Yesterday evening we stopped by to drink coffee during a roadtrip. Very kind receptionist and bartender. And a very luxurious interior design! Thanks you for the hospitality!
the reception is totally unhelpful. when my daughter broke a glass in the room at 9:30 p.m., I heard at the reception that there was no one to vacuum it and they didn't have a vacuum cleaner so I could clean it myself. when I insisted that I had a small child who would run on the glass, I was told to go to the bar and ask for a brush and a dustpan. no one vacuumed it for two days. I ended up with a small piece of glass embedded in my foot.

breakfast is a misunderstanding . The moldy clementines lay there for two days. breakfast was served until 9:30 am but from 8:45 there were no scrambled eggs, croissants or rolls. When I asked if they would add a new portion, I always heard "it's already over."
.

parking is another misunderstanding. two minutes away from hotel but if you have a SUV or roof box you will have problem to park. reception advised to park on the street and buy a parking ticket every 90 min. Seriously?
Wandered into this beautiful jewel-box of a bar on the way back to my hotel. Had passed the Essener Hotel many times, but the unassuming facade didn't speak to me.

For whatever reason, I decided to pop in after a stroll through the Christmas Markets (just a few steps away). What a nice surprise: a beautiful, clean and Art-Deco stylish hotel. It was an unexpected oasis.

Even more surprising was the bar with its clean architecture, great christmas sound track and all the classic cocktails.

Finally, the Bartender - Dennis - was a wonderful host. It never ceases to amaze me how, after traveling the world for years, the best experiences are those surprises you didn't plan.
Hi Holiday Inn Essen City Centre TEAM,

Well, if you really want the details - for one thing, the windows in the rooms are so airy that the curtains move, and we were at your place in winter, so it's not surprising that it wasn't particulary pleasant, and on top of that the tiny duvets made it impossible to ignore the cold. And the AC wasn't working in my room, so I couldn't help myself with extra heating either (and the regular radiator in the room mainly heats the desk it's tucked under). The lack of even one bottle of water in the room is also strange to me. Everything else (restaurant, bar, service etc. is fine, but you know- the room makes the most of the impression).
Located directly across from the train station in Essen this hotel is clean with some recently renovated rooms. The staff are friendly and informative. On the down side I bought a small bottle of water to bring to my room and it cost €8.50, this is a rip off.

Ganz solide.

In general, we had a nice stay. Only unpleasant moment was breakfast time. Compare to the number of room, breakfast saloon is very small. Long queue for a coffee (front of ONLY ONE coffee machine). There is not enough place to sit and get breakfast. It might be as a reason of peak season (Christmas time). However, it was still unpleasant moment.
Very nice hotel with character. Very clean and well organised. Amazing cookies at reception.
We didn’t go for breakfast which could be great but it was 19€ per person. Overall happy to come back to this hotel.

My stay at Motel One in Essen was a mixed experience. The hotel rooms maintained their standard of comfort and tidiness, ensuring a pleasant stay. Location was the best you can get in the city with a garage right next to the hotel. The breakfast offered was good, and the staff at both the reception and during breakfast were exceptionally friendly.

However, the bar experience was disappointing. The bar manager displayed disrespectful and unprofessional behavior on two consecutive nights. Despite ordering drinks and being present for a mere 40 minutes with two companions, we were told to order more drinks or leave to prevent the hotel from losing money. This interaction prompted a complaint to the manager, as such behavior is a disgrace to the hotel chain's reputation. While most aspects of Motel One were commendable, the bar's unprofessionalism left a lasting negative impression.
Very clean hotel with friendly staff. perfect location, just 2 mins walk from the train station and the city center/Christmas market. There was enough space in our room, stayed there 4 people (with 2 kids). They are also pet friendly, prepped a very nice spot in the room for our dog as well. Very low price compared to it's standards.
Had a great stay. Services were good rooms were comfortable as well. Liked the grandeur art and lobby area. Staff was exceptional in hospitality.
Beautiful and well kept hotel, staff were friendly.
Two minute walk from the train station, excellent location for the Christmas markets. The room was of a high standard and reasonably priced.
That was absolutely one of the best hotel I've ever been! My room was fantastic, clean, with huge windows and the toilet, was absolutely high class. The breakfast was just AMAZING.

Rooms we got were a bit outdated but bathrooms were fairly new. The heater was rather noisy but had to keep it on because temperature was chilly (it's Autumn!). Great location to access Philharmonie tram/train station just in front of the hotel. Also a good walking distance to Essen hbf.

Breakfast was okay, nothing special compared with other Marriott hotels we stayed in, but cannot complain because it fuelled us just as well. And the park at the back with a water jet/fountain was a sight to behold. Reminded my kids of Jet d'Eau in Geneva, only smaller.

Service was fantastic. We don't speak German so we're delighted that the receptionists speak English so well. Big up to Xin Wang and Kieleran (?) for the patience in answering our questions every time. Thank you!
!!A TERRIBLE STORY!!
We tried to log in to this hotel, which we had booked and paid for 1-2 months in advance, with the password given to us on the first day we arrived, but we could not log in. When we called the number written on the door, he said that he could not help us because there was no reception and that we should stay at another hotel. For the first night, 4 of us had to pay money to another hotel and stay there. On the second day, we went and got our room cards in the morning, then when we came to sleep in the evening, when I opened the door of my room, I saw that other people were staying. Again, like the previous evening, he said that he could not help us because there was no reception and that we should stay in another hotel. We had to go to another hotel again. The cost of the hotel victimizing us without any response to this situation, which was a complete nonsense, was very high in terms of financial and fatigue. The hotel itself is quite old and the beds are small and uncomfortable. Actually, it's not even a bed because what I'm lying on is worse than the stretchers in the hospital. In order to run a hotel business, certain standards must be met. I DEFINITELY DON’T RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL TO ANYONE.
We were about to visit Essen this last Spiel, so we booked our trip with plenty of time, almost a year before. Then, literally less than a week before we arrived, the hotel cancelled our reservation without any further reason. We guess it is as we booked a long ago and, therefore, our reservation was cheaper than accepting a new reservation that could easily be twice or three times the money we were about to pay. Just a shameful and deplorable handling. We had to look for another place to stay which cost us a lot more.

Good choice of hotel due to its proximity to the main station. The room was basic, but neat and tidy. Service was overall good as well.
Of note, I particularly liked the breakfast for its fruit selection and the option of warm dishes like scrambled eggs and sausages.
I wish the hotel had offered a bit more on the service side though, for example only basic soap shampoo was available and even upon request, there was no conditioner.
It is my second time to stay this hotel. Nice location, nice people and nice service. But My favourite is to see these creative drawings on eggs every morning when I go for breakfast. The most interesting is every day drawings are different, it looks like eggs know people's feeling on each day. I love it. Thanks to the creator for bringing me the unique experience. Have a nice day

Ort einer Schulung. Alles perfekt organisiert.
Super, comfortable and Great location next to the subway.

The room was adequate but not excellent. The staff were nice but their English was poor.
The rainfall shower was completely waterlogged and leaked heavily in several places.
The service is slow. It took up to 30 minutes between meals as we were eating from a pre-ordered menu.
The lift and wifi is slow.
The hotel has its own rules which are more inconvenient for guests. A particular drink could only be consumed in that particular place, not in other places, the staff told you so.
Breakfast is the same every day, a bit boring after the second day.
Electric appliances cannot be charged when you are not in the room.
So I drove to Germany and stayed in Essen in early August 2023. As an IHG Platinum Member, most of the time I stay in IHG hotels only, but this hotel wasn't exactly what I was expecting.

The service from staff is great and the barman and front desk staff were wonderful and very friendly. I had a very nice chat with both chaps and they gave me information of where to visit in Germany.

Parking is okay but its very narrow underground car park so you have to be very careful driving in and out of the car park especially when driving a UK car in Europe. The hotel charge a lot for parking therefore I hope they reduce the costs as its pricey.

I tried the gym and sauna and it was nice to have all to myself which was great albeit it was outdated. The location of the hotel is close to the heart of the city centre.

Heres the disappointing part, the rooms are ancient and out of date. The rooms are dull and not that good including the quality of the bed. For the price of the hotel, they should at least modernise the rooms and bring it up to 21st century standards.

Also, when walking down the stairwell during the night, the hotel is cutting corners and risking people's safety by not leaving the lights on. I was scared that I would fall down the stairs as it was dark and there was no light switch or automated sensor to turn the lights on. I had to use my phone as a torch to see where I was going. That's very dangerous!

Everything is else was okay.
Good location - 20 minutes walk from the Messe. Good breakfast. Rooms pretty dark without central light.
Well appointed hotel with good access to town and plenty of parking.

The rooms are well decorated and equipped, with very comfortable beds and a lovely bathroom.

The room had air conditioning and plenty of room for yoga!

The hotel overall is very quiet and has a very relaxing feel.

There is parking underground with direct access to the hotel.

The centre of town is a 10 minute walk and behind the hotel is a pleasant park with a lake, great for running.

Breakfast was good with plenty of choice
I was staying at the hotel few nights. Rooms are clean, personel very friendly but the location isnt the best one at all. Near the main station, lot of homeless people, drunks on the street etc. Screaming during the night… I know thats not a problem of the hotel, but overall it take a review down.

Easy to reach in the city center. Multi level park just in front. Breakfast really good
My room was good, had huge windows with a decent view over the many trees lining the road out front. Free breakfast buffet that has a cool robot moving from table to table gathering dishes. The lady working the dining area was lovely, very friendly and helpful. All the staff I interacted with were nice, and the receptionists spoke good English. I arrived late after reception closed but rang beforehand and was given clear instructions on how to access my room, had no trouble.

My room was quiet for four of the five nights I stayed, but the people in the next room on the fifth night were noisy enough to hear. The road out front is also quite noisy until 11-12 at night. Otherwise, I had a perfect stay here, no complaints. I love the pond and planted area out back. This hotel was excellent value for money. I recommend it and will stay here again next time I visit the area.
Nice hotel, very close to the city center and the train station. My room was clean, nice and my stay there was a pleasure. Also the breakfast was delicious.
Very nice hotel with a history.
My room was large and very clean. The price is great for everything you get.
The employees were nice and friendly.
Thanks for this nice stay !

No air conditioning in the room and no signal for phones so could only use hotel wifi. Beds were ok but on the second day there was no hot water and couldn’t take a shower. There was a hole in the ceiling of the corridor and water was leaking.

Beautiful hotel, huge. Has pool and bar. The only complaint is that rooms too warm, no air conditioning.
Hotel is nice enough with a very spacious room which was clean. Only marking room down because of very dated bathroom which had a broken toilet seat and towels that felt like they had seen better days.

Hotels saving grace is the breakfast and it’s staff. The breakfast spread was immense and the kitchen staff going the extra mile to put faces on the boiled eggs.
One of the worst hotels I stayed in, period!
Didn’t book it myself and never will
Great hospitality, cleanliness and tidy. Close to city center and critical points. 10min max to Hauptbahnhof. You can find nice steakhouses either.Breakfast has quality.
Especially One Bar is so nice to meet up and have nice Gin Coctails. Service by Nadine and Burak was great ! Thanks.
Below average IHG Brand with nothing special, the rooms were similar to a cheap hotel compared to any IHG brand. The heaters were not functional, bathroom was very old and not maintained, the shower was not working fine, with hot/cold combination not working properly. The body-wash was missing and instead 2 shampoos in the shower.

No recognition for Platinum membership and a very cold welcome at reception, which was very surprising for an IHG brand.

The cleaning lady just walks into your room after 1 knock and without waiting for response at 09:00 am.

In summary never had a terrible experience like this with any IHG brands before.

Excellent very large room, bath with tub and bidet, water in the room.. really lined it. Interiors quite dated but the room size, couple with the fact of large windows overlooking dense green trees, this is a 5 star review
Best location ever literally in the park with Aalto theater contrasts with visible age of the hotel and low upkeep efforts.

Excellent and well educated staff.

Empty shampoo/showergel on arrival took a while to resolve.
I consider the breakfast to be horribly bad. Many buffets items where offered in minuscule cups with small teaspoons - not to take with you, but to laborously shovel a few gramms on your plate. You might think you are in a seminar on homeopathy and not on a buffet offering some olives and veggies.

Ah, and they ran out of most of the bread buffet a good hour before the end, resorting to cut bread and heated up frozen croissants.

The rest fit the picture, one thing that stuck to my mind were the processed juices from a vending-machine-like contraption.

In general, the entire breakfast screamed "cost-saving" at me.

Running a hotel that in many ways is still living in the .. 1980ies, i would expect that this is made up by good soft features. Not so much here - but at least the staff was super nice.

Some graffiti on walk around Essen
Very nice rooms.
Breakfast was ok but not what one would expect for this type of hotel.
People at the reception are very helpful but when they proposed a restaurant to eat, they could have mentioned that the prices at that restaurant are excessively high. One would think they get a commission to send people...

We had a hotel room here as well as another hotel which worked out great as the room here was a little on the small side. The breakfast room was hectic to say the least and the lack of clean tables a little annoying. There was an event on here which we attended which was great as events go So the hotel may have been a little busier than normal.
A good hotel for a couple of days stay.
Hotel is fine. Room was clean, roomy, shower was.... WORKING. This is for some reason kind of holy grail, that many hotels do not have.
It maybe i got used to 0.3 star hotels.
Anyway, the breakfast was good. Nice touch was crispy bacon and possibility to make fresh waffles. Awesome stuff!
The parking is... just enough.
The girl in the reception managed to hide cringe on her face when confronted with useless, cheesy remarks of my friend, so few points here.
Suming up, it's ok, but nothing i wouldn't expect anywhere else, to be honest.
Stayed here 2 nights . Nice hotel overall. Very good service and staff. Breakfast was very good. Rooms ok everything worked but a bit tired and old-ish however the bathroom had been renovated so that was really good. I think it’s a lot better than the other hotels nearby.
Hotel needs to be updated. Expensive during exhibitions.
But service is good. People are very kind. Breakfast is ok. Coffee is not.
Close to metro is very convenient
This review is just about the bar! I did not stay at the hotel.
The bar has a very nice design and comfortable setting. The variety off gin is amazing. For a nice evening and good conversations with friends definitely worth a visit.
Very well-kept hotel with a beautiful lobby and very good atmosphere. The rooms are super clean, and though a bit basic they are very comfortable.
The room was big and nice. The view outside the window is amazing. I only had issue with the Heating of the room on day 1 but it was resolved after I complained. The amenities were also not there in the room when I checked in. I had to call and ask for them. And on the day of check out, the housekeeping staff kept coming back and asked thrice when am checking out so that they can clean the room. I felt it really disturbing. Otherwise food is nice, but they have very few options for room service.
The hotel room was a terrible experience. The room was dirty, the bed sheets were ripped and there was no aircon or even a fan present. The bedroom and bathroom were both really outdated. The closet was missing a door and the shower was broken and full of lime. Sleeping was nearly impossible, tiny bed and the pillows provided were almost even thinner than the bed sheets. Only thing decent was the breakfast. I want to note that for vegan or halal there were not a lot of food options. I want to finish this review by saying that we came in late and there was no receptionist present anymore and we had to call a number and we got a code to get our key. We tried to call the hotel in the afternoon but it was only possible to do till 14:00hr or something (this was on a Saturday). I don't want to bash this hotel but we took a cheaper room because we only needed to spend the night but this was a terrible experience. Maybe the more expensive rooms are better I don't know.
Absolute horror show. Dirty, tiny rooms in need of a lot of updating and TLC. No air conditioning. Ridiculously small television. No ironing boards available behind reception. And still more expensive than many of the far better hotels in the town centre. Avoid
Truly awful experience.
1. We came at 16 o'clock with a baby and reception wasn't working. We waited 20 minutes and nobody appeared.
There were no instruction where to get key for a room we booked.
We had to make international phone call and spend extra money in for roaming.
It is absolutely impossible to find the key box by yourself, because it is located outside of the hotel, on the backyard.
2. The room that was provided was different from we booked online. Conditions there were much worse, in any possible way.
3. Front entrance stopped working and I had to take all the heavy luggage through the parking and backyard.

Definitely won't recommend it
Although, as noted by many, the rooms are not appealing to the eye because of the dated look, the hotel is kept very clean. I personally stayed in the suite which includes a kitchenette area that has a sink, microwave, dish/cutlery set, larger pullout trash, and the typical small fridge. Also included is a large desk area, a sofa bed, a separate bedroom with a very large bed that is comfortable. The room, however, does lack a safe to secure your items. There are two air conditioning units but with my stay being in winter, I cannot speak on them but heating works really well. Unlike a lot of other hotels, windows not only tilt open but up fully which is a bonus. Lastly, for the room, water pressure is really good and no issues of running out of hot water.

Moving on past just the room, reception is very welcoming and seem to genuinely care about taking care of their guests. The optional breakfast has more options than the typical hotel spread of meat, bread, and cheese. In addition to this, you have the option to make your own waffles, there was bacon, sausage, scrambled/boiled/eggs over easy, fruit, 3 types of yogurt, nice selection of jam, 3 types of honey, 6 types of cereal I recall, among other items not mentioned. Lastly, the location is great with lots of restaurant options in the area and the mall right across the street. As I write this review, I have been staying here now for 7 days and have another 14 to go and will update the review if necessary.

Update: the rest of our 14 days was a pleasant experience and I definitely recommend others to stay here.
It was not a good hotel. I will not suggest anyone to stay in this hotel.
Authentic gasthaus - basic, solid accommodation
Was nice.
Very nice
