Steven is a walking encyclopedia of local mining, geology, and mineralogy. And he’s a warm, engaging storyteller. If you have any interest in why Maine is the Granite State, are a rockhound, or just curious about the fascinating local geology, this museum is a must-see stop if you’re on Mt. Desert Island / the Bar Harbor area!

Steve gives an excellent lesson on the geologic history of MDI, and the men who mined it to build many of America's great monuments and buildings. His enthusiasm for the subject is infectious and the museum he has built is well worth a visit.

My friend and I visited the Maine Granite Industry Historical Society Museum today with many questions. The museum director answered all our questions and gave us a guided tour of the museum. We learned so much. It was a most enjoyable and informative tour. I highly recommend Steven Haynes and his museum to anyone who has an interest in granite, and how it is used in Acadia and the United States. The museum is free but donations are always welcome.

We met Steve 20 years ago when only locals knew him. A great man with a wealth of knowledge. Glad he is being appreciated and celebrated. He has really expanded his museum and presentations. Wishing him nothing but the best.

Highly recommend! A thorough and immersive history on Maine's Granite Industry. The proprietor, Mr. Haynes, is a fount of knowledge and demonstrated several steps of the quarrying and finishing processes for us. Kid friendly and interactive. Come learn about why they call Quarry Trail, Quarry Trail or how Acadia's striking granite bridges were built. Leave a kind donation. It's a great stop for geology or history enthusiasts and aspiring kid geologists!

We got a personal tour from Steve Haynes himself. His presentation and knowledge of the geology and the history of granite itself was phenomenal. I would highly recommend stopping in. Lots of rock samples from all over and tools from local artists machinist.
We loved it.
We loved it.

GO HERE!! It is SO worthwhile - our group of friends in our mid/late 20s all stopped by and truly enjoyed every moment. Mr. Haynes gave us a fantastic tour, enlightened us on the history of Maine and its quarry industry, and even gave us souvenir pieces of granite. He does a lot of field trips so he’s so great with kids! It has easy parking, it’s free/donation-based, and you can check off a box in your junior ranger booklet! Definitely recommend for all ages - let’s keep this place and its history alive!
