Oglethorpe Square
2023 Dec 15
One of the original squares established in 1742. It is absent statues, monuments and memorials, but has many benches and large trees and the surrounding area consists of both residential and commercial. One of the Trustee lots is the Owens-Thomas house, an English Regency-style house museum, built in 1819,
There was a lot more there than I expected! Many things were blooming, although it was Fall. I am looking forward to future trips when more is in season. I loved seeing all the butterflies. Some paths are paved and there are also natural paths throughout the wooded areas of the property. Information signs were everywhere to provide details of plants, trees, the property and about farm life. You can tour the Bland's house to see how they lived. A lot of care has been given to the property. I will certainly return.
Luetta Moore Park

The park has been remodeled since the Google pictures were taken and the ballfield is now a playground. This is a much better use of the space and will benefit more kids. (History: the railroad once came down MLKJ Drive and curved around this location and to the northwest, but that was many years ago)

I visited early in the morning and it was very peaceful. The grounds are well-maintained, and they utilized the space very effectively. I can see how this is very informative and educational, especially for the children. It's a great place to step back in time for a few minutes, or just to go and relax.
