Nice place but the bridges have broken parts, splinters, and are not bike or stroller friendly
Good fishing and bird watching though. Has a kayak/canoe dock.

A wonderful green and quite place in an urban setting. Spent an afternoon walk and the experience was amazing.
When it comes to wedding venues in Washington, DC, it can be hard to find "hidden gems." But Kingman And Heritage Islands Park is one of them. Located between Kingman Lake and the Anacostia River, the islands are rural enough that you quickly forget how close you are to the rest of the city. So you can have an intimate wedding ceremony that feels like you are out in the middle of nowhere, even though you're in the middle of one of the country's biggest metro areas. As a bonus, the park offers some great spots for your wedding portraits! In particular, the bridges that connect the islands to each other and to the mainland are really unique locations for pictures of the two of you!

Great gem of a park so close to DC. Great for walking and kids.

Trail around Island Heritage trail is great. Parts of the trail is on wooden board walk. There are great places to sit and also has picnic tables.

Visiting DC, rented a bike, and rode to Heritage Island for a quick trail. The dirt trail is short and relatively flat, but it has some pretty good obstacles; would recommend a mountain bike with at least front suspension because there are some big roots that can make it quite bumpy (and slippery after rain). I went in October, and it was empty, felt safe, but I didn't see any ranger or anyone who can help if I ever needed it. 🥲 Some parts had garbage in them, sadly, but other than that, it's a nice and quick escape. Enjoy! 🚴🏻‍♀️

An under-discovered wild refuge in the city. This could be maintained better. There is litter and old concrete strewn about which needs cleanup. Another footbridge at the southern tip of the island to Burnham Barrier Wayside would complete its pedestrian access. There are also many invasive plant species which need to be replaced. However, "all-in-all", very thankful to have this real wildlife area within the concrete jungle of DC. Keep It Wild DC!

This is a nature preserve right in DC. There are walking trails and a few picnic tables. The city noise is all around, but lots of birds and turtles call these islands and the water between them home.

Nice wide boardwalk to the island. Easy access from The Fields parking areas near RFK. Great for exploring and being near the water. The Anacostia River and its waterways aren't the cleanest however it seems to be getting better.
