It is a nice clean airport with plenty of restaurants and shopping. Easy to get around from the Narita Express Train exit. Clean bathrooms. Two sides - a North and South. Quick electronic checkin for airlines. My wife a little upset however because there were no Snickers or M&M's available in the duty free shop!
Took the earliest flight from narita back to sg at 8am flight. Nothing is open and the departure gantry only starts at 7am. Pathetic airport...
Beautiful airport, very clean and organized. Signage is clear and useful and there are lots of great places to grab food and souvenirs.
WARNING: Don't take early flights!
We had an international flight from Narita at 8:00 am, which doesn't seem all that early. For international flights they recommend arriving three hours early, but the trains don't drive at night, so here are the options we had to get there in time.
Options:
* Taxi: 26.000 yen!
* Trains: Earliest train arrives at 6:15, leaving zero margin for error.
* Arrive in Evening: The airport is designed with minimal seating, so you will have to sleep on the cold hard floor.
* Bus: Supposedly there is a bus from Tokyo Station early, but one cannot get there as the trains are not running.
* Hotel: Go early and stay at the 9 hours capsule hotel. But they almost only have capsules for men.
So... you might as well pay for later tickets, and then avoid sleeping on the floor or paying for an extremely expensive taxi ride. Even in smaller cities with 200-300.000 people in Denmark, we have hourly night busses to the airports.

On top of this all tax free stores were closed, 7eleven didn't open till 8:00 am, no restaurants/cafees/bakers were open, and the security didn't open till 1 hour before the flight, which is also when you are expected to be at your gate - but at least the toilets were clean.

The airport is nice. 4 years ago, for the 1st time, I flew All Nippon Airways flight NH832 Ho Chi Minh to Narita, arriving at 6am and the flight is good. It's a Boeing 767-300ER and it's good. I arrive in Terminal 1 and depart on the same terminal, this time a United airlines flight UA902 to Honolulu, Hawaii, departing at 7pm on a Boeing 777-200ER and the flight is alright. I have a 12 hour layover in Narita, so I decided to exit Tokyo by taking the bus to the city and back to the airport and the drive time is very long, 1 hour.
Never seen anything like this - this airport shuts down at 8pm. You would find literally nothing but one McDonald open at terminal one. All commercial lounges close before 9pm.
While we passengers are not simply entitled to late services, it is not right for an airport to sell gate rights and allow flights scheduled all the way till midnight and yet not even operate a single convenient store in the terminal for basic needs - both before and after security.
How ironic the gate to a hospitable culture is the least hospitable airport I’ve set foot in.

Rainy afternoon, delayed boarding, lucky to have gotten a seat at the boarding area. There were only 2 stores for gates A-H and only 1 store sells konbini stuff/essentials like drinks. The other knly has omiyage. Talk about a crowded waiting time and long lines but all is well.
