Great performance. Really recommended must visit in Vienna we watched Don Giovanni.

The Opera building is one of the most magnificent in Vienna. Even if you don’t go in, you have to see it.
We watched Simon Boccanegra which though not the most exciting of operas was enjoyable especially performed in such a beautiful opera house with good acoustics, and modern touches like individual screens for lyrics in several languages, as well as a good orchestra. The bar room was also very pretty, all in all very worth the visit.

I had the English speaking tour guide, it was absolutely fabulous, very informative and lots of interesting facts about the opera house and the history as well, please of times to ask questions and take photos, engaged really well with the audience. For me it was a great price buying tickets in advance and worth the 40 minutes tour.

We went and did the tour and really enjoyed it. We booked at the start of our trip online for later in the week. You can also go to the booking office 15 mins before the tour times and buy leftover tickets but these do sell out so, I'd recommend booking in advance online. Our tour guide was really friendly and engaging, telling us lots about the history of the building and answering any questions. We had a group of about 20 which was a good size. The tour took about 45 minutes.

Gorgeous architecture suitable to fit plenty of visitors. It is worth seeing and attending an event. If you buy las minute tickets for the seats on the far ends the visibility is very limited, you can enjoy the good music by the orchestra and the singers but not the full performance. There are cloak rooms on each floor, convenient buffet (food better be pre-ordered as there will be queues).

The building is a piece of art on its own. The halls were magnificent. Went on a Friday for a guided tour. We bought tickets at the door as it wasn't very busy. Had a total of 5 languages guided tours happening. English, German, Spanish, Italian and French. 25 people in each group. Though English guided tour had more people than rest guides, the wait wasn't long.

The state opera house speaks for itself, it’s a grandeur/magnificent architecture. To be in one of the show was fantastic “Don Pascale” Great show ever! I highly recommend this place to all tourists to come and watch their event or upcoming shows.

A few tips for visiting the Opera.

There are small screens in front of your seat with captions in multiple languages: German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese (I don't know if it was Mandarin or Cantonese).

You can buy standing tickets for cheap on the day of the opera. You can do this in one of two ways: either queue up about 2hrs before the performance or buy them from the website at 10am sharp. I'd recommend doing it online so that you don't waste precious holiday time by standing in line. I bought standing tickets on the ground floor for €18 and the view was amazing (pictures attached).

My standing ticket had a reserved place, so I didn't need to worry about arriving early. However I'd recommend getting there at least half an hour before, possibly more if you would like to wander around.

You need to check in your coats. You can't just use any cloakroom however because it depends on your ticket, so be sure to have your ticket ready otherwise the cloakroom staff will become impatient.

The lines at the bar can be very long, and the intervals are quite short. You are not allowed to take drinks into the auditorium, so I would get a drink before the show instead.
Lovely evening spent at Volksoper's "Die Fledermaus".

Volksoper is the "second opera" of Wien, less elegant attire either for the building and also more flexible dress code for the audience. No compromise in the pieces though, you know the deal :)

Excellent location (with public transport), convenient and quick service whether entering the building, dealing with the cloakroom or finding the seats. (Btw, cash of 1.10 eur/clothes to be at hand :))

Our seatings were on the parkett: great acoustic, perfect visibility - just as you would expect. English subtitles also easy to follow - and help improve German skills.

Great performance, great theater, recommended.
We had a lovely New Year's Eve at the Volksoper attending Die Fledermaus! Beautiful, classic theatre, in the heart of Vienna! Easy to get to via Vienna's awesome subway system. Great acoustics, fantastic performances by singers and orchestra😁 Make sure you plan to attend a performance in this lovely theatre! Thanks for this❤️❤️🙏🙏

Very good. Came to see Wizard of Oz. An excellent production and amusing interpretation. Very well done. Kids are well catered for with cushions to sit higher in the chairs. Reasonable prices. A great place to enhance your German language skills, thing dialogue to action.

Very beautiful theatre. Looks newly refurbished. Seats are wider than usual, and the view of the stage is very nice, even up in the gallery

Terrible, terrible seats, couldn’t see anything! Broker recommended and said they were good seats. We were on the highest balcony 4 rows back from the front on the side of the balcony. Unfortunately the row in front of us kept leaning forward obstructing our view, b/c they couldn’t see! Such a shame b/c the opera sounded like it might be good, but what’s the point if u can’t see anything. Make sure pick unobstructed views.

To say it’s breathtaking would be an understatement. It’s beautiful but also the operas showed here are incredibly executed. Although a bit pricey, highly recommend getting good seats and attending at least one opera. A truly unforgettable experience.

Very nice old building and good atmosphere in general. Anyhow it seems to be too much people to be put in at any cost. Place at higher levels in everything but row 1 do not make any sense as you will see almost nothing. Stands seem to be the better and cheaper option if you can stand the climate. It is freaking hot inside and only little air circulation. Actually, shorts may be more suitable than a suit to have a comfortable event. In addition, drinks are massively overpriced. You may argue for the location and occasion but a bottle of water remains a bottle of water. Other big event houses offer meanwhile free water as sell service. Probably time to rethink the current concept.
Must visit in Vienna. Another Magnificent architecture testament to the creativity and ingenuity of that time. The whole structure is the masterpiece from outside to inside. The ceilings, column, beam, staircase specially inside the main opera. If you have time, watch an opera, ballet or what is on that time. But buy tickets way in advance. Specially the popular ones. I had a difficult time getting good seat at Giselle 1month before the show.
We did the tour here with a lovely tour guide, and despite not having gone to an opera before, I found it interesting and informative. It's an impressive building and even more so impressive the work that goes on behind the scenes. I'd recommend the tour to anyone with an interest in architecture, history, and of course, opera and the arts.

One of the most amazing buildings in the world. Beautiful on the outside, should see the terrace, but astonishing on the inside. Was lucky to attend an opera performance recently and it was one of my wishes come true. Also the people that work in it, couldn't be more accommodating. A night I'll never forget for sure.
Buy tickets in advance and even if it is in the upper areas, sound and view are great. It's an experience you won't regret.

It was an amazing experience to see an opera. I was travelling from the US and glad I got to experience the wonderful music. I couldn't see all of the stage because of my seat, but I appreciated the music so much that it didn't matter. And the English subtitles were so helpful! Definitely worthwhile to see if you are visiting Vienna.

The place is located close to a subway station which makes it very accessible. It has a modern look and takes a modern twist on classical pieces. The prices are affordable and the opera has many discounts for students. It is not very big but it provides great performances. With that being said, I watched La Traviata there and I thought that maybe they made it a bit too modern.

The Volksoper is a Viennese institution. Smaller and less flashy than the state opera on the Ring, this house presents excellent quality performances at a fraction of the cost. I have been 4-5 times in the past two seasons and really enjoy it. Comfortable seats. Very reasonably priced boxes. Good views from everywhere and fun old school bars during intermission. Worth a visit or three.

Simplistically, it was amazing!

This was first time for me to watch the opera.
It made me so impressed from the beginning of the musical.

In the middle the musical, I slept so comfortable thanks for the good BGM.
Small for a opera house but great experience very close to the audience. Performance was perfect and all the stuff so friendly and helpful.

Beautiful place, but unfortunately I couldn't fully enjoy the play due to awfully narrow seats! They should at least have a warning that this theater is not indicated for people with height 1.90 and more
An alternative opera house in Vienna, they have some interesting alternative productions. Located in the heart of Naschmarkt it's another place you should visit if you're an opera lover, and also if you're not.
My best opera that i have ever seen was tales of Hofmann at theatre an der Wien. It was in 2013. Its the best opera that i have ever seen. It was suspenseful like a movie thriller where i sat on the edge of my seat in suspense. I have never had such an experience like that in an opera before. It is to date the best opera that i have ever seen. The characters played their parts exceptionally well. After more than 5 years, it's still the best opera in my life.
A beautiful, old intimate theater. It's an A house so the productions are always great quality. I'm performing here, and expect a great experience, if I do say so myself.
Buffet was expensive

Un opéra de poche fait de bric et de broc. De jeunes chanteurs : ça change que la jeune princesse ne soit pas jouée par une vieille grosse dondon ! Programmation exigente et déroutante pour qui ne va pas à l'opéra tous les mois

Everything was as it should be 😊
Beautiful building but like many older theatres seat space is restricted, as is the veiw if you are not in the front row of the rings. It was also oppresively hot. We were there for the opening night of William Tell, a fabulous modern adaptation, the sets where impressive and the cast fabulous. However due to our discomfort we had to leave during the interval.

Magnificent theater in the center of Vienna with a wonderful red showroom. Golden statues carry the superior balconies... it's very beautiful.
Wonderful small opera. Nice chamber atmosphere, guests are normal people you can talk to, not so snob as in the Staatsoper. Staff at the bar and wardrobe very nice & sweet

Great, intimate venue, ideal for established and up-and-coming Baroque voices. Their opera in concert programme has been particularly outstanding in recent years. [edit 14 May 2017] Revisited since my review and I had to up one star. I just have the best memories from this place :-)

Beautiful, historic theater located by the Naschmarkt area. The interior is absolutely stunning and worth a peek into. Seats are comfortable but spaced fairly close to each other. During intermission, be sure to take a walk up to the top floors to get a nice overview of the whole hall.

It's a very beautiful Opera house. I went there to see a performance of Fidelio, in May last year.
Even though I don't understand German very well, but since it's an Opera performance, which means that the expressions and movements are exaggerated, I understood the story and I really enjoyed it. I felt very fancy that night :)
