Absolutely stunning place to visit. A must to all the tourist visiting Thailand. Located in the province of Kanchanaburi and it’s a little over an hours drive from Bangkok once you managed to get out of it that is. A significant WWII historical site to visit. You can hop on the train from the rail station which is literally at one side of the bridge and head towards Nam Tok station which is the end of the line that was built by the captured allied forces during the war. You can walk on the bridge itself but beware of stray dogs chilling on the walk ways at night as it can be difficult to see with the lack of lighting on the bridge for pedestrians. Alternatively you can use a torch.
The bridge over the River Khwae (Kwai) is a must visit when in Kanchanaburi. If you walk across the bridge you get a lovely view of the river and the surrounding area. And if you time it right you can see a train going by as well!

This is such an interesting place to visit with so much history involving the POWs in World War II. We were able to walk over the bridge and then we took the train that still runs for an hour and a half and rode over the bridge on our way back. Don't miss doing this, take a tour when yiu are in Bangkok. We took the Trip Advisor tour and it was well worth the $40 Canadian for a full day tour with a great lunch included.

It was fun to stand there and see the train pass through. The train was old and looked like trains in Vietnam. There were many people there to see the train and after that take pictures of the railway, the temple nearby and the river. We spent some time there to take pictures and walk along the railway. After that we found a place where the street vendors sold coconut. We decided to try some. The coconuts were cool, sweet and fresh. The price was cheap.

Historical place, there are plenty of food options, a 7-11 and souvenir shops around the area. You can walk across the bridge and read the information about the old times. You can see the scenic view of river Kwai and massive statue of Chinese goddess Guanyin opposite side.

River Kwai bridge is a very important place in Thailand and something that Thai people are very proud of.

We were lucky enough to visit the bridge on the annual festival of Kanchanaburi. It was an amazing festival with a huge night market, light show at the bridge and a whole theater. Gorgeous!
Interesting to see and to learn a bit about history. Memories coming up from the movie.
To walk over the bridge is for free. Nice view over the river. We spend there around 1 hour.

Great food market there
Historical bridge with a lot of nice places to take photos
The museum is few minutes walking distance, for only 50 baht you can go through a tour of the world war era.
Street food is nice on both ends of the bridge. A bit slippery when it rains.

What a though provoking place this is
Peaceful, yet powerful
Can walk over the bridge when there isn't a train coming. That's only a few times a day
When the train arrives it transverses the bridge at a fast walking pace, but don't try to out run it

Take a long boat along the river to the cave and the war cemetery where fallen soldiers lay who sadly lost their lives building the railway that crosses the river over the bridge.
There's a few cemetery around this area, please take the time to visit to pay your respects
Lest we forget

Good views in either direction can be seen from the road bridge over the river Khwae Yai. To the West in the distance is the famous railway bridge. To the East in the distance is the Wat Thewa Sangkharam.
If the bridge is marked as a hotel, there are river side resorts on either side of the bridge.
Google maps does not have a way of marking bridges ( on Android )
