These sculptures arguably have the best back story of any piece of public art in downtown Ottawa. Shortly after being displayed in 1998, the Stump Girl sculpture (one of the Nature Girls) was stolen. I remember this being a big scandal in Ottawa, as the British High Commission had put a lot of effort in bringing them here.
Happily, the missing statue was found several months later in Vanier. The local press reported at the time that the person who had the statue was a fall guy who was too smashed to notice it.
All these years later, I still laugh when I pass these pieces, as they remind me of the audacity of those thieves who just took poor little Stump Girl.
