Unassuming omakase, very homely and not pretentious. The menu list was printed for you to see at the start with photos. Clear instruction if soy or no soy to ensure you enjoy the piece as intended. Ingredients is top notch. We've had one of the fattiest piece of king fish. The nigiri are refreshing with new flavours. Very decent price. Definitely one of the top omakase in Melbourne, even compared to Minamisima, Komeyui, Warabi and Shusai Mijo.

Visited this restaurant after reading some of the reviews , and personally expected a lot more having seen all the positive reviews and from the perceived exclusivity, we got when we booked
Omakase preset menu
There are two pre-set Omalase options to choose from
$120 which is 8 types of sushi 2 pieces of each per person
and the $ 140.00 which is 10 types
( similar to 120 option except 2 additional )
For me the choices served were nothing out of the ordinary and frankly overpriced for what they were .Presentation was average, I am comparing here to other Japanese restaurants , I realise I might not be fair as each restaurant / sushi chef has their own style.
Of the sushi served for me the Yakiniku beef was the one I preferred the most
The staff were polite and busy seemed like we were being rushed through the servings …
The restaurant was full but lacked an atmosphere of enjoyment , more a sense of somber urgency, probably due to the fact of rushing through the omakase menu
I suppose that’s the Sira Nui Omakase experience
Not for me .. but my wife would probably have been a bit more forgiving in the review she enjoyed a few of the other options
On a positive I did enjoy the Yebisu
I generally like to feel I enjoyed a restaurant when I walk out but not this time …sorry

I have been thinking whether I should leave this review since hubby and I were always happy with the food in the past. We haven't been to Shira Nui for many years and hubby decided to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary there (he didn't mention it's our anniversary at booking). We opted for Omakase dinner and it's a full house that night. We recognised the Chef straight away and we were looking forward to a great dinner. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the food. Like a few other people mentioned in their reviews that the fish weren't that fresh and some were marinated with heavy sauce. We could tell straight away the food was so much different to what we ate in the past. I just felt the food was oily and not as fresh as I remembered. The last photo showed the counter fridge with lots of fish inside. That photo was taken an hour before we finished our dinner and when we left there were still a lot inside that fridge. We never recall something like this in the past. That added to our question whether the fish was fresh enough. The staffs were very attentive as always. But my issue was what happened after dinner.
We got home around 8.30pm and I went to sleep around 10pm without eating or drinking since dinner. The next morning, I woke up with a really bad diarrhea and two more times during the day. **Apologise for TMI next** I didn't feel really sick, just had some mild stomachache but my stool had turned to green colour **again, sorry for the TMI**. I had two more green diarrhea for the next day. I had never been like this in my life and it's quite scary. By the weekend, everything was cleared and I went to the doctor for a test but the result was inconclusive. I don't want to accuse them but I couldn't think of what would have caused my condition. Hubby did have some stomachache but he wasn't as bad as me. Unfortunately, we just don't think we will go back again. It's such a shame that we didn't have a great experience on our special day.

Finally tried out this place after knowing it for many years. My partner who is a fan of Japanese food enjoyed his bowl of rice with assorted sashimi. For myself I got the soba with tempura. The tempura batter was a little too thick which overpowered the prawn. I thought the soba sauce was missing but turns out it was in the same bowl as the noodles. The melon soda was overpriced, and I recommend getting the hojicha tea. The staff were really friendly. Make a booking if you plan to eat there. Overall it was good, and would come back to try something different.

By far the best Japanese restaurant I've been to in Melbourne. - The closest experience to being in Japan, incredible food - authentic experience. 10/10 - Hamish John Appleby // APPLEBY PHOTOGRAPHY

Shira Nui is a gem in Melbourne’s dining scene. Every visit to this restaurant is a delightful culinary experience. One dish that stands out is the Chawanmushi. The taste is consistently excellent, making it a must-try for anyone dining here.
My favorite dish at Shira Nui is the Chirashi. The freshness of the ingredients and the perfect balance of flavors make it a standout choice. If you’re a fan of Japanese cuisine, Shira Nui should be at the top of your list.

Had lunch at this restaurant. Waiting staff were friendly and allocated a seat with ease, though I suggest calling ahead to make a booking.
Food was decent for what we ordered with okay pricing. Set menu with the main was filling for me and my partner. We saw others having thr omakase which we didn't try this time.
I do recommend giving it a go during lunch to see if you're in the area.

One of the best omakase experience you'll ever have in melbourne. Cosy little restaurant, decent pricing and amazing flavour. Go for dinner instead as lunch seating was quite rush in an hour for the omakase course.
