This place was very well recommended, but I have to say it didn't quite hit the mark. It might be a small neighborhood sushi place, but prices are borderline downtown level. The sushi is not bad, but average at best. The local is mostly suited for takeout, so don't expect a great dining experience if you are into that.

Bento box beef dry and tasteless. Rice was either old or not well cooked. Used to be decent quality for price, now price and quality going in opposite directions and it ain't good.

Sushi Well uses pink rice to make their sushi! The pink color comes from a premium quality pink sushi vinegar which is made from organic fruits and vegetables. This pink vinegar is said to be highly nutritious and the sushi they make with it is super delicious as well!

I was going to a picnic gathering, and I knew the others would be bringing plenty of other food items so I just ordered three items from here to bring to the picnic:

Mango Avo Roll
Dragon Roll
Salmon Oshi

All three of these rolls were superb! Flavors were on point, ingredients were fresh and we were all very much impressed with the seared flavor of the Salmon Oshi.

This place is my new favorite for sushi. I will happily come here again and again and again!

Service: Good
Parking: Paid parking on the street
Location: 538 6th St., New Westminster, BC

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to enjoy a good healthy meal! I was very satisfied. Their mangoes were fresh and delicious. And their rolls were bigger than expected. It's very budget-friendly as well. I'll definitely be back! Thank you guys!😊😊

ordered Tuna sashimi, it was like frozen and had long thread like legaments and i spoke to server, and showed the legaments to her, instead of fixing the issue, she started arguing by saying that sashimi is exactly like that. i told her i'm a regular sashimi eater, and i know how sashimi should be. any way, this was very low quality food and I didn't appreciate the way customer service handled the complaint.

It was first time checking out this place in person as I usually ordered from here to go. The place was very busy but thankfully they had a spots to sit near the front door area on a small section looking out onto the streets. A server came by to fill my tea cup for me as I looked over the menu. The only knock against this is I was looking at the menu after a couple of minutes but had to wait a bit before someone came and took my order. Once they did they were very friendly and had to double check that they had uni in house as it's a seasonal thing. I got my Wakeame salad fast as the the sushi chefs took their time on making my rolls. Once the rolls came over to me I looked at them as they looked very delicious. The fact that they use pink vinegar here to give their sushi a different look and taste is very unique. I tried the Nigiri first which were full of flavor of each of the fish and the uni melted on my tongue. The chicken teriyaki roll was smaller then the ones I usually get at other place but I found out this one was full of flavor and had a great taste to it. Their house roll on the other hand was very very good. Nice pieces of sushi packed with great flavor. Will be coming back soon to try the rest of the menu
Excellent menu selection at Sushi Heaven. This place is a gem for a casual dinner or get together with friends. Great combinations on the menu and a variety of rolls to choose from

Small little place in a strip mall. Just went in for a quick meal. It doesn’t look like much, but the quality of the food was amazing. I was very pleasantly surprised. Way better quality then I expected going into the place. The nigiri was amazing!

This Japanese’s restaurant has a good variety of sushi choices on their menu. I ordered sushi rolls , and other things from menu and everything was very tasty and fresh.
Pricing is fair ,not too expensive and waitress was very polite so I’ll definitely come back.
All recommendations for this place.

It’s my favourite eat in sushi spot in new west! Consistently good, and the people are nice. I’m always satisfied with the freshness here, and the price is fair in my opinion.
Normally I have had no complaints with this place and I hate to complain about food, but I will not be going back after today. I ordered the special bento, picked it up myself, left a good tip and when I got home it was terrible. The sashimi tasted like it had been left out, there was no wasabi or ginger, the salad was just soggy lettuce. It wasn’t even busy, no excuse to just slap together an order like that.

Ki-nda dry…

During my youngling years, used to come here with friends when it was a Chinese restaurant. Then came a couple of times when the Neptune group took over and turned it into this Japanese restaurant.

It’s located right across the street from the New West skytrain station. There are a handful of free parking spaces available on its private parking lot, otherwise it’s paid street parking or the parkade.

Inside is a pretty basic layout with booth seats by the window, tables to the middle and the sushi bar to the inner corner. Very casual setting.

Here were the food I ordered;

1. Miso soup (Complimentary). Nice and hot the way I like it, thank you!
2. Tako wasabi. Fresh and pretty good, probably one of the best price so far for this dish compared to other places.
3. Kani sunomono. First, it was too sweet (added too much sugar), secondly the amount of crab meat was almost a joke (come on guys, the prepackaged low quality crab meat is cheap), lastly the crab meat was dry! (Hint: There’s a new supplier has better and whole crab meat chunks, better and same price!)
4. Soft shell crab. Decent size, lightly battered and seasoned just the way it should!
5. Oyster motoyaki. It was okay but I would like it more if they were made from fresh oysters on a shell.
6. Sakura roll. Looked very promising like a blossom in the menu but in reality just another basic roll with no hint of Sakura whatsoever. (It’s called a Sakura roll, add some pink or red to it!!!)
7. Red tuna, albacore toro, salmon, chopped scallops, tamago, ikura nigiris. The toro was missing that butteriness, the chopped scallops and tamago were okay, ikura was so so, the salmon and red tuna were dry.
8. Assorted sashimi. I honestly am shocked on how every piece of the sashimis could be so dry and tasteless. It literally seems like the chef dab dry every single piece of sashimi with bounty paper towels.

The services here were quite accommodating and friendly, at least during my visit here.

As for the food, I remember it used to be decently okay, maybe different chefs?! It was somewhat disappointing during this visit; some of the ingredients were off, the sashimis and nigiris were quite dry. This is a prime location for any restaurant in New West and offers great potentials if it offers their customers quality food and service, unfortunately it fell quite short this time around.

It’s a Korean style sushi place with lovely pink sushi rice which makes it unique. My favorite item is the mango avocado roll because it’s light and refreshing and the mango was sweet and fresh.

The tuna and salmon sashimi were fresh and not fishy at all. The bento boxes and dinner combos are a good deal which included multiple items to try. Everything tasted pretty standard and as expected otherwise.

I tried different dishes - mixed tempura, pink sunshi rolls, unagi roll, dynamite and BC roll.

I like everything especially their pink sushi roll because it is the healthier version.

Service was prompt and friendly. Atmosphere had a family friendly vibe, it was full on a Friday night.

Recommended, will definitely go back.

I want to love this place for the pricing (because you hardly see prices like this anymore in greater Vancouver), but unfortunately the sushi ingredients are just not fresh enough to justify a perfect score.

I got the combo A and the dynamite roll was soggy, the cali rolls tasted off.

That being said I will probably go back:
The ladies working there are very nice and friendly, and I wonder if trying a different menu item would change my mind.

Great place for sushi, food was tasty and fresh. The tempura lightly battered and sashimi great. They serve pink sushi rice, which surprised me. The service was great even though the place was packed on a Sunday 3pm. Plenty of street parking around the block. The street is a bit sketchy so don't leave belongings on plane sight.

I have tried different sushi places in Uptown New West and several places downtown New West (mostly close to NW skytrain station, 5 restaurants..). I have discovered Yen Sushi when I moved to the area last year and I can honestly say this is the best sushi place in New Westminster! Excellent quality, tasty and affordable.
I would highly recommend them. Stop by, you will not regret it.

Perfect sushi rice and flavors every time . Bestest sushi restaurant in New West. Really love Ikoi sushi and such a hidden gem. Wish I came here years ago.

Ikoi sushi has always been consistently great. My kids love Ikoi sushi💞 their dynamite roll is outstanding-I’ve never had a stale shrimp tempura, their dynamite roll has consistently been crunchy.

Please keep up the great work. Such a treat to be able to pick up great sushi so close to home! You guys rock !

Sushi to start, then noodle soup, both of them they served very fast. At the end the chicken appetizer was delayed because the restaurant got busy, a lot of people. It means people know this restaurant it's good so they got busy. It's a good signal. I enjoyed a really good meal. I'm not good with the name of the dishes, but you have to know that most of them are delicious.
I live around the area, but never checked the place out. We had dinner tonight with my fiancée and, we literally eat multiple times a week different places, and this is by far the best sushi restaurant. I mean it. Fresh, worth a price of what you get!

Definitely recommend it!

Okonoki special roll was excellent. Monkey brains was good too. Both had similar flavor profile though so just one of the two would be ok. Decent sushi. Good service. Was very clean and the place looked nice.

Each time I came here the personal at the register are unpleasant and they speak in they own language to make sure we will not understand. It's good food but it’s not in off because if the staff is racist, rude and arrogant why are you selling food if you are able too be patient towards all your customers. I already came there 4 times, and it’s always the same.

Really wanted to order some sushi for lunch, but couldn't. Never received the account verification code. And the menu service site doesn't allow to check-out as guest, pretty unusual. Forces you to create an account to receive spam texts and emails. No food for me. No money for you.

Came in near the end of lunchtime (ends at 4). Service prompt, polite, and all the necessary communication. Free cup and refills of green tea.

I ordered lucky lunch and the miso soup was above and beyond: it had tofu, scallion, and wakame. Agedashi tofu was notable too: daikon shavings and scallions, thin but crispy batter.

The sushi rolls were on the large side with lots of filling-to-rice ratio. A little misshapen but tasty and fills my stomach for what counts as a good price these days ($16.50). The beef teriyaki roll had less cucumber and rice than I'd like and I'd prefer the beef colder and a bit drier. The tempura yam seems to feature a mix of yellow and orange sweet potato. When the pieces are this big compared to rice, it has an overall mushy texture.... but I can't argue with the speed and bang for my buck!

I loved that the sauces weren't too sweet, especially the teriyaki. I coulda sworn I tasted a bit of dark (chinese) shoyu along with the light for uniquely savory flavour...

Finally, the wasabi and sushi ginger were mild and refreshing. The place felt clean and well spaced. Relaxing and elegant yet unpretentious aesthetic. Not too loud or chaotic. Bathroom was decent

Btw there were more tofu than this, like 5 of them. I ate those food

It's a quaint little place with a few nice staff and the prices are great. But the food quality is just not great. The sushi was not tasty and the sunomomo was actually purple and had a piece of raw broccoli in it.

Food was average. Udon was too salty for my taste, I would love it if they put some veggies in udon. The Carliforna rolls were good enough for me, I liked it. I feel like the salad was not really fresh. Tempura was good, not the eggplant one though, was soggy. The Chicken Katsu tasted okay, nothing special.

Service was also average. It was not really busy at the time we dined in. Feel like the servers were not really initiative. E.g, other restaurants’ server would always come check on you and ask for any problems, or simply refill your water. Not here in this restaurant. And they have the audacity to give the looks when we decided not give tips. Did not have check up on customers and water refill and stuff.

Not worth coming back. Food was just average. Nothing special. You can find better Japanese restaurants somewhere here in New West.

Perhaps one of the best authentic Japanese meals we have had recently. You will find some unique and traditional Japanese dishes here that many Japanese restaurants will not carry nowadays: real tobiko, ikura, masago, anago, aji, etc. They were fresh and sweet. We ordered these in the form of temaki sushi. I couldn't believe that how generous that they put the tobiko, ikura on top! It was a real deal for me. The wasabi is made of the real one, not the mimic horseradish. The staffs were really friendly.
I understand the frustration that some of the other reviewers expressed - e.g. minimum charge of $15 per person. When you have kiddos it seems unreasonable. However, for two of us, we easy ate over $80 there (ate too much, now groaning), the $15/p seems not a difficult thing.
My favourite: tori karaage (fried Juicy boneless chicken), Tobiko nigiri sushi (flying fish roes), masago nigiri sushi (smelt fish roes), aji butterly fries, dragon rolls.

The food looked good here, however the flavours were a pretty off. The poke bowl was far too sweet and the prawn tempura tasted too much like egg. I think their regular sushi may be okay, we never got a chance to try it, but their special stuff we tried was not very good.

We called before and made a reservation for a group of seven before we came, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The waiter was not overbearing and only came over when needed.
The Ingredients were very fresh, and the everything was delicious, we all had different dishes and everyone loved their food. I would definitely recommend the veggie spring rolls and their pink rolls. We also had the peach growers, the drinks menu isn't very big, there's only 5-6 drink options.

I asked for a takeout of chicken teriyaki bento, it didn't take so long (around 15 minutes), friendly service, good amount of food, fresh products and really delicious, I was really surprised about the cost benefit of this dish. I will definitely go back to try the sushi, good that my workplace is near by.

They are always fast and fresh😋
When I have a house party, I always order from Togo sushi. I can't believe I can eat such delicious sushi at a reasonable price!!! (Especially my japanese friends are so satisfied!!!!!!!)
I will buy some food here at the next party too!
Prawn tempura, miso soup and avocado roll were fine. I ordered a spicy tuna don buri as my main but did not like it. The spicy sauce to me tasted like that fake spice you find in instant noodle soups, but the consistency was lumpy, and the tuna itself did not taste fresh (threading texture). Took two bites and asked the server to please take it away. I order the avocado roll instead.

They still charged me for a dish I did not eat. I asked the waitress why that was and she just nervously laughed and started apologizing stating there was nothing she could do for me.

I am very disappointed.
It certainly feels like they just robbed me $18.50 dollars. Would not recommend and will not return.

Arigatou ありがとう !
This little joint is dope, an awesome spot to grab some good eats sushi grub when your in the hurry from RCH Hospital which has limited options within the area, especially those that are literally adjacent and 200 meters from the entrance.
The Agedashi Tofu 揚げ出し豆腐 I must admit was super weird and tasted more like fish stick style batter or nuggets, rather than Tempura. Albeit, the rest of the sushi was plentiful portion and plenty of yummy fresh Edamame 枝豆. The Dynamite Roll 炸虾卷 in fairness was the yummiest, totally dig the added crunchy Yam in there as a sweet edition.
Super friendly couple running a quaint, low fuss and minimalistic sushi and poké joint with a nice vibe after very reasonable fare.

They have a good variety of sushi choices on their menu but I found their sushi rice lacked the usual plumpness, sweetness, and vinegar flavor other places have. The sushi was not bad, but overall, quite average. For the price you pay, I have had nicer and tastier sushi at the same price or cheaper. It still does the job of satisfying a sushi craving though. Like a standard neighborhood sushi place.

Free parking and in downtown New west near Douglas College.

Location has great service and good portions.

The food is good and filling. Nothing special or over the top but if you are in New West and feel like Sushi this is a safe place to go to.

We had a great vegetable tempura, beef tar tar, salmon sashimi which was sockeye (not Atlantic Salmon), as well as 2 of their specialty rolls which were all good.

$$
Great atmosphere with friendly staff! Fresh sushi and the staff were accommodating with last minute order changes

I got the tuna and salmon combo

Sushi Yen is now Yen. Had the chicken teriyaki, red dragon roll and avocado roll. Great food, super fresh. I liked how I had the option for vegetables, rice or noodles to go with my chicken teriyaki. Not your normal sushi restaurant that serves a weak teriyaki. This teriyaki is well made!

Didn't have to make a reservation on a weekend evening and got seated right away. The tables are not extremely close together so there is some comfort in having the extra room. Staff were patient in giving time to wait for the rest of our party and to order.
Food arrived within a reasonable time after ordering and was quite good. Rice was cooked well and food was hot. Wouldn't say that the food is exceptional, but is definitely fairly priced and of good quality.
Would recommend a visit if you're looking for some standard Japanese food.
Nice little place, unfortunately the sushi was average. Too much rice on the Nigri and specialty rolls. Fish was good but overpowered by the excess rice. Service was pleasant. Prices are reasonable. Overall a nice place and if they put less rice I will be back.

I came right when it opened and it was quiet, but as soon as 11:40am hits, everyone from the hospital will be lining up here.

It's a nice mom and pop shop that serves a lot of food items. You can get a sushi burrito or their version of poke bowl if you order using the sheet at the counter. Otherwise the main menu won't have it.

Nabeyaki udon - big portion. Looked good but the soup was lacking umami. Just tasted like soup soy sauce that you can buy.

Tempura - very well fried. Not oily. Not overfried and hard. Very delicate crunch.

I took a sashimi salad and chicken katsu don home.

Sashimi salad - big pieces and many pieces of salmon and tuna. This is a big plus over other places. Downside is that there is not much noodle so it's not very filling, and not a lot of sauce. Just a couple of drizzles of their house made salad sauce and where is my wasabi mayo ㅠ.ㅠ . I had to add some of my sesame salad sauce at home or else it didn't taste like anything.

Chicken katsu don - big pieces of chicken katsu. Also lacking sauce here so the whole thing was quite dry.

This place gives you bigger pieces and somtimes bigger portions of things but it doesnt give enough flavor. I think if you try the sushi rolls, it would be good because of the big sashimi pieces but so far, anything that needs a sauce or soup doesn't have much taste. However, I can see others' photos of the poke bowl and special rolls look good and saucy. Maybe I'll try that next time.

Wow! Highly impressed. Absolutely delicious and high quality sushi. Not a speck of fishiness in the sashimi. Such a clean finish in the mouth with each bite. Presentation for takeout was excellent. Price for what you get is extremely fair. Portions are large. Perfect rice to fish ratio for sushi and nigiri. Everything was done fresh and well. Tempura was crisp. Salad was refreshing. A pretty perfect takeout dinner. Would highly recommend. The couple working there are also friendly.

It’s been quite a few years since I last ate at Sushi Yen so I figured it would be a good time to revisit this little eatery located in New West.

I had my eye set on trying their Donkatsu Curry Pork Cutlet ($10.90). While it’s far from the katsu curry that we’ve had in Japan, this basic dish is rather large and filling. The pork cutlet is thin and a bit dry but they’ve made up for this by providing a lot of curry sauce in the dish. I was a bit surprised that I actually wound up finishing all of the curry sauce here (so perhaps it was better than I initially thought). The sharp flavour of the ginger actually worked well in this dish given the mildness of the curry.

On a subsequent visit, I tried their Aji Fri ($5.50) which they described as yellow stripe scad which is a type of horse mackerel. Served breaded and deep-fried on top of a spring mix salad with a mayo sauce, I found the crisp coating to be pleasant and this almost had me thinking about fish and chips (sans chips).

The Salmon Tataki ($10.90) that i also ordered turned out really well. Served with a tart ponzu sauce, I really enjoyed how tender the salmon turned out in this dish.

On their special board, I noticed that they had a Salmon Poke Bowl ($12.50) so I had to give that a go. This bowl includes the salmon sashimi, ginger, spring mix salad, paprika, cucumbers, green onions, sweet onions, seaweed salad, crab meat, and shoyu sauce. I wouldn’t really say that I could detect the shoyu sauce as it was a bit overwhelmed by the overly sweet salad dressing but it was a nice try.

On my last visit, I tried their Spicy Salmon Sashimi ($10.90) which included 10 pieces of salmon with cucumbers, spring mix, sesame, and coated with a sweet and spicy sauce.

They have a small patio in front of the shop and I took advantage of the good summer weather we’ve been having to try out some of their sushi rolls: Unagi Roll ($5) and Alaska Roll ($6.50) with teriyaki sauce and wasabi mayo. The rolls were filling… mostly because they had a bit too much rice for my preferences. Not bad for the price.

Overall, some good items on the somewhat limited menu. I would like to see more types of sashimi available.
Excellent service, we stayed past closing (didn't realize they had already closed while we were eating) yet our server didn't rush us and was super attentive the whole time we were there. They had a ton of vegetarian options clearly marked on the menu to choose from and everything was delicious. Would definitely recommend the Hashbrown Roll! There are a couple of free parking spots right in front of the restaurant.
