It was interesting seeing the statue of James Joyce in Trieste. I even took photos with "him". :)

Unbelieveable that there's anything remaining from this amphitheater considering it was built in 1st Century. There must of been some real life or death entertainment in those days

Short 12 minute walk from our B&B. Neat to see from above. The ground level is completely surrounded by construction walls so we didn't bother with the lower view. Wish we could access it better to explore more closely.

A museum housed in a villa, offering art from the 18th and 19th century, in the middle of the city. The garden is also beautiful and adds to the charm.

Piazza Bellissima, spaziosa e veramente pulita ed ordinata

Toller Platz 👍👍

Although it is free, I am giving 4 stars. It is interesting, rooms are differently decorated, there are 2 specific rooms with paintings and drawings by Tiepilo and Fitty ( I think that is the name) on last floor, but I think one floor was closed or maybe I missed the part with icons which I really wanted to see.

Great museum, super interesting

Piazza verdi is famous for the summer because there are many outdoor street performers come and perform

James Joyce - the amazing Irish writer - called Trieste home for many years in the early 20th century
A statue celebrating his connection with the city overlooks the main canal

Just perusing the Google pages of the area, I fully can see why Joyce found the city a place to call "home"

Super

Is one of the statues dedicated to famous people that lived in Trieste and this one is of the incredible irish writer James Joyce! Really amazing u can take a selfie with him!

Loved this place. There's a lot to see including a very fine picture collection. Better than Revoltella and for some unclear reason it's free 😁

Empfehlenswert!

This little gem opens once a week, so make sure to plan your visit in advance. It’s absolutely worth a visit, because it offers a glimpse on how interiors were. The furniture is stunning, all original and wonderfully kept. And the colors, oh the colors of such a jewel.

Very beautiful Roman ruins of a theatre in the heart of Trieste. It has been very well preserved and as I understand, it’s still under construction excavation. As there’s still more to be worked on and discovered. It’s a lovely part of town with lots to do and see in and around the area. I would definitely recommend checking it out.

If you like see houses associated with famous writers, e.g. Joyce in Trieste, his wife Nora Barnacle in Galway, or Lawrence Durrell in Cyprus, go. When you get there it’s pretty meh..

We stumbled across this Roman Theatre on our way from a parking garage. Not 1 person was paying attention and we felt a bit weird standing on the street and photographing it but it’s totally awesome. Very well preserved 👏

Pretty, but I wish there was a small museum attached where I could learn more of the history and it was all locked up when I was there so I could only view it from the sidewalk and park.

When I'm in Trieste and I go over the Ponte Rosso, I often stop by the statue of Jamsa Joyce. Near here, my relatives often shopped in the 1970s and 1980s. Nice memories of Trieste.

A tiny little museum dedicated to Joyce and his close friend, Italian writer Svevo. The highlight was chatting with the docent, who is a native of Trieste who lives many years in the States. She was knowledgeable and friendly.

Free, beautiful and well preserved with interesting signs hung up (paper and laminated) to explain the excavation

Breathtaking impression - it is 1st century BC or older - so it is Roman Republic times, long before Rome became an Empire. It feels like on a date with Chronos. Neckless Time...

Beautiful collection of art that belonged to the family. Lovely old house and so well taken care of.

Nice quiet place with a sunny terrace and good coffee in the city center, close to the James Joyce statue

Nice small square with historical buildings - Giuseppe Verdi Opera House and Palazzo Targesteo with interesting shopping gallery with glass ceiling inside.
Also, there is an Illy shop with bug variety of famous Trieste coffee brand.

Nice "old school" museum about Joyce's stay in Triest.

This theater was built almost 2000 years ago, but it was recognized under the ground only in 1938. When you visit Trieste you must see this historical place. It is an amazing building and you don't need to pay for walking there. 10 minutes walking from the main square

Impressive ancient Roman ruins that has been carefully wardened off and preserved.
The ruins are right on the edge of the main street and can be easily accessed for good viewing.

Small museum with a few exhibits of documentary materials in two rooms (one dedicated to Svevo) within the municipal archives building. Care has gone into the display but probably only of interest to real Joyce fanatics.

Nice Piazza in front of the Theater, and close to the main square of Trieste."Piazza Unità"

Nice little museum in the heart of Trieste. Entrance is free. One room in the museum is dedicated to Italo Svevo, one room to James Joyce and two further rooms to Francesco Petrarca and Enea Silvio Piccolomini. It's nothing extraordinary, but the museum includes informative Videos and the staff gave me further information on the subjects, including a free little guided tour on Petrarca, which was very interesting and extraordinarily professional. Furthermore, the museum offers free leaflets with thematic city itineraries, for example with places important in the lives of Svevo or Joyce, or with the city's architectonic highlights. I recommend a visit...

Walking over the Ponte Rosso bridge over the Canal Grande we encounter an interesting statue. This beautiful statue is devoted to James Joyce (a famous Irish writer), made by sculptor from Trieste Nino Spagnoli. The statue was placed on the bridge in 2004 to remember the centenary of Joyce's arrival in Trieste. James Joyce in Trieste is coming to work like an English teacher at the Berlitz School. James Joyce along with girlfriend Nora Barnacle ( He married her in 1931), reaches Trieste and finds that the place in the scool is not free. They ( the institute for the foreign languages ) send him to Pula on the south of the Istrian peninsula to teach english language, where he lives in bad conditions days and finally returns to Trieste in 1905. Returning to Trieste in the Berlitz school, begins one of the most fruitful periods for his literary production. During his stay in the city, Joyce completes the collection of short stories "Dubliners", publishes a second draft of the collection of poems "Chamber Music", and starts, in addition to the "Exiles" drama, the work that will give international fame:" Ulysses".

A tiny museum with the simply told history of Joyce's relationship of a city he came to as a young man when it was still an Austrian port and left almost 20 years later when it was in Republica Italia. His family and major works were born here. Worth a visit.

Fabulous original collection on three levels in a fantastic home museum. Entry by donation. Highly recommend. Easily spend 2 hours here. Don’t need a guide as previously suggested by another reviewer.

Sadly, this was not a museum.
This place is more like an office, organizing the annual Bloomsday, and giving a lecture to the small audience.
I went all the way to trace James Joyce, but was terribly disappointed.
It is great to have a place like this to remember and honor Joyce, but please don't call it a museum. People get a wrong expectation.

Ancient Roman theater built 2000 years ago. It was very surprising to find it when walking along just an ordinary street in the city. It's located near the Trieste City Hall.
Interesting that in those ancient times, the theater was located near the sea which reached this area at that time.
And it was opened only in 1930s during city restoration works (previously it was hidden under city buildings for centuries).

A bit of a disapointment. Thinking it was a small museum it is actually a study centre. You need to understand a good deal of Italian to be able to appreciate it. Admission is free. There is a video (in Italian and English) about the life of Joyce in Trieste and his encounters with Italo Svevo. It is situated on the second floor.

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) was an Irish novelist, short story writer, and poet. He contributed to the modernist avant-garde and is regarded as one of the most influential and important authors of the 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses (1922), a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in a variety of literary styles, perhaps most prominently stream of consciousness. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). His other writings include three books of poetry, a play, his published letters and occasional journalism.
Joyce was born in 41 Brighton Square, Rathgar, Dublin, into a middle-class family on the way down. A brilliant student, he briefly attended the Christian Brothers-run O'Connell School before excelling at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, despite the chaotic family life imposed by his father's alcoholism and unpredictable finances. He went on to attend University College Dublin.
In 1904, in his early twenties, Joyce emigrated permanently to continental Europe with his partner (and later wife) Nora Barnacle. They lived in Trieste, Paris and Zurich. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce's fictional universe centres on Dublin, and is populated largely by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies and friends from his time there. Ulysses in particular is set with precision in the streets and alleyways of the city. Shortly after the publication of Ulysses, he elucidated this preoccupation somewhat, saying, "For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal."
