We decided to visit The Highlanders Bakehouse after reading good reviews online.
We were not disappointed and would highly recommend a visit here if in the area.
It’s much nicer and more reasonable than anything in Balmoral so why not give it a try.
The whole ethos of the owners and the soundtrack of the place certainly hit the spot with us. You have to be brave with a soundtrack like this as it could scare people off but for us it was just magic !!!

The food was just amazing with everything being made on site. This business started as an extension to a baker supplying local outlets with breads and cakes to now supplying these on site.

The young couple who own and run this Bakehouse along with the young member of staff who takes your order should be applauded for everything they do. Starting to bake bread at 2am and still in the Bakehouse at midday not only shows a Love for the business but a desire to serve and be successful.

It is a bit quirky but we loved it and will certainly be back!

We had Bacon and runny egg on Focaccia along with a Cinnamon Bun with drinks. All tasted absolutely brilliant !
Bean For Coffee

Stopped for a quick coffee and a bite to eat during a visit to Ballater.

One Carrot cake and one Pancakes with bacon and Maple syrup with coffee.

Food is very basic, Cake was good but Pancakes and bacon not so much. The bacon looked like it had been cooked 2 days before and then reheated in a dirty pan as there was egg and white fat all over it. The bacon was hard and could have been snapped in two , not nice.

There are other places in Ballater that on reflection look a lot better than here !
Balmoral Castle

Balmoral castle is a great place to visit with amazing gardens and grounds to explore.
The Ballroom is not open to the public at the moment along with some areas of the grounds but we had a brilliant afternoon exploring the gardens and viewing the alterations and landscaping taking place.
The vision of the King for the new planting within the grounds is exciting and will be worth a return visit in the future.

We also had a very pleasant walk along the river path and although there were other visitors and despite a group of very noisy sports cars our walk was very peaceful.

On our way from Braemar to Balmoral 3 McLaren sports cars overtook us doing about 80 miles an hour. These 3 cars were definitely racing and nearly took a cyclist out on the opposite side of the road. There is no way that people like this should be allowed to parade their toys in the grounds of the castle and should definitely take some time to reflect and grow up !
Indigo Yard

What a rip off !

This is the second time that we have been to Indigo Yard for their so called 241 offer on mains during October.
On both occasions despite booking a table for 241 we have been billed for the full amount which has meant we have had to request a revised bill.
This is not only embarrassing but also raises the question, is this policy to see if the staff can get away with it!
In addition to this when presented with the new bill I asked to include 10% tip, the waitress then handed me the card machine with the various tips to include, I pressed the digit to include 10% tip.
What the waitress didn’t say was that there was already 12.5% added to the bill so in total I paid 22.5% tip !!!!
This is a dishonest practice and all customers should be aware of this.
We would normally have numerous family festive outings to Indigo Yard , not this year we are going somewhere that is not out to rip us off !!!
It’s a real shame as the food was great but the staff, well what’s that all about ?
Beware, Beware, Beware !

Another lunch at All Bar One and their Loyalty offers are not what they seem.

As long term customers of All bar One we recently joined their Loyalty scheme as we felt we had nothing to loose and the prospect of deals was appealing.

Our latest booking for lunch did not go well as the offer of a complimentary main was not fulfilled due to confusing terms and conditions.

When I asked about the two mains for one offer the waitress said Steak was not allowed but thought that as we would pay full price for the Steak we could get a Salad for free, if it didn’t work with the deal she would do something to make it work !

This didn’t happen so we had to pay full price for both meals.
We were given a Brownie for free but were not impressed and wouldn’t have ordered the steak under these circumstances.

We were also charged 10% service charge which was not the case last month.

Overall we were disappointed with our visit and will probably not be back, there are better places in Edinburgh for lunch at a cost of £70+

Our previous visits have been fairly good so will leave previous review here for a while.

3 weeks agoWe had been warned service would be slow due to a man down in the kitchen and the waitress was not wrong so glad for the warning.

We started with Karaage Chicken which was sticky, sweet and tasty with a bit of a kick.
This was followed by Fish & Chips and Chicken Chorizo Skewers.
Unfortunately there was no Steak today due to a technical issue in the kitchen so that Steak will need to wait until our next visit.
The Sweet Potato fries were a bit over cooked verging on burnt and the fish was a bit dry but apart from that all good.
There were no Chocolate Brownies or Chocolate Torte available so Churros were a great end to a very tasty lunch all washed down with a bottle of house Merlot.

The young waitress who served us throughout was very welcoming, and friendly from start to finish.

Due to the issues with food and slow kitchen service we will probably not be back.
