We visited Victoria during our Daughters volleyball tournament and after doing some walking at the beach, my wife and daughter were hungry. Having passed this place earlier in the day, my wife decided she wanted le to try it.

Mexican Village is a bit out of the way (not on a Main Street) and a bit inset but if you are eagle-eyes, you can see it just off the main road. Ut is a pretty small place, with only three tables inside and three tables outside. The building is shared between two or three restaurants, Mexican village is the one out front.

The decor is nice and is sufficient to make you feel like you are ordering from an authentic place.

When we went, it was near closing time and the chef was working alone. He had a couple of people/orders ahead of ours but still he was very attentive and very fast!

We ordered :

Totopos with guacamole, cream and salsa
4 beef tacos
Chicken enchilada platter
Tortilla soup and
Burrito salad

The totopos (chips) were home-made and delicious, not too salty and flavourful. The salsa and guacamole were also homemade and full of flavour. The table cream was Yumm!

The beef tacos were made with freshly grilled taco steak meat, very fresh corn tortillas and fresh veggies. They were seasons just right. We didn’t ask for spicier salsa, although the Chef said he had some available. They also had a tiny bit of refried beans which added volume and flavour but took away from what a taco should be (meat, onions, cilantro and salsa)

The enchiladas were ‘coloradas’ or with red salsa. We chose the chicken (enchiladas are typically, mostly chicken or pork) he didn’t have pork. The dish came with rice, refried beans topped with Cotija cheese and totopos. The sauce was full of flavour and went very well with the chicken. The beans were also home-made and seasoned perfectly.

The tortilla soup was, as it should be, tomato-based broth (usually mixed with chicken broth and clear) but looked more like tomato paste soup, it had lots of delicious chunks of onion, fresh tomato and some tortillas (definitely not enough to make it a “Tortilla soup” ) it was more like tomato soup with some tortilla chips. Flavour-wise, it was on-point. However there were not enough totopos (tortilla chips) in it. So what we did, is we took all the totopos from other dishes and put them into the soup. Then it really became tortilla soup. It would have been nice to have had some fresh onion and cilantro to put into it as well.

Lastly, the Burrito Salad. It is basically a de-constructed burrito in a bowl. It has Mexican-style fried rice (tomato base), refried beans, lettuce tomatoes, cilantro, onion, table cream, and guacamole. It is best when mixed in with some salsa (ask for the spicier version if you can handle hot) it will be more flavourful.

We shared all dishes and it was filling enough for all three of us. The chef has water available as well as regular, canned and bottled pops for sale. It would be nice if he could offer some Jarritos or other Mexican drinks to accompany his food.

All in all, eating at Mexican Village was a great choice for us. We really enjoyed the very flavourful food and will return if/when given the opportunity.

The service was fantastic. My compliments to the Chef/Server/Owner.

The cost was pretty decent as well. It came to $53.00 for four freshly cooked dishes replete with very fresh condiments.

Sorry, we were so focused on enjoying the food, we didn’t take any photos…

I enjoyed a burrito with good quality beef in it.
Nicely done. It's a funky little spot - 2 inside tables. Outside tables should be good when it warms up. Thanks Gustavo.

This was the second stop on my husband's mini food tour of last weekend. It was a little place tucked in a building near/at Cook Street Village. Doesn't look like your typical eatery, as it does have some outdoor seating and a few tables in the immediate vicinity of the front counter.

I say this because the eatery itself is inside a building shared by two other food establishments, all with their own distinct identity.

There was one main attraction in Mexican Village: Chef Gustav (I believe?). He has created delicious dishes (easy-to-read menu that you don't get overwhelmed with too much selection) that are made just right behind the front counter, and you could see the order being worked on right there.

The ambience of the restaurant has it's charm; I've been to Mexico a few times (but not as much as some others I'm sure)- the decoration and food took me back to when I vacationed there a while back. The salsa was a pleasant surprise- it's his OWN creation, which has this melodious harmony in your mouth that's not overly spicy. I would come back just to taste it. It's not overpowering in spice, but pleasantly flavourful.

I encourage visitors to sample the menu, and appreciate the care that was put into each of the elements in the dishes!

So happy to have stumbled upon this place! The food is AMAZING and the chef/owner is friendly and super kind. So authentic and pure, you can taste the love put into each of the carefully crafted Mexican dishes. There’s a lit outside patio where you can choose to eat or a small dining space inside. Looking forward to eating here again!!!

Cozy little Mexican atmosphere. Indoor and outdoor seating. Food made to order. All fresh ingredients!! Sooo freaking tasty!! Best little hole-in-the-wall we've found in a long time!!
Please excuse the partially eaten food pictures, smelled too good to wait to eat :) Beef tacos, chorizo tacos, pork burrito and a chicken quesadilla and a starter of chips with a medium salsa.
