (however, this may be as it was quiet at the time, and isn't an explicitly offered service). Bathrooms and lockers are available, the latter of which proved quite helpful to store my many layers of clothing! Only improvement would be the gift shop - a good selection of blankets and soaps and prints are available. However, no museum-branded items like keychains are available (for us tourists who like to show off where we've visited) which was only a small disappointment in an overall postive experience. I highly recommend it as an affordable experience in Stockholm!

They charged us extra for the New Year's Eve event, even if we already had a ticket for earlier that same day. The event was alright, and the restaurant remained open. However, once New Year's Eve arrived, they began closing everything, requiring everyone to leave.

Interestingly, the sign indicating the year was mostly displaying 2023 (at 0hrs it changed but then it went back to 2023— I'm not sure why and didn't get an explanation). On the positive side, it offers a beautiful viewpoint of the city, and the music was good.

When: end of year, after Christmas, during a week day
Who: young adults, without kids

I would not recommend going here. Most houses and markets are closed, lights and music are placed in the most random way and animals placed in cages with should really not be allowed anymore. The price is way too much for what you get. It was definitely a disappointment, but we had a good laugh about it.

I’m sure that for families with kids, in the summer, it is a great attraction.

It feels like 2 different museums. The Viking era wing is absolutely stunning and first class. All exhibits are also in English and have tablets for further exploration, and there are many smaller hands-on exhibits. The rest of the museum feels like an older traditional museum, and although good I found it much less exciting. But the Viking wing alone is worth the price of admission. There is also a cafe on the premises.

For Viking enthusiasts (eager to learn more beyond Netflix dramas), this museum displays rare find treasures and portrays in-depth accounts of Viking life — covering topics including spirituality, trade, settlement patterns, and economic production.

Silver and gold hoards reflecting the extensive connections Vikings had with the British Isles, Ireland, Russia, Islamic Spain and Byzantium underscore how truly global the Vikings were. A rare-find Buddha figurine from Afghanistan/Pakistan, a surprise. Viking swords, carvings, boat hardware and jewelry also abound.

Budget around 1.5 hours to see the full exhibit and read some of the in-depth explanations.

We’ve visited a few museums around Stockholm, and along with the Museum of Wrecks, this has been the best by a long way.
Obviously the ship herself is an incredible thing to be able to see, but all the additional information has been incredibly well presented.
I highly rate the museum.
I had not appreciated the vast amount of detailed work on the ship, which was clearly shown here.
A great day out. Highly recommend this to all.

Amazing museum, can't recommend it high enough. If you're into engineering and building stuff you'll love this place, it has so many details on how the ship was built. All is focused on this ship and its numerous details, the whys and hows and when, the folly and ideas of the old leaders and told with a bit of whimsy. Been there twice already, and will be a mandatory stop when I'm in Stockholm

Absolutely loved the atmosphere. We started around 11 am and could see the entire open air museum in 3 hours. There are many attractions within the museum from zoos, church, farm, and many other activity areas. If it’s a sunny day you will enjoy a lot. There is a decent aquarium called Baltic aquarium.

A unique artistic treasure. A huge puzzle.
It is really interesting to see this ship. And the more amazing is when you realize they pull it out after being underwater for 300 years.
We have to thank the brackishness of the Baltic Sea that helped keep this ship safe all these years.
In this museum, there are side exhibitions related to the events and equipment of this ship, which are unique in their kind. Especially the human skeletons left by passengers.
You can use the human guide in English and Swedish, as well as the audio guidance in several languages, although I have not used it and I have no opinion about its quality.
You can find a store with various goods, a restaurant and places to rest and sit in the museum.
Allow at least 3-4 hours to see it in detail. 😊
Have fun! 😍

The people in the houses were dressed like they were from the old times. They taught us a lot about Sweden's history and how they used to live.

You can also buy cool things and eat outside, which is nice.

I think it would be even better if they showed us how the windmills worked back in the day.

I thought the ticket was a bit pricey, but everything was super clean, especially the bathrooms.

Finally, SkansenIt's a valuable destination for anyone keen on understanding the rich heritage of this fascinating country. It's worth a visit!

Definitely the coolest daytime activity while I was in Stockholm. I had never heard anything about this ship, so learning about its history and getting to see the ship in person was very interesting. I could not believe the amount of detail that went into the wooden art adorning the ship. The museum is laid out well, and the video presentation is a must-see. I recommend watching it before walking the rest of the museum. The harbor outside the museum is also a beautiful spot to see other modern ships and is next to a little park. We spent about an hour and a half there and looked at everything, and watched the video. We bought our tickets at the door with no wait and used a credit card. We went during a weekday around 2pm.

A must visit while in Stockholm if you like history. Although I think even if you are not big into it you would still very much enjoy the unique experience. I don’t think pictures do justice to this place or the incredibly mind blowing story behind the ship.

The museum is incredibly well laid out. I highly recommend doing the guided tour (free and available in different languages) and watching the short documentary available in the museum theatre.

There is restaurant and free locker on premise as well

Wow!!! A must see museum on your visit in Stockholm. We bought the Go City pass and it was easy to use. Plan to spend at least 2-3 hours at this museum. There is a short film, exhibits, and the ship to enjoy. In addition, there was a classical Jazz band playing music as we enjoyed our visit. We visited on a Wednesday, and they were open for extended hours.

This is an interesting historical tourist place in Stockholm, as there are multiple old homes and structures preserved here, a large park to walk, a kids zoo, aquarium (costs extra) and a science museum.

This place is perfect for your kids and they will enjoy it. There is a beautiful traditional market and we were pleased to see the folk dance.

A good place for a family to enjoy a day in stockholm.

Amazing afternoon out. Stunned by the ship, couldn't stop staring at it, trying to imagine it when it was new. I've never seen anything like it anywhere in my life, couldn't get over the size and how elaborately carved and put together it was. Also the food in the cafe is amazing - I couldn't believe it was a museum cafe, I would have been very pleased with that in a restaurant, but I guess many Brits will say the same, cafe's in attraction buildings in the UK are generally not very good at all. But here the food was excellent and reasonable price.
Also price for museum entry was reasonable considering what you are being allowed to see!
Well worth the visit. If you like history or maritime history or are a bit of a geek, or even not, this just can not be missed. It is probably the single best example of an object or thing which is so well preserved, and breathtakingly menacing - that you can't quite believe what you are seeing.
If I ever go to Stockholm again, this will be the first thing I do!!

A very unique museum and a must to see in Stockholm. It's incredible a beautiful ship saved from the mud and resurrected in 1961 and put on display.
The museum is huge so allow at least 3 hours to get around the various floors.
P.S. The ABBA museum is next door.

Fascinating attraction with a plethora of old Swedish buildings, some of which you can look around.

The park also features enclosures with many Swedish animals that are very well designed for their comfort as well as our viewing. We saw many animals that you typically would not see in zoos such as wolverines, brown bears and lynxes.

Also, wandering around the park we saw red squirrels that ate acorns from our hands!

A very charming place to visit. It's really cool that it's one of the oldest open-air museums in the world, and they also have a zoo garden. Important to know, besides the entrance fee, there are certain areas within the zoo garden where you need to pay an additional fee to enter and visit.

I am not a huge fan of museums but this museum is just fantastic. You can learn about the history of this ship, the effort it took to rescue and restore it, the ongoing effort to conserve it for the future and much more. There are info displays everywhere or you can join free tours in English and other languages. You can spend easily 2 hours or more here. The ship is absolutely impressive and huge!

Good museum, entry is free if you have the city pass. You can spend anywhere from 10 minutes to 1.5 hours here depending on how you want to visit. The ship itself is very impressive. There are lots of things to read up on, including details from the ship. There is also a room showing a film about the history of the museum which is really handy if you didn't come with a tour guide. The film is shown in different languages with a timetable outside. There are some really nice things to buy in the gift shop which are reasonably priced for the quality. There are a lot of unisex toilets on site.

One of the loveliest experiences and places in town, although with a bit of mixed feelings when it gets to the lovely animals in captivity.
You can wonder around for hours in this open air museum. The visitable lively houses from various times close at 17, but you can remain in the park for as long as you want.

Very cool concept, especially for families, but I would have expected a bit more for the price.

Having such a big park in a big city is by itself amazing. Then making it an open- air museum dedicated to educating people in a fun way is great. I liked walking around, watching the animals and seeing the unique old houses.

However, it would be nice if you could actually go inside. You CAN go in some of them with dressed up people explaining the history in a playful and fun way. That's great! Only when I was there these were only like 3 houses. Maybe it was just today, but I would have definitely wished for more.

You can see many animals that live in Sweden and I saw lots of families with joyful kids. You can join a tour for further explanations and they have signs with explanations.

I do think 19€ is overpriced for a student price. All in all, I still liked it.

Amazing exhibition with super great views of the Vasa boat. The interactive built around this vessel is truly world class. It includes everything from a life size replica of cabin where crew slept to a steer the ship experience. The way things were highlighted was exceptional and I felt like I learned a lot about the history. Be sure to visit the cute little garden outside, too!

We went on a sunny Sunday afternoon and was surprised that it wasn't as busy as I had expected.
Probably better to go around the working village after 2pm as we found a few places closed we think it was staff lunch time as we saw people in costume arriving as we moved on. Do try the pasties from the bakery as they were some of the best we had in Stockholm.
It's fairly hilly as Skansen is based around the top of a mound. We used the escalator on the left after we entered to get up the steepest part.
We enjoyed seeing the Nordic animals, but felt that the signs to find the enclosures kept giving us false promises as to how far we had to walk. Typical of all Zoo's not all animals could be found in their enclosures.
The old buildings that had been brought to the site were worth looking at but you couldn't go into the majority of them.
There were activities aimed at kids. An afternoon is not long enough to see everything if like us you ramble slowly and stop enjoy the sights. If I was staying longer or lived in Stockholm I would definitely take up the annual ticket.
It is necessary to spare at least 2-3 hours for this museum. I found it to close at 17.00 very early and unfortunately I could only visit it for 1 hour. It is definitely one of the must-see museums in Stockholm. The economy section was closed when I visited, but Viking World was available. The content is very rich and magnificent.

It's very big with a variety of exhibitions, mostly focused on culture and the everyday life of the people in the past living on swedish ground or the north. They have a fantastic collection and exhibition about vikings with lots of material to read or shorter summary's. It very nicely made and curated. You can spend hours there if you want to read everything so make sure you know what you want to see before getting to exhausted and only rushing through stuff at the end.
This is an excellent museum, and once the renovations are complete I am sure it will be even better. The Viking gallery is superb - fully interactive in English and Swedish, each case of exhibits having a screen on which you can read about the context and any of the displayed objects you fancy (or all of them, if they all interest you), so the cases are not clogged up with small labels. It is all well presented in the context of latest research about the Vikings, and afterwards there is the strongroom downstairs containing the collection of medieval gold and silver. Upstairs is still a work in progress, with the Swedish history gallery feeling a little rushed and limited information in English (there were booklets, but these were not all available in the correct place), but I am sure that will be rectified soon. While I have read a lot about the Vikings, I still got a lot from this place, especially seeing the exhibits, and a visit is recommended for this alone. However, as it is very difficult to obtain general books in English about Swedish history, the museum is also definitely recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in this queer subject.
If you're here to learn the history of Stockholm --for free, this is the place! Takes about 45-60 minutes. English text. Free toilets, free lockers. Information and artifacts are very well put together. They also built models of the town so you can really feel like you're going back in time through the streets of Stockholm.

Super cool outdoor museum!
There are old styles of Swedish buildings in a garden and forest type setting. You can go in some of the buildings and see old styles of Swedish furniture and decor.
There are some Scandinavian animals to see as well that are in large forest type enclosures. I’m not a huge fan of zoos or animal preserves but this was enjoyable.
There is a lot of walking involved with getting around the park, most of the park seemed wheelchair accessible. Lots of shade and places to sit as well.
Several restaurants and little gift shops are located inside the park.
Definitely recommend! It’s a unique experience

The park definitely is a fun place to spend a couple of hours. The places gives a real traditional Swedish vibe. The zoo was fun with a variety of animals ranging from Scandinavian reindeers, to monkeys and bears. There even is an aquarium with a variety of fish. The park offers multiple great viewing points as it is placed on a hill. Note that there is an entrance fee.
This is a great museum and it's free. We were blown away at the amount of stuff here. When we learned it was free we figured it would be ok and we would be in and out in a few minutes. We spent about 2 hours inside. Incredibly informative about the history of Stockholm and its just an awesome museum. The remnants and preservation of the old wall was mind blowing. Just to be standing next to something that old is humbling. Definitely check this place out. Giftshop has a lot of good stuff as well. This is a must see.

It was so awesome! A lot of interactive stories and things to touch or interact with, full English translation either directly or via booklet. Audio guide was a bit boring but informative. Spent couple hours there.
Regarding kids in the museum - there is a lot of things to do for kids, special places and outside garden for games.
First of all they have a free entry. I visited this museum on a Sunday. There was no wait time. There was a free guided tour at 2 in English. It was great to know the history and I really liked how people of the city came forward and saved the part of history. They have parts of old city wall. They reconstructed the looks of the old city. It was really nice to see all those things along with the old items found from that era.
My visit to the Medieval Museum in Stockholm was truly captivating. Stepping inside felt like traveling back in time to the medieval era. The museum's exhibits beautifully showcase the rich history and culture of that period. From ancient artifacts to interactive displays, every corner offered a glimpse into the past. The highlight was definitely the reconstructed medieval city, complete with winding streets and authentic buildings. The knowledgeable staff enhanced the experience with their engaging explanations and enthusiasm. If you have an interest in history or simply want to immerse yourself in a bygone era, the Medieval Museum in Stockholm is a must-see. The museum is free for visitors.
A great museum that’s also great for kids. A very cool display of historical items incorporated into an actual archaeological site. Recreated medieval structures blend with unearthed walls and relics. Lots of interactive pieces and plenty of space for roaming and exploring. Very educational and great signage.
