Congratulations to Alex Webb on his engagement. The poor quality of the food and service was so obvious that we asked if he was in the kitchen and were told that he was away to celebrate this. In his absence, despite the best efforts of the restaurant manager, our dinner was such as to bring his name into disrepute.

The cod was not so bad as to be sent back – just overcooked and devoid of life and flavour. The pork, however, was sent back – tough and a challenge to the jaw muscles; the second serving was a little better but still very ordinary. The main courses manifested a (very) heavy hand in the kitchen, particularly with the salt. And the disk (biscuit??) under the chocolate sphere for dessert seemed to be based on some concrete brought from a building site – we did not risk our teeth on it.

The first bottle of white wine presented to us was warm and the wine consequently tasted like sugar water; we were told that there was a problem with the fridges but a second bottle was properly chilled and as it should have been. We did not get crispy potatoes as advertised with the cod nor, at the first serving, a spoon for the barley with the pork or forks for the desserts.

A good meal should lift the spirits but, although we were only charged for one meal and the wines (which were the one positive element of our dinner) and nothing for the service, this was just depressing. We went home to have a glass of good Calvados to remove the coating of salt from our mouths and alleviate the damage done to our digestive tracts.

As the restaurant is only open for four evenings in the week, we were surprised that Alex Webb should choose to be absent on a Friday dinner service It seems that the Alex Webb restaurant without Alex Webb might be an offence under the Trades Descriptions Act.
