One of my favorite parks in San Diego! Beautiful little playground, clean (flushable) public bathrooms, rinse showers, lifeguard, and La Jolla Shores is a great beach. Oh, and a free parking lot! Get there early though for parking. My favorite time is 7am; get set up in the park or on the beach, and leave by 1pm when it’s hot. Kids love Kellogg Park! Places to eat within walking distance if you don’t pack any food to bring. Some picnic tables at the park, or bring blankets. Dog friendly, although we always leave ours at home. We’ve been going to this park for over 25 yrs. Also love seeing the surfers on the water from the park.
A great place to just sit and enjoy the Pacific Ocean.
This is not an easily accessible spot. The steps are great but can be a bit tricky. It is beautiful beach but large rock formations. Also not equipped for wheelchairs.

We were there for memorial Day, Park was very nice, and clean, lots of restrooms, great to walk around, it's has sand for people who love the sandy area and grass for those who love grass, if you're barbecuing or on a family outing lots of space between tables. I loved it and enjoyed it. Great for families !!!

We just stopped by along our trip down the coast. Big large beach. Shower and restrooms spot. Many people and surfers. Nice.
Parking is very hard to find and there are no restrooms. This is still a nice place to visit.
It's small, but wonderful. Our youngest loved the penguins, and I loved the leopard sharks. It's rare to have such a great time that is also educational

Overall, small aquarium with great ocean views and a collection of different sea creatures. It costs about $25 for adults and may get discounts for children and over 65 years of age. Suggest checking online for the latest prices and schedule.
Had a great time here. Aquarium is well kept and some great local sea creatures to be seen. We didn’t have kids but there were lots running around having a blast.
Ran down for a quick Bioluminescence hunt, and found some. Don't mind the green light, it's not an alien, someone had a drone out there 🤣. Also, pictures are a bit grainy due to the mist from the ocean air.
The exhibits here are excellent and great educationally, but not overwhelming. I didn't go to learn about marine life, but I did learn a lot and loved it. Very interesting way to spend a couple of hours.
A bit smaller than I anticipated, and the weather didn't allow for the tidal ponds to be "open" (pouring rain), but they did bring some of the interactive experiences inside to see. I would recommend going in the afternoon so you'll miss the school field trips. Overall, it was still a great experience!
Great hiking and climbing area for the adventurous family.
For us, this was a happen stance. And it just happened to be at sunset that we drove by and stopped. A few limited 2 hour parking spaces were available when we got there. There's a very diverse ecosystem in the tide pools. I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon this beach. We also had the chance to witness a true So Cal sunset. We spent about 30 minutes here.
Second time we have been there. Really easy to hang out. Restaurant section is nice

Kids have been there with several times. Great little aquarium.
I was more impressed with the staff. My son gets excited about any kind of animals, and will talk excessively about it with staff. They were super kind to him and engaged a lot with him.
My youngest daughter is mischievous and is a cute little girl with Down Syndrome. She loves to run off if you look away from her and actively will try to hide. Terrifying game for a parent. She slipped away while I was there and within a few minutes I realized I was going to have a very difficult time finding her. The staff was AMAZING. I asked for help, so they called over the radio. Within 30 seconds, at least 15 staff members came streaming out of what I assumed was a break room. They had found my daughter within 3-4 minutes! I cannot thank them enough!

I didn’t purchase tickets online and it cost me $15 at the gate for a daily pass. I went on a Monday morning and there were plenty of parking spaces once inside the gate. All of the trails are pretty short and moderate. My favorite one was the Razor Point trail. Great views of the cliff side and a nice 180 degree view of the shore. The Parry Grove trail was also a good one. Spent about 2 hours in the park and was able to do most of the shorter trails. Beautiful blue water down here compared to LA.
Beautiful beach. Used to come here wen I was a kid w my grandpa, hasn't changed much at all. Just alot more busier. Water is Chrystal clear. There r tide pools to check out. U can rent kayaks, or go paddleboarding to the caves. There r an abundance amount of sea lions, n birds.

We had a short one hour visit to the Birch Aquarium, which was very successful, AND FUN!!!
It started for us with getting a great disabled parking spot. If it wasn't for those parking spots, it would be difficult to visit the place.

We then inside and saw seahorses and other creatures. We then went outside and saw sharks and penguins.

Very crowded on a Saturday morning but the crowds really dissipate after lunch. Recommend driving to the top of the mountain and then hiking around but you can do either - park at the bottom, hike up and back down (to the ocean) and back to your car OR just park at the top by the vision center and do quick hikes down and back up. We ended up going on almost all the trails and it's not terribly strenuous, there's mild elevation. I think the hardest part is sun coverage / shade after a while so bring sunscreen and a hat! We used a free/borrowed Public Library state pass.

Great spot to watch the sunset. Be careful, the rocks can be slippery and beware of high tides.
This was a fun little day hike. Ended up walking 2.8 miles through some trails a few hills and then brought you down to the beach. Where are you finished a hike back to the parking area.

This is a fantastic museum with beautiful views. I enjoyed staying on the terrace and watching the sea and sky.

The architectural design is fascinating, especially the window facing the sea that frames the natural scenery adjacent to the museum—I thoroughly enjoyed that space (perhaps part of an exhibition?).
The staff is friendly and willing to assist.

learned allot about that amazing turtle Apparently they fixed her broken shell. They have been caring for her for many years. Turtle was the best part for me. The tide pools were in repair so we did not get to see that part. Kids would especially love this!
Great density, great hands on exhibits for kids, great summary of local shark behavioral research and many fish. However, no info on birds or shore botany, little on invertebrates, none on seaweed, and an inexplicably huge volume on seahorses and sea dragons. Would have loved to see film of different places nearby underwater, maybe some more microscopy and geology.

Pines for the right reason. This hike was breathtaking and was so beautiful. I did the most easiest trail walk and it has some good views of the sand and sea.We did met a guide and she was so good at her work in educating travelers about the place. You can actually take guided tours. Must go place for some breath taking views.
A nice place for sunset and do some family hikes. Most of the trails are not shaded, recommended to hike early morning. Restroom is at the trailhead by the parking. Parking is $10 in the parking lot, and free parking on the street
we had previously purchased our tickets online which was a good idea because there was a line to buy tickets we noticed when we arrived. we visited on a somewhat sprinkling and rainy day so there wasn't too much action going on in the outside tanks and displays and most people were walking through the displays and exhibits inside. fyi, this aquarium is extremely small but drink worth the visit as you can easily kill an hour or two looking around. we were able to touch and see some small animals when outside but because of the weather they had to pack up shortly after. i enjoyed the shark tank and we were lucky to have made it on time for when they feed them so that was interesting to watch.
I absolutely love this beach! From dolphins to the occasional seal, this beach has everything you would want. Parking is plentiful especially if you get there early. The state park has lots of parking on both side of the highway as well. It's a beautiful place to watch the sunset and swim or surf. If you walk south along the ocean, you will eventually come to Blacks Beach. It's a beautiful beach hike. If you like rocks, there are a variety of rocks, that get washed up every day.

Free parking on street nearby. Great views of the ocean. It only has 3 floors and not many galleries. Only took me 40mins.
It’s just gorgeous! The view is stunning! I think it’s the best state park in CA. The guided tour is a must have if you are first time visitor. We really enjoyed the two-hour ( it’s supposed to be one hour) tour guided by Gary. He’s so knowledgeable and made the tour such a pleasure. This park is a pure gem which is so special and unique in Southern California. It recalls me of those beautiful coastal areas in Northern California. It’s a must go in Southern California.
Really nice natural reserve! Pretty busy on a Sunday morning but worth it for sure. We did the beach loop trail and walked from the north beach lot. It was around 4 miles and moderate difficulty. The views from the top are really wonderful and the terrain is cool. We went to yucca pt at the top and the view is beautiful. The cliffs along the beach on the way back are also really beautiful. We did see small debris falling so stay aware.
Great maps from a collector. This museum will be closing soon. The lease wasn't renewed.

Reviewing after my second time here. It's a small aquarium, but there are a lot of exhibits and displays. I recommend going at opening to avoid the larger crowds. I would plan to spend about 2 hours to explore the aquarium. There's daily penguin feeding at 10:00 and then fish feeding and diver interaction in the large tank at 10:30. There's staff all around the aquarium to answer questions. The touching exhibits are always fun. I have a membership, which I think is worth it since I plan to come several more times, especially when I can get first look at special events.
Birch Aquarium is a fun experience overall. There are a great assortment of marine wildlife here, and all of them look like they are extremely well taken care of in overall gorgeous exhibits and enclosures. The large kelp forest enclosures, the shark feeding tank, and the relatively new little blue penguin exhibit our major highlights. Sidenote, the gift shop is phenomenal and has an amazing variety of great gifts, with most of them being fairly reasonable in price. The employees were all wonderful as well.
On that note of price however, I cannot stress enough that the aquarium charge is far too much for what is offered here. Even with the great variety of wildlife here, this aquarium is fairly small and if it weren’t for the discount coupon I had, I would only have been willing to pay about half of what is currently being charged for admission right now. It didn’t help matters either that there were several prominent animals that were currently off display, with no notices as to what their status was or where they had been relocated to; not being able to see the sea turtle was a bummer, to say the least. There is also a reservation system in place, which seems to have mixed results in efficiency. The aquarium is frequently way below capacity and still requires reservations to be placed for several hours later. This could be adjusted to be more effective while still maintaining optimal crowd levels.
Overall, this is a fun aquarium with some great exhibit and things to see, and his child friendly as well. However, unless you end up getting some kind of discount or Groupon, the cost is not worth what you get.

Beautifully set in La Jolla beach shoreline with viewing area to shore. All art very intriguing and done by artists from SoCal and Mexico.

Beautiful art museum on the gorgeous Southern California coastline. Small enough to enjoy in a couple of hours, but can easily spend more time if desired. A perfect place to spend the afternoon.
Very cute and interactive area for kids to enjoy. My 20month old loved the aquarium - way better than any zoo- simply because the fish are all there in action.. instead of some little spot who knows where looking like a monkey.. over all love this place. Parking was a bit tight..

Such a pretty area and a really nice beach and park. We went on a day of a surfing competition so it was pretty busy. Really nice beach to go check out!

We parked our car just before the north beach parking lot and got one of the few coveted free parking spots near the beach. Highly recommend visiting on a weekday and getting there a bit early if you want to avoid paying the 20$ parking fee.
The hike itself is very easy... With a gradual gradient. There are plenty of trails branching off from the main road that take you to some of the most beautiful overlooks I've seen. Really loved the hike that took us to Red Butte... Yucca Point and the beach.
We hiked on a super cloudy day but it still it did get quite warm during some parts of the hike. So I recommend carrying plenty of water and making sure you're hydrated. And slather on a generous amount of sun screen as well... Even if it's cloudy. Because you will be exposed to all the elements throughout the hike.

And slather on a generous amount of sun screen as well... Even if it's cloudy. Because you will be exposed to all the elements throughout the hike.
Love this museum! Even better since they remodeled it. Such an incredible selection of contemporary art. A must on your places to visit if in San Diego and love art.
I haven't been to a tidepool in years, over a decade. I felt like a little kid seeing all the crabs, hermit crabs, all the snails and the very boopable little anemones.

Great museum.... The location is amazing right on the beach. The architecture of the building is just really comfortable to walk around. Plenty of space and they did a great job making the museum itself very relaxing. The special exhibit was well curated and their work displayed really nicely. The museum is small and you can tour it in an hour, or make it take all day. There are three floors and plenty of art to take in. There are also balconies you can walk out on that have great ocean views, and the canoe sculpture attached to the back of the museum is really cool. The price of admission is $25 for adults, a little pricey but not disappointing, with every penny.
This was the highlight of my trip to San Diego! You can see seals, sea lions, walk along the coast and dip your toes into the ocean. Make sure LA Jolla is part of your San Diego plans. Don't miss it.

Best views in La Jolla! Steep at the beginning, then a bit of an uphill for quite a ways, but remember to turn around periodically! Trailhead is right past the bridge on Al Bahr. Or you can skip the climb and drive straight to the top on Brodiaea, but what fun is that?
Wonderful museum, lots of historic maps and history surrounding them. Recommend to any historian, GIS nerd or cartographer!
Modern and contemporary art fans will be in heaven. When you enter the first gallery you’re greeted by Ellsworth Kelly’s Red Blue Green and large white cubes by Sol LeWitt. A small yellow Rothko nonchalantly on a back wall to an epic California coast windowed room with a Warhol Flowers & Roy Lichtenstein donning the walls. The must see is Robert Irwin’s windows. Simple, spectacular, never seen anything like it before.

Beautiful sunset spot and a great place to go tidepooling. I was blown away by the sheer scale of the tide pool area, especially compared to some places in Hawaii. Be careful walking around though, as it can get very slippery!
One of my favorite beaches. Gets great waves too. You'll need to get here early during the summer to avoid paying for parking. Additionally, there is free street parking off Carmel Valley Road but it's further of a walk.
Great place to go for a walk and see some marine life. Lots of crustaceans and mollusks. It’s very relaxing to watch the tides and examine the life in the pools. Watch your steps, as it can be a bit slippery.
Steep and challenging hike. From westbound Torrey Pines Rd, turn left on Exchange and turn right on Al Bahr Drive. Go under a bridge and the trail will be on the left. Trail is only a half mile long, starts about 250 feet in elevation and gets to over 600 at the top. Many side trails have incredible views. It puts you on the edge of a gated, private residential neighborhood. It's easier to use Country Club Rd. to get back down.
One of San Diego's best beaches to catch a sunset. The beach is also perfect for a walk. You can walk on the beach south all the way to La Jolla shores or north up to Del Mar Beach. Parking is right on the beach if you're lucky. Although, motorcycle parking near the reserve entrance is always available. Gets a little crowded, but well worth the views.
Excellent museum for people who are into old maps and navigation. Each map is accompanied by a detailed description including the date. Admission is free!
Such a beautiful beach. Great trails. Perfect for a quick hike. You have to be careful, they are right of the cliffs. There are man made steps going down to the beach from the cliff. Beautiful view, especially close to sunset.
My husband's and I first visit to San Diego and this beach was out first stop, very beautiful. So many rocks and shells, scenic views and a trail we were not prepared for. Overall very clean, peaceful and relaxing.

Historical maps from an extraordinary private collection. A must for history buffs and cartophiles! Extremely pleasant afternoon, from the lovely gal who manages the collection to the chamber music playing in the background as we made our way through time and place in this fascinating spot on the lower level of a large office building . Entry is FREE. Parking can be difficult in beautiful downtown La Jolla, so be patient.
One of the best beeches to visit. parking is difficult. lots of life, sun surf and sand. everything is picture esk.
Great little hike. Very steep at the onset, but then very moderate up to the top. Continue past the tower and across the pavement to the top. Beautiful views overlooking La Jolla and the ocean, Torrey Pines to the north. Up down in about an hour to two hours depending on pace. We do this hike often with our 6/4 year olds.
Hidden gem above the noise and traffic on Torrey Pines Road overlooking the La Jolla Cove. Unpaved path leading to the top of a hill with wonderful view to the north. On clear days you get to see the mountain ranges north of Los Angeles in the Angeles National Forest.
Short hike with gorgeous views. Paths are relatively narrow. Dogs allowed on leash and if you clean up after them. Convenient if you live nearby (or have a friend who lives nearby). Difficult to find parking if you don’t live in the neighborhood.
1.2mi hike up and back (about 45min). Beautiful views. Should follow AllTrails direction and park near Al Bahr Drive then hike up.
What a cool museum! Loads of old and interesting maps from all over the world, spanning several thousand years (though most of the maps are from 15th century onwards). Did you know that California was long thought to be an island?

Disappointing. They should advertise it as history of architecture in La Jolla.
A piece of history preserved , Wisteria Cottage. I was there on Sunday Looking for figs to pick on the fig tree in front.
Fantastic collection of historic maps on display for free. Staff was very nice and helpful; they are available to answer questions for you, but otherwise encourage you to take your time exploring the displays with a magnifying glass. It's amazing what these maps say about the time they were created. The museum's cronologic organization means you can observe things like the discovery of The Americas happen through the lens of maps! Too cool. There are also some interesting maps from the 20th century on display, including a map of Disneyland from the 1950s. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area.
My son and I went here for a school project. I have to admit it is a secret gem in La Jolla. A private collector kind enough to share his historic, one of a kind collection and show anyone interested in how the earth was found and mapped.

This place is a little gem in the center of La Jolla Village! It is the restored guest house that was owed by Ellen Browning Scripps and given to the La Jolla Historical Society by her famiy. Fully restored...the interior is a museum grade display facility with very wonderful presentations on the history of the local area
This place is amazing. First off, admission is free! They have maps on display going back to the late 1400s. The Museum is laid out in themes and geographic regions, including Colonization, California is an Island, Africa, Europe, Asia, world atlases, and The Holy Land. They also offer magnifying glasses so you can better see the detail on these maps. Each map is also complemented by captions that explain the significance of the map, how it was created, and why. The Museum also has a handful of objects, like a waywiser and and astroblabe.
I chatted with the Museum Director and Assistant Director during my visit, and they are very knowledgeable.
If you live in the area, this Museum is a must. We made a special trip from Phoenix, and it was totally worth it.
