Kind of abysmal. The train station that houses the great northern explorer and te Huia trains is just a platform with a little cafe and not even any toilets. Expected a bit more.

A pretty basic station on the edge of Auckland City Centre used by the Northern Explorer and Te Huia trains. Finally getting a modest upgrade with wheelchair ramps, toilets and a covered waiting area. But a city with a third of Aotearoa’s population deserves better than this for interregional and long-distance trains.

The Te Huia Train stop at this station too. This is the only way to come to Auckland City from Hamilton if you want to travel by train.

The other way to come to Auckland is catching bus route 21 from Hamilton Transport Hub at 9:15am during weekdays. The bus will take you to Pukekohe train station where you can catch bus 394 to Papakura for AT train services to Auckland city. The trip costs you 10 dollars (by Full Fare Bee Cards) with an approximately 2-hour trip via most towns like The Base, Huntley, Meremere, Hampton Downs, Pukeno, Tuakau and Buckland. It’s a scenic route just like Te Huia is. The return trip departs at 14:20 at Pukekohe Station during weekdays. No service during public holidays. So if you are not a morning person who can make it to catching Te Huia, Route 21 is definitely a good option for you.

One of the perks Te Huia has is that it will take you directly to Auckland city with only 18 dollars maximum you need to pay. It also has on board cafe, wifi, toilets and disabled seating areas for customers with different needs. It also runs on Saturday, on which 21 doesn’t run from Hamilton to Pukekohe, as it does from Monday to Friday.

The Strand station, which is the one this review is for, is a bit far from the city centre and Britomart Station. Also it doesn’t have an on site toilet at the moment, which causes me a bit inconvenience.

Train drops you off, tosses out your luggage and leaves. No wifi in the area. It’s a bit of a walk to anywhere. Cabs are few and far between and we were warned on the train most are trying to rip you off. Make sure you arrange a way out of this parking lot drop off before you leave Wellington.
