Another excellent piece of history.

Located just to the south of York Minster, this Roman column once stood within the great hall of the headquarters of the Sixth Legion, inside the walls of the Roman fortress. It was found during excavations of the Minster in 1969, still lying where it had fallen.

A remaining monument to the importance of York, ebor in Imperial Rome.

A very photogenic piece of local history set in the yard outside the front of the amazing York Minster. The free guided Tour of the City stops here and they give an interesting talk on the Column. It's quite good because there is a lot of statues to see in the immediate vicinity of this one as well. Lots to learn and photograph.

York Minsteright Show, viewed from the Roman Column. On until 23rd Feb 23. A great free show. Go and see whilst you can. 6pm till 9pm I think.

They tell us the Romans didn't make it much past this point. Guess they didn't like the cold air up their tunics. To be able to stand next to something so old as this is just a cool thought in and of itself, but to have the wife pole dance on it? Priceless!

Very easy to miss considering it's next to the magnificent York Minster, but this predates it by quite some way.
The column was built in 100ad, and as some local policeman (who had enough information to double as tour guides) told us, it was also installed upside down when it was rediscovered.
Parts of the old Roman barracks is buried under the minister itself. Which can be seen on a visit there.
