Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church occupies a historically significant building. The church's edifice, designed by the renowned architect Robert W. Gibson, was constructed in 1900. Its architectural style is a blend of English Gothic and Romanesque Revival influences, characterized by its striking stained glass windows and intricate stonework.

The church building itself has a rich history, having been designated a New York City Landmark in 1966 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It stands as a testament to both architectural craftsmanship and the enduring spiritual legacy of the congregation.

The church's historical significance extends beyond its architectural beauty. It has played a vital role in the spiritual and cultural life of the Upper East Side of Manhattan for over a century. This historic building is a symbol of continuity and tradition, offering a sense of connection to the past while remaining a vibrant center for worship and community engagement in the present day.

My grandmother, Edith Holmes Baker, was a paid soloist here at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, in years around 1934. She sang in a high soprano voice with a sweetness that was epic in our family. She and her family lived in Englewood New Jersey during those years.

I have no opinion about the church services, but they sponsor a music series with regular performances called "Music on Madison" by the St Andrew Music Society. The offerings are interesting and by very talented performers. The church sanctuary is absolutely beautiful and makes a fantastic setting for the concerts. Excellent acoustics as well.
