A short and tragic life. Some critics rank him as highly as Burns.

Saw this statue as I was coming to visit the Cannongate Kirk. It's hard to miss as it stands prominently outside the entrance to the church. This statue stands in tribute to Robert Fergusson, a 18th century Scottish Poet. Despite his short life and even shorter careers, he is widely considered to have been provided inspiration to the Scottish Enlightenment and for having influences the likes of Robert Burns and Allan Ramsay.

The statue depicts Robert Fergusson walking down the Cannongate with a look of joy on his face. He is dressed as a gentleman of the 18th century. There's a great sense of motion about the statue with his coat tail flying behind him to emphasise the effect. In his right hand, he is clutching a book held against his chest.
