This is an impressive part of Port Arthur. To be completely honest though, since the renovation it has lost its authentic 'vibe'. Before, this place give me chills. You could feel how terrible the prisoners were treated. How they were stripped of their identity. Since the renovation it just looks too new and too clean. It tells an important part of the history but it could have been I'm any building.

But no worries. If this is your first visit, you won't be able to compare.

Either way, ofcourse, this is still worth a visit.

The separate prison is a must see when visiting Port Arthur. Convicts had to remain silent during their time here, so I recommend doing the same to get the feel of what life would have been like. Lots of information about those that spent time here. Very eerie when you're able to wander the building without crowds.

We loved being able to walk around and learn about the prison from yester years. The tour guide was amazing. He shared lots of information and stories with us. Have visited Port Arthur twice and wouldn't hesitate to visit again. Highly recommend.

Well restored and presented this place is great to visit but I am glad I wasn’t one of the residents ! Silent solitaire confinement was the only thing to expect if you ended up in the separate prison (hence the name) although they were I think really trying to reform inmates.

An excellent restoration job with lots of information about the people who lived and worked there. Includes an interesting chapel and exercise areas.

A place to see some of the specific cells and hear stories of some of the prisoners here. There is also a church of sorts, where the prisoners had to stand in individual boxes to the service.
