Of the Bologna families who had the old family towers built, the Scappis were one of the few who remained in the limelight of the city's public life until the late modern period . The Scappis only died out in 1707.
There is a legend, however proven to be false, according to which the family got its name from a woman who looked out of a window of the houses near the tower and witnessed the escape attempt of King Enzio of Sardinia, who was living in the neighboring one Palazzo Re Enzo was imprisoned. The sovereign was hidden in a basket, but his blonde hair was hanging out and the woman screamed when she saw it: “Scappa, scappa!” (English: escape, escape!). So she ensured that the fugitive was discovered.
The Scappis took part in two crusades and from their ranks came university professors (including Ugolino Scappi ), valuable captains and soldiers, but also a bishop ( Alessandro Scappi ).
Located at the beginning of Via Independenza in the city center, the tower is now 38.4 meters high and dates from 1219 or 1220. The thickness of the walls of 2.9 meters at the base tells us that it must have been planned higher , to compete with the neighboring Torre dei Prendiparte and Torre degli Azzoguidi , but was never finished.
Today the lower part of the tower is integrated into the 16th century Casa Coccapani up to a height of about 20 meters , so that only the upper part is visible. On the ground floor is one of Bologna's oldest and finest workshops, La Coroncina (The Crown), founded in 1694, while further down there is an underground room with a two-meter-high barrel-vaulted ceiling , quite unusual for a tower is.

Nothing special

Brilliant views. Worth the climb!

Lovely
