Trail Series, Part 26
The Burnaby Mountain Trail has made me begin to wonder if I am developing a serious dependence on the British Columbia trail system. You see it doesn’t seem to matter how many of them I run, I only seem to long for more.

This location features a series of interconnected trails that are mostly technical in nature. I believe they can best be described as mountain bike trails that you are allowed to run or hike on. There are multiple bike jumps to navigate, numerous bridges to cross, frequent rocks and roots to avoid, and the downhills are fairly steep. Strollers and wheelchairs are not recommended and those with mobility issues would likely prefer to avoid this venue.

Although you’ll be surrounded by a dense blanket of trees, the trail offers occasional glimpses of some of the high rises in the greater Vancouver area.

I found ample available parking on the adjacent Simon Fraser University campus for a nominal fee.

If you’re ready for a technical run (or ride), this place is for you.

And that’s…Henry’s Take.

Medium sized park with off leash dog park. Parking is basically nonexistent due to being in a surrounding high density residential neighbourhood. The entire park is basically on a hill with a small flat green space. Tennis courts are fairly busy during peak times.

Nice little quiet park. Open space and ample parking. Gravel soccer and baseball field at the top of the hill. Good to let the doggo run around when no one else around.

One of my favorite spots to visit!! You can experience something different every time you visit. I recommend visiting the Shabolt center and the village museum too!

Deer Lake Park is incredible! The natural beauty here is mind-blowing. It's so peaceful and serene, a real hidden gem in Vancouver. You've got to see it!
A peace of heaven. Stairs were a good practice of hiking with great views and surroundings
If you're going mountain biking and torn between 2 locations, pick the other location over Burnaby. Lots of the trails are permanently closed, the only fun trail was Lower snake. Will not be returning, one time is enough for me.
Located in Burnaby just east of Vancouver, Deer Lake Park offers a nice, flat, and easy walk that circles the lake and passes by a beach area, a viewing tower, and pier, all offering great scenery. The trails are accessible all year and are popular with residents walking dogs or just out for an afternoon stroll through the park.

There are several areas to start the walk around Deer Lake including at the Shadbolt Centre or just off of Royal Oak Street, however, we will begin from the beach area on the east side of the lake along Sperling Avenue. The beach can be quite busy on warm summer days with children playing on the playground. Go left and walk towards the small park building where the washrooms are located. On the other side of the building, cross the small bridge and follow the trail as it gradually climbs along the lake, away from the beach area.

Go right at the paved road and follow the road as you pass by several houses located along the lake. Eventually, the pavement becomes gravel trail again as you walk towards the water and onto a wooden boardwalk.
Great easy hiking trail with multiple loops. Good weekend hike for families with kids. Gotta pay park up at SFU and walk down.
Beautiful place to watch sunset. Great place for picnic, well-maintained park with beautiful landscapes!
I visited the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area with my family this weekend and we had a wonderful time. The park is very well-maintained and has plenty of parking spaces. We enjoyed the panoramic views of the city and the mountains from the lookout point. We also had a picnic at the Centennial Rose Garden, which was very peaceful and relaxing. The roses were in full bloom and smelled amazing. We then explored some of the forested trails, which were easy to moderate in difficulty and had clear signs and maps. We saw some wildlife, such as deer, squirrels, and birds, along the way. We also admired the eco-sculptures, which are made of plants and depict different animals and characters. They were very creative and impressive. The highlight of our visit was the Playground of the Gods, which is a collection of wooden sculptures that represent the Japanese myth of the creation of the world. They were very majestic and fascinating. We learned a lot about the history and culture of Japan from the information boards. We spent about four hours at the park and we felt very refreshed and rejuvenated. We would definitely recommend this park to anyone who loves nature and art. It is a great place to visit for all ages and interests.
Great view of the city and mountains. A peaceful spot to go for a picnic. Kids friendly and has a play area. Also, there are few trails around to go for a quick hike. Amazing roses and flowers can be seen during the summer.

You can sit on the hillside and overlook the cityscape, or take a leisurely stroll along the trail, which will give you a sense of wide-open vistas and tranquility. Occasionally, there are even weddings held here.

Great nice little park around the corner from Lougheed town center mall. You hear the skytrain but still pretty calm. Has basketball court. Grassy area is nice for a picnic or to play ball or badminton. Children can enjoy spray park and cool off on a hot summer day.

Awesome place for almost everything. Cool and shady by the lake.

Kayak rental store is available at the rate from $ 30 per hour.

A beautiful place for a gathering, chatting, reading, jogging or just to relax.

Washrooms were manageable.

The green playground needs an upgrade. The swings are extremely high that only a teenager or adult can get on them. It was right for my 6 ft tall husband.

Our kids like the upper playground. The wading pool is a delight to have. The washrooms are usually clean

The tennis courts are great; however, please please please make the WALL taller so tennis balls don't fly over to the other side.

Overall, I would rate it 3.5 stars.

This is most versatile park in Burnaby if not greater Vancouver area. The views are beautiful from spring to winter, with cherry blossom trees, roses, maple trees and icy lake tops. The geese and other wildlife such as herons and turtles love to make it their resting place. Not to mention the golden hour sunset photo-op and of course, the trail for hikers. There's a more hidden stairs that lead to a passage into the hills and out of the park, which I would not recommend walking during the rain. The community centre nearby provides a place to get water, a snack or drink, wifi, and washrooms. It also has a working area for people who are studying or having a meeting. Piano and other art lessons are held there as well. And some of the works are up on the walls for visitors to browse through. The lake is good for kayaking and canoes. I recommend visiting during the Canadian autumn season to get the most beautiful sunset and colourful trees.
Overlooking the whole of Vancouver and the Lion‘s Gate Bridge, the park is small, but very comfortable. Sitting quietly on the stone, watching the sunset, I feel relaxed.

Lovely spot for picnic and seeing sunset. The parking can be hard to find as it fills up quick
Burnaby mountain has so many hidden gems. Of course the view from the top that you can get to driving and park there for a great view of the Indian arm, Burnaby, Vancouver, the north shore mountains and more. There’s also a large number of trails to go hiking and biking. I use to go from burtquitlam station to the top of SFU and back for a great 2.5 hour hike. Lots of trails and nature within the city, truly a treasure.

Great park it's gold outdoor exercise things, sand swings and play things, water part could be better and shade would be nice but overall it's decent and next to the library and cameron community center
These photos make me homesick! I grew up directly in front of the reservoir, the 2nd house in from Cambridge. The old house is still there😊. There used to be a line of boulders about 3ft apart on the side of the road and we would spend time jumping along them. Back then it was not a park. When I am on the mainland I sometimes drive past the house. I have a deep longing to go inside my old home. 😨

Quiet, Peaceful & Beautiful park with an easy walking trail around the lake, suitable for all ages. You can bring dogs to the trail on leashed but cannot bring them inside the park

We entered the trail from the boat rental store which locates next to the park and it took less than 1.5 hours to complete the trail back to the parking lots (we walked alongside of the lake)
The trail is partial shaded by trees & some areas are fully exposed with Sunlight (vitamin D moments)

Bonus - we saw many gooses, unfortunately no deer in the Deer Lake. Haha
Beautiful place to go and observe sunrise / sunset of the Downtown Vancouver Skyline from afar. You can see the entire mountain range, North Vancouver, Burnaby, even parts of Richmond from up here. Lots of good vibes all around for photography.

Great small playground that has two different leveled play areas for little ones and bigger kids. Also has spray park right next to it. And very convenient with washroom there. Parking was not easy sometimes with street parking.

This park is one of the beat places in metro vancouver to kayaking, fishing, walking, bird watching and picnicking. The parking lot is okay even for weekends. There is a washroom, boat rental and few swings. The boardwalk guide you for walking around the lake. Watch for geese poop in grassy areas. I highly recommend this lake and park to have fun with family if you love outdoor activities.
Enjoy a serene atmosphere with a breathtaking city view. This hidden gem offers tranquility and spaciousness. Don't miss the delightful gardens it has to offer in a quick stop.

Water park, playground with equipment for toddler, preschool and elementary, swings, shaded benches, lots of trees, public toilets.
This seems to be a popular area for visitors and local residents. The wooden sculpture created by the Japanese sculptors is very interesting. Make sure you read the information on the plaques.
Absolutely fantastic! I enjoyed my short walk here and enjoy the scenery. So wide and if you love walking then this park is good for you. I will try to visit on a weekdays so I could explore a lot of activities especially indoor.

Best sunset view in Vancouver
Took the dogs for a great little hike. They were so busy sniffing around and playing in the grass. The trails are great with lots of downhill and uphill spots to work your legs. Cute little sitting spots to have a snack and some beverages while watching others.
Nestled in the heart of British Columbia, the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area is a picturesque retreat from the urban landscape. Spanning over 576 acres, this sanctuary boasts lush forests, meandering trails, and breathtaking views. Visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature, encountering a diverse range of flora and fauna along the way. With its cultural significance as the site of Simon Fraser University, the conservation area seamlessly blends academia and natural beauty. Whether seeking a peaceful hike, a family picnic, or a glimpse of wildlife, Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area offers a rejuvenating escape where the wonders of nature unfold at every turn.
Lovely spot to enjoy the sunset.
This is a beautiful park with lots to do, I love walking my dog around here while I wait for my partner to arrive at the sky train station. There is a dog park, tennis/pickle ball courts. A water playground for kids with picnic tables. It’s very clean and a great space to enjoy!
The views are truly spectacular from here. It is the place closest to Vancouver city centre, and with the easiest access, I've been to where you get those quintessential Canadian views of the snow capped mountains, tree covered slopes and sea inlets.

The walks are on very good paths and all easily accessible from the car park.

You might only stay half an hour - but it will be a memorable one!

Ok, this is a hidden gem and one of my favorite spots in the tri cities! The view of the North Shore and Vancouver is breathtaking! You get an excellent helicopter view.

It's great to visit in the spring and summer. This is a great spot to take a date or hang with someone you care about.

People are friendly and respectful of the space. Good spots to lounge, just whatever you bring with you, please take out.🙏

I love this park because it's small, simple, clean and i live next door to it.

I can't recommend it as a destination for activities but if you're close by and need some trees, a nice paved walkway and a small splash park this place is for you.

There are public washrooms in the community centre.

The beauty of the snow on the lights is lovely. Kushiro Park is a beautiful and attractive beauty in the evening during the snow season in December. On top of that, they made it very beautiful.
It's a fun area. Some really lovely trails. I bring my dog & we had a blast yesterday running down snowy hills & through snow drifts. Families were up there with their kids. Was a nice wintery day.
"Cramp ons": If there is snow or ice buy a pair. Basically snow chains for your shoes.

We were able to run down a fairly steep decline.....no problem. A MUST for winter hikes.

I do the Grouse Grind a lot, there is a 1+ km section called "Trans Canada Trail". Nice winter Grind training. Hamstrings were pumped! Did a couple up & downs. Great!

Glad I tried the area. Can't wait for spring to really run through there.

Super awesome, spacious park with numerous playgrounds for various ages. There’s 2 port-a-potties around the corner form the splash park.

-1star: C’mon, with such an epic park made for all ages, a proper washroom for changing & freshening up is necessary. Especially when that water is SO cold. It’s bound for kids to need a toilet. And when it’s so hot, we’re all hydrating!💦
Great trails for mountain biking & hiking! Easy access from Simon Fraser University campus, the trails are well marked with signs and more importantly the trails are very well maintained. There is some construction when you come out halfway on the single track ( upper Mel’s ) but they usually have a flag person directing traffic. Overall great trail system !
Super cool spot to relax and watch a good set. Great views of the city of Vancouver, the inlet and north shore mountains. It can get a bit busy on a nice day so it might be worth parking a few blocks away and walking to avoid the traffic when leaving!

Cameron park is beautiful. When I grew up, this was just grass. I'm so glad the city of Burnaby decided to make a park.

I'm more excited for the new complex coming in 2026. I've been waiting 17 years for it.

The park consists of a picnic area with a waterpark, a gym/place for seniors, and some trails for joggers or bikers.

It's really beautiful especially in the summer. Whats convenient is that the library and gym is right beside it, so you can use the washroom and enjoy the contents.
It is small, but the sight view is amazing.
I wish the city can cut the trees infront of the park that disturb the view

Peaceful forested gravel path along the river, though you can very clearly hear noise from the industry along the river. Views are obstructed by trees. Path is about 2m wide so decent for social distancing. Some slope to the trail, with a few areas being quite steep.

Hiking downhill from Stratford Park across Scenic Park is only about 15-20 minutes. About double that for the reverse, going uphill.

I would advise you start from the western side (Penzance Dr), which is the lower side of the trail, and work your way up the hill so you can return downhill.

Street parking without restriction is available on Penzance, just past the trailhead.

Might not be the best idea to get there via train tracks, may cause unnecessary attention. But very peaceful walk at night, a real place of serenity
Nice ride.
It is possible to ride up to the campus from Forest Grove Park avoiding Gaglardi Way. There are trails through the Park that connects with the TransMountain trail. Follow the trail up under the powerlines near the Kwekwecnewtxw (Coast Salish Watch House). It is a little overgrown at the creek crossing but otherwise ok. At Gaglardi (there is NO crosswalk) connect with the service road then Water Main trail (steep) on the other side.
