I absolutely love this place. It's a hidden gem. In the hustle and bustle of York on a Saturday, and at the start of the Christmas markets, we made our way here and arrived just after the opening time at 10. It was fairly quiet then, and we got to look round without any waiting and could spend time looking at the things we wanted, not feeling like we had to hurry up *(Tickets are valid for a year, too) There are some great artefacts to see and I especially loved the 'Yorkshire's prehistoric people' display and the impressive collection of old botany and fossil books in the library.
The gardens, which you walk through part of, to get to the museum are lovely. On exiting the museum, they are worth having a better look round. The edible garden in the grounds will be even more amazing to visit again in spring. In the grounds, you can look around the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, part of which (a huge fireplace) where the monks could briefly warm themselves, is situated inside the museum itself. Food and drinks are available outside the museum in the grounds. It's a lovely breathing space in the city centre, the air changes with all the plants and greenery. It's worth a visit!

Nice museum, some interesting exhibits, very friendly staff. Understand the need for funding but made the tickets quite expensive for what was there to see.

Stunning gardens / park. The squirrels are tame but grey. Feed them at your own risk.

Nice for a visit a short walk from the centre of York. Great exhibition on at time of visit about a major female archaeologist, really interesting.
The walk thought various rooms was fascinating moving from ore history dinosaur age to Roman times and into industrial age... Brilliant... Well worth the entrance fee.
Was surprised there was no coffee shop inside building however a short 5 minute walk around read is the Yorkshire Art Museum which had an "upmarket" cafe...

This museum has been around since the 1820s and has some wonderful displays.I particularly enjoyed the geology exhibitions-check out the amazing William Smith map and display upstairs and the Jurassic Yorkshire display has awesome fossils. And the Museum is set in beautiful gardens -superb if the sun is shining. What’s not to like?

This is a great museum with a wealth of artifacts covering the Jurassic period through to medieval times. It's well laid out and very good value for money, the staff are very helpful. The only slight criticism is some of the lighting is poor on the fossil displays that you can't read the information, which is a shame.
