If you like a good motte and bailey - and who doesn't - then this is one of the best preserved I've seen. Totally excellent with commanding views from both motte and bailey. Access is better from the car park in the village up the lane to the farm. The alternative 'direct' route - along the 'main' road - is pretty perilous and the footpath can be boggy.

Unless it's moved we couldn't find it .. possible sat nav issues

Toller Ort!

The village of Elsdon is of particular interest to me. This is where my family originated from back in 1702/03ish. A baby left on the church steps was named Cuthbert after the church and Elsdon as this was the village. I always believed that this was as far back as i could get but looking through some old papers tonight i have found the name of his father. Not sure how correct it is so it is a work in progress

Not a lot of castle but nice to discover it

Not much to see on the site itself, and someone has taken down the sign board so there is nothing to read about the site. Beware the angry sheep grazing! It is a lovely view from up there though

Nice old castle. Not much there and kids playing around the walls was nice to see.

To be frank it is a ruin. Lots of impressive earthworks and very peaceful. Worth a look for the natural beauty surrounding it but you will have to imagine what it was once like.

Brilliant evening at Elsdon Castle

Calling it a castle is a bit misleading. It's actually the remains of a motte and bailey castle built shortly after the Norman conquest. That said, it's still worth a visit, partly to soak up the atmosphere, which is powerful, and then to stroll round Elsdon, which is one of Northumberland's many fine villages. There's a 14th century pele tower too where Lewis Carroll's grandfather lived when he was rector.
