Great Lake Scheme - Tasmania's Central Highlands

This drive is beautiful with the lookouts and the lake. It has an incredible history, from the ice age through to the hydro-electricity scheme. It is definitely worth a day out. We absolutely loved it. We visited in winter, and thankfully, on our chosen day, it was sunny, and ice & snow free. Beware, it can snow any time of the year up here. Nice to see, not to drive in.

The lookout at Haulage Hill overlooks Great Lake, which proudly sits 1034 metres above sea level. When full, the lake has the capacity to cover 17610 hectares. It was a natural lake but has been significantly increased in size several times to support the Hydro electricity plants.

NOTE: Road warnIng 'Traffic movements on all roads in the Highland Lakes region may be affected at any time of the year by frost, ice, and snow, particularly between May & October. Snow clearing operations commence each morning, and vehicles are usually able to travel safely from 10 am.

Lots of space to pull over and have a magnificent view over the Great Lake. Info board nearby with a map and fun facts.

Lots of tissues in the nearby bushes…?

Beautiful spot to pull over and see just how massive the Great lake is. Came through here twice and saw it on both scales, once when it was snowing and once Beautiful and sunny. Definitely worth a little detour if you're driving nearby.

A great spot with beautiful drive and out of the world sceneries on the way. But the wind was bitingly cold 🥶 so do pack yourself accordingly.

The best driving through the mist and fog and came across coffee in the clouds a nice surprise on a very good day. While we were drinking warm coffee the view started to appear a special experience.
